7% vs 2.9%), and to be ex-smokers, compared to controls. Moreover, male gout patients reported lower levels of physical activity, while diabetes and hypertension were more common in both genders with gout than in controls.

In this questionnaire study, gout patients reported significantly more obesity and binge-drinking behaviour and less physical activity than controls. This suggests that there are great unmet needs for the management of lifestyle factors, particularly regarding overweight/obesity and binge drinking, in patients with gout.

We examined whether, among 172 psychologists, factors predicting suicide risk among the general population (e.g., gender and mental illness), occupational factors (e.g., burnout and secondary traumatic stress), and past trauma predicted suicidality. We also tested whether resilience and meaning in life were negatively related to suicidality and whether resilience buffered relationships between risk factors and suicidality. Family history of mental illness, number of traumas, and lifetime depression/anxiety predicted higher suicidality, whereas resilience predicted lower suicidality. At higher levels of resilience, the relationship between family history of suicide and suicidality was stronger. The CelLock™ procedure kit is used to collect and prepare cellular specimens such as fine needle aspirates (FNA), cytology specimens, cultured cells, small tissue biopsies, and samples with scant tissue fragments or cells into a paraffin cell-block. This cell-block can be used for subsequent microtomy and staining using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), special stains, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and applicable molecular techniques such as in situ hybridization (ISH). CelLock is a standardized method that provides optimal receipt, preservation, preparation, and processing of cell-blocks which, contain virtually all of the submitted specimens and are able to be embedded and sectioned in a reproducible fashion. The specimen contained within the cell-block is preserved such that all the cellular protein and genetic information is available for histological and ancillary testing.Animal narratives have not been a major part of the coronavirus pandemic other than to frame animals as "epidemic villains" whose relations with humans are either zoonotic or pathological. In this context, this article considers stories of compassion from Kerala, where activists and ordinary people started feeding stray dogs and other street animals during the state instituted lockdowns. State sanction and media coverage of feeding these hungry animals allowed them to be instated as part of a multispecies community in the pandemic, allowing them for the first time, legitimized access to food and water. Compassion was prescribed and validated on the basis of perceiving suffering synergistically or as mutually experienced during the pandemic. However, a linear history of compassion cannot be constructed as Kerala has an antagonistic relationship with street dogs framing them as violent free-ranging dogs that carry diseases and attack people. This article draws on insights gleaned from multispecies ethnography to explore the hidden everyday lives of the animals during the pandemic. It raises questions about how people come to occupy relations of care in societies where animal suffering is not acknowledged and explores the possibilities opened by the way compassion was constructed as a practical and moral value during the pandemic.Self-administered HIV testing may be a promising strategy to improve testing in hard-to-reach young adults, provided they are aware of and willing to use oral HIV self-testing (HIVST). This study examined awareness of and willingness to use oral HIVST among 350 high-risk young adults, aged 18-22, living in Kenya's informal urban settlements. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used to examine differences in HIVST awareness and willingness by demographic and sexual risk factors. Findings showed that most participants were male (56%) and less than 20 years old (60%). Awareness of oral HIVST was low (19%). However, most participants (75%) were willing to use an oral HIV self-test in the future and ask their sex partner(s) to self-test before having sex (77%). Women (OR = 1.80, 95%CI1.11, 2.92), older participants (aged 20+) (OR = 2.57, 95% CI1.48, 4.46), and more educated participants (OR = 2.25, 95%CI1.36, 3.70) were more willing to use HIVST as compared to men, teen-aged, and less educated participants, respectively. Young adults who reported recent engagement in high-risk sexual behaviors, such as unprotected sex, sex while high or drunk, or sex exchange, were significantly less likely to be willing to use an oral HIV self-test kit (OR = 0.34, 95%CI0.13,0.86). Those with the highest monthly income (OR = 0.47, 95%CI 0.25, 0.89) were also less willing to use HIVST. More community- and peer-based efforts are needed to highlight the range of benefits of HIVST (i.e., social, clinical, and structural) to appeal to various youth demographics, in addition to addressing concerns relating to HIVST.Tea is consumed widely around the world owing to its refreshing taste and potential health benefits. However, drinking tea is considered a major route for dietary aluminum exposure in areas where tea consumption is relatively large. To assess the health risk associated with drinking tea, the contamination level of aluminum was determined in 81 tea samples. The transfer rate of aluminum during tea brewing was investigated. Then based on the site-specific exposure parameters such as consumption data and body weight for six different subpopulations in Fujian, the exposure risks were estimated using a probabilistic approach. Results demonstrate that the contents of aluminum in green tea, white tea, oolong tea, and black tea were significantly different according to the one-way ANOVA analysis (p  less then  0.05). The transfer rate of aluminum were 32.6%, 31.6%, 26.3%, and 14% for white tea, black tea, oolong tea, and green tea, respectively. With respect to the oral reference dose, the exposure of inhabitants in Fujian to aluminum through drinking tea is under control (even at the 99th percentile). This study aimed to illustrate the use of D-optimal mixture design (DOMD) for optimization of an enhancer containing Dapsone niosomal formula for acne topical treatment. Mixture components (MixCs) studied were Span 20, Cholesterol, and Cremophor RH. Different responses were measured. Optimized formula (OF) was selected to minimize particle size and maximize absolute zeta potential and entrapment efficiency. Optimized formula gel (OF-gel) was prepared and characterized. OF-gel in vivo skin penetration using confocal laser scanning microscopy and activity against Cutibacterium acnes in acne mouse model were studied. Based on DOMD results analysis, adequate models were derived. Piepel and contour plots were plotted accordingly to explain how alteration in MixCs L-pseudo values affected studied responses and regions for different responses' values. The OF had suitable predicted responses which were in good correlation with the actually measured ones. The OF-gel showed suitable characterization and in vivo skin penetration up to the dermis layer. In vivo acne mouse-model showed that OF-gel-treated group (OF-gel-T-gp) had significantly better recovery (healing) criteria than untreated (UT-gp) and Aknemycin®-treated (A-T-gp) groups. This was evident in significantly higher reduction of inflammation percent observed in OF-gel-T-gp than both UT-gp and A-T-gp. Better healing in OF-gel-T-gp compared with other groups was also verified by histopathological examination. Moreover, OF-gel-T-gp and A-T-gp bacterial loads were non-significantly different from each other but significantly lower than UT-gp. Thus, DOMD was an adequate statistical tool for optimization of an appropriate enhancer containing Dapsone niosomal formula that proved to be promising for topical treatment of acne.

