In this study, 117 patients evaluated for liver transplantation in a single center between May 2010 and April 2016 with normal left ventricular ejection fraction were included according to clinical characteristics of their liver disease (1) compensated (n = 29), (2) clinically significant portal hypertension (n = 49), and (3) decompensated (n = 39). Standard echocardiography and speckle tracking echocardiography were performed at rest and during dobutamine stress. Follow-up amounted to three years to evaluate survival and major cardiac events. Altogether 67% (78/117) of the patients were transplanted and 32% (31/96 patients) died during the three-year follow-up period. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) at rest was significantly increased (became more negative) with the severity of liver disease (p -18%) could predict patient survival in a multivariate Cox regression analysis (p = 0.002). A qualitative study was conducted to explore parental experiences and perspectives in relation to lifestyle-related child-rearing practices in order to minimize risk factors at an early stage. Data were collected through interviews (n = 25) and focus groups (n = 4) with parents of children aged 0-2 years, in a disadvantaged neighborhood in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Results showed that parents were often uncertain about a number of lifestyle-related practices. Ambiguity also appeared regarding the parents' intentions to engage in certain practices and what they were able to achieve in everyday life. In addition, parents experienced strong sociocultural influences from their family, which interfered with their ability to make their own decisions on lifestyle-related practices. Parents also expressed a need for peer-support and confirmation of their practices. Future studies should focus on supporting parents in their parental practices during the first two years of their child's life. Any such study should take into account the specific sociocultural context accompanying lifestyle-related parental practices.A total of 44 samples of beef, pork, and poultry preparations were tested. Average counts (log cfu/g) of enterobacteria were 1.99 ± 0.99 (beef preparations), 1.96 ± 1.44 (pork), 2.09 ± 0.92 (chicken), and 2.17 ± 1.06 (turkey) (p > 0.05). Two hundred enterobacterial strains were identified and 13 genera (21 species) were distinguished, including species that are a significant cause of infection. The most common genera were Escherichia (32.5% of strains), Serratia (17.0%), Hafnia (12.5%), and Salmonella (12.0%). Isolates were screened by disc diffusion for susceptibility to 15 antibiotics. A total of 126 strains (63% of the isolates) were multirresistant (having resistance to two or more antibiotics), 46 (23%) were resistant to one antibiotic, and 28 (14%) were sensitive to all antibiotics. The average number of resistances per strain was 2.53 ± 2.05. A higher (p less then 0.05) average number of resistances was observed in strains from turkey (3.14 ± 2.55) than in strains from beef (2.15 ± 1.22), pork (2.16 ± 1.39), or chicken (2.44 ± 2.22). This investigation provides evidence that bacteria from red meat and poultry preparations pose major potential risk to consumers.A multilevel and multianalytical approach, combining both traditional and unconventional analytical tools, was used to characterize two physically modified (heated and heated-extruded) corn flours to be used as a "clean label" food ingredient. Physical treatments decreased the resistant starch content and increased the water holding capacity and water binding capacity, more extensively in the product subjected to heating-extrusion, as compared to an untreated control. Heated-extruded flour had the highest ability to form homogeneous systems in cold water while all modified flours produced homogeneous systems when mixed with hot water. Systems made with heated-extruded flour were "more rigid" than other samples at all levels of investigation as they were harder (macroscopic) and had higher storage modulus (mesoscopic), as well as lower proton 1H mobility (molecular). Overall, the results highlighted the ability of the multiscale method to give a thorough overview of the flour-water interactions and showed highest water affinity of heated-extruded flour. Heated-extruded flour was then tested in three real-food industrial applications (carrot soup, tomato sauce and a meat patty), where it was successfully implemented as a clean label thickening agent.
The effects of different types of fatty acids on the gene expression of key players in the IRS1/PI3K signaling pathway have been poorly studied.
We analyzed IRS1, p85α, and p110β mRNA expression and the fatty acid composition of phospholipids in visceral adipose tissue from patients with morbid obesity and from non-obese patients. Moreover, we analyzed the expression of those genes in visceral adipocytes incubated with oleic, linoleic, palmitic and dosahexaenoic acids.
We found a reduced IRS1 expression in patients with morbid obesity, independent of insulin resistance, and a reduced p110β expression in those with lower insulin resistance. A positive correlation was found between p85α and stearic acid, and between IRS1 and p110β with palmitic and dosahexaenoic acid. In contrast, a negative correlation was found between p85α and oleic acid, and between IRS1 and p110β with linoleic, arachidonic and adrenic acid. Incubation with palmitic acid decreased IRS1 expression. p85α was down-regulated after incubation with oleic and dosahexaenoic acid and up-regulated with palmitic acid.
