All injuries for 3 years were recorded by race medical doctors and nurses. Injuries were grouped into main anatomical area of injury, and a Poisson regression model was used to determine the risk factors associated with injuries.

The four injury risk factors associated with all injuries during an endurance cycling event were sex (women vs men, p<0.0001), older age (p=0.0005), faster cycling speed (p<0.0001) and higher average individualised Wind Speed (aiWindSpeed, p<0.0001). The only risk factor for serious/life-threatening injuries was women (p=0.0413). For specific main anatomical areas head/neck (women), upper limb (women, older age, faster cyclists), trunk (women, higher aiWindSpeed), and lower limb (higher aiWindSpeed).

Women, older age, faster cycling speed and higher aiWindSpeed were all risk factors for acute injuries during a mass community-based endurance cycling event. These risk factors should help inform race organisers and medical teams on race day to ensure the best medical care is given, and effective acute injury prevention programmes are disseminated.

To elucidate the link between these variants and FLD we characterized Mboat7 liver-specific knock-out mice (Mboat7-LSKO). Chow-fed Mboat7-LSKO mice developed fatty livers and associated liver injury. Lipidomic analysis of liver using mass spectrometry revealed a pronounced reduction in 20-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid content in phosphatidylinositols (PIs), but not in other phospholipids. The change in fatty acid composition of PIs in these mice was associated with a marked increase in de novo lipogenesis due to activation of SREBP-1c, a transcription factor that coordinates the activation of genes encoding enzymes in the fatty acid biosynthesis pathway. We measured glucose, advanced glycation end products, glycated albumin, circulating glycated hemoglobin, and soluble receptor for advanced glycation end product (sRAGE) levels on admission, at 24 hours, and at 72 hours in 40 patients with acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. We compared these values with healthy control subjects. The mean age was 63.3±11.2 years. Fifty percent of the patients were women. Thirteen patients (32.5%) died during this hospitalization. The mean maximum glucose level on the day of admission was 215.7±171.1 mg/dL. Compared with control subjects, there was a significant reduction in advanced glycation end product levels (p=0.0001) in the patients at all 3 time points. Circulating glycated hemoglobin levels were significantly higher in patients compared with control subjects. We also observed a moderate increase in glycated albumin levels on admission and at 24 hours when compared with the control samples. Overall sRAGE levels were similar to controls, but patients with dense infiltrates on chest X-ray had increased levels compared with patients who did not have these dense infiltrates on the day of admission. The purpose of this reflection is to discuss seven content areas that might be addressed by faculty in order to promote scholarship, particularly among junior faculty. These include 1) knowing your academic track and its associated expectations by rank, as well as the scholarship expectations within your department; 2) considering your personal goals, interests, professional development needs and the relationship between meaningful work and burnout; 3) starting small and building towards a niche content area; 4) finding collaborators and the benefits of collaboration; 5) seeking alignment between your scholarship and work that you already are performing; 6) educating yourself about available outlets for scholarship and 7) seeking mentorship.

Thyroid cancer is the only tumor in which age is an important prognostic factor. In papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTC), 45 years of age seems to be a key point that divides adult patients into two groups, with different clinical features. The aim of the study was to perform a microarray-based analysis in two groups of patients (<45 and ≥45 years old), in order to verify the occurrence of specific copy number alterations (CNAs) that could be associated to different patient behaviors associated with age.

In order to search and compare genomic alterations that may be related to age, we evaluated the occurrence of CNAs in the genome of 24 PTC samples, divided in two groups (<45 and ≥45 years old).

We identified only one region showing a statistically significant difference between the groups (p=0.00357) a deletion of approximately 537 kps in 1p35.3., which was more frequent in patients aged 45 years or older. This is the region where, among others, the gene SESN2 is located, which is activated under oxidative stress and plays an antioxidant role, in addition to protecting the genetic material from damage generated by reactive oxygen species (ROS).