The cardiovascular effects of nicotinic receptors of cholinergic system in the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (PPT) were shown.

In the following, the cardiovascular effects of the muscarinic receptor, another receptor in this system, were examined.

Rats were divided into eight groups 1) control; 2 and 3) Ach (acetylcholine, an agonist) 90 and 150nmol; 4 and 5) Atr (atropine; a muscarinic antagonist) 3 and 9nmol; 6) Atr 3 +Ach 150; 7) Atr 9 +Ach 150; and 8) Atr 3 +hexamethonium (Hexa; 300nmol) + Ach 150. After anesthesia, cannulation of the femoral artery was performed, and then the mean arterial pressure (MAP), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and heart rate (HR) were recorded using a power lab apparatus.

Following drug microinjection, the maximum change (Δ) in MAP, SBP, and HR was calculated and analyzed. Both doses of Ach (90 and 150) significantly decreased ΔMAP and ΔSBP but could not change ΔHR. Neither of the doses of Atr significantly affected ΔMAP, ΔSBP, and ΔHR. Co-injection of Atr 3 +Ach 150 only increased ΔHR, but Atr 9 +Ach 150 decreased ΔMAP and ΔSBP than Ach 150 alone. The effect of the co-injection of Atr 9 +Hexa 300 +Ach 150 was also the same as the Atr 9 +Ach 150 group.

The present results revealed that cholinergic muscarinic receptors in the PPT have an inhibitory effect on MAP and SBP with no important effect on HR.

In the current study, the hematotoxicity of EMB was evaluated in Molt-4 T-cells, a human T-lymphoblastic cell line with high motility, and the role of vitamin E (VitE) and dithiothreitol (DTT) in attenuating EMB cytotoxicity was characterized. Exposure of Molt-4 cells to EMB decreased cell viability and proliferation, induced a loss of cell clusters, and significantly increased membrane collapse and chromatin condensation. Moreover, EMB significantly increased cell death and suppressed transglutaminase activity. EMB treatment modulated the NF-κB signaling pathway, decreased the expression of p105, p50, and p65/RelA in cytosolic and nuclear fractions, and increased nuclear IκBα expression. EMB increased oxidative stress, as demonstrated by a significant increase in the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Treatment with non-cytotoxic concentrations of VitE or DTT ameliorated the hematotoxicity induced by pretreatment with EMB, increased Molt-4 cell viability, raised the IC50 values of EMB, limited intracellular ROS generation, and mitigated EMB-mediated effects on NF-κB signaling. The results indicate the potential cytotoxicity of EMB on human lymphocytes, and demonstrate that VitE and DTT treatment can reduce the cytotoxic effects of EMB.
