Alterations in dynamic functional brain networks have been widely reported in MDD. However, previous studies mainly focused on detecting non-overlapping sub-networks/communities, neglecting the possibility that one brain region may belong to multiple sub-networks/communities. In the present work, we utilized tensor decomposition method to detect overlapping communities and study the dynamism of overlapping sub-networks through 58 patients with MDD and 63 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC). The strength vectors of communities were calculated and two-sample t-test was performed to investigate the statistical significance of the differences in dynamism of MDD and HC groups. We found that communities detected in two groups were pairwise region-matching but overlapped brain regions were almost totally different. We considered two region-matching communities in the two groups as a sub-network. Compared to HCs, MDD patients showed significantly decreased dynamism in five sub-networks which could be functionally mapped to Visual Network (VN), Default Mode Network (DMN), Cognitive Control Network (CCN), Bilateral Limbic Network (BLN) and Auditory Network (AN). The results showed that MDD might only have a marginal effect on the holistic detection of communities and the changes of overlapped brain regions in MDD patients might be put down to the alteration of hubs. Further statistical analysis on nine sub-networks showed decreased dynamism of five sub-networks in MDD patients, which might help us achieve a better understanding of mechanism in MDD.

To determine the clinical phenotype of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) after Zika virus (ZIKV) infection, the anti-glycolipid antibody signature, and the role of other circulating arthropod-borne viruses, we describe a cohort of GBS patients identified during ZIKV and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) outbreaks in Northeast Brazil.

We prospectively recruited GBS patients from a regional neurology center in Northeast Brazil between December 2014 and February 2017. Serum and CSF were tested for ZIKV, CHIKV, and dengue virus (DENV), by RT-PCR and antibodies, and serum was tested for GBS-associated antibodies to glycolipids.

Here, we demonstrate that spatially resolving quantitative alpha particle autoradiography combined with backscatter electron imaging and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) can establish the correlation between alpha-emitting RNs (notably 226Ra and 210Po, daughters of the abundant 238U decay series) and certain minerals, in different stages of processing. This is achieved by locating the RNs to a specific mineral grain, the species of which can subsequently be identified using EDS. The mineralogy of RN-associated grains can then be compared with the mineral suite and relative abundances of the species within the sample, by relating how often each mineral is associated with alpha decay-events. For HS detectable also in the biological and oxidative treatment stages, a change in HS distribution towards to lower mass range was often observed.There is an increasing demand to monitor the human exposure to phthalates, and a few studies have used phthalate metabolites in wastewater to estimate exposure to these chemicals in the population. However, it is suspected that the stability of phthalates and phthalate metabolites during sewer transport can influence the final estimates. In this study, we used laboratory sewer reactors to evaluate the in-sewer transformation of phthalates and their metabolites, and deconjugation of phthalate metabolites. We found concentrations of parent phthalates decreased quickly over time while the concentrations of phthalate metabolites increased significantly for most compounds, indicating that parent phthalate compounds are partly transformed into their metabolites in the sewer. Our assessment of the deconjugation of glucuronide-conjugated phthalate metabolites found that this process did not significantly affect the concentrations of phthalate metabolites in the wastewater, with the relative difference ranging from -16% to 7% between enzymatically treated samples and control group. Additionally, our results showed that phthalate metabolites could be subject to rapid degradation during the incubation process. Our findings suggested that the level of phthalate metabolites in sewage could be strongly influenced by the in-sewer transformation of the parent phthalates and of themselves, and could not be assumed as uniquely the results of urinary excretion after human exposure to parent phthalates.

The present study investigated whether grit can mitigate the associations between school burnout, loneliness, and depressive symptoms among adolescents. It also examined gender differences.

This study included 1296 seventh and 1166 eighth graders from Finland. The study variables were self-reported and regression analysis was performed.

This study found that two grit facets - consistency of interest and perseverance of effort - played resilient roles in school burnout. A high level of grit substantially reduced reported depressive symptoms when adolescents experienced high school burnout. Our further analysis showed that the role of grit was more pronounced among boys than among girls. When male adolescents were at risk of school burnout, both consistency of interest and perseverance of effort protected them and they had only low levels of loneliness and depressive symptoms.

This study demonstrates that grit can act as a resilience factor among adolescents.Breast cancer therapy with classical chemotherapy is unable to eradicate breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs). Loss of p53 function causes growth and differentiation in cancer stem cells (CSCs); therefore, p53-targeted compounds can be developed for BCSCs-targeted drugs. Previously, hesperidin (HES), a citrus flavonoid, showed anticancer activities and increased efficacy of chemotherapy in several types of cancer in vitro and in vivo. This study was aimed to explore the key protein and molecular mechanism of hesperidin in the inhibition of BCSCs using bioinformatics and in vitro study. Bioinformatics analysis revealed about 75 potential therapeutic target proteins of HES in BCSCs (TH), in which TP53 was the only direct target protein (DTP) with a high degree score. Furthermore, the results of GO enrichment analysis showed that TH was taken part in the biological process of regulation of apoptosis and cell cycle. The KEGG pathway enrichment analysis also showed that TH is involved in several pathways, including cell cycle, p53 signaling pathway. In vitro experiment results showed that HES inhibited cell proliferation, mammosphere, and a colony formation, and migration in on MCF-7 3D cells (mammospheres). HES induced G0/G1 cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in MCF-7 cells 3D. In addition, HES treatment reduced the mRNA level of p21 but increased the mRNA level of cyclin D1 and p53 in the mammosphere. HES inhibits BCSCs in mammospheres. More importantly, this study highlighted p53 as a key protein in inhibition of BCSCs by HES. Future studies on the molecular mechanism are needed to validate the results of this study.
