We provide an extensive review of the pigeon visual system, focussing on the known cell types, receptive field characteristics, mechanisms of perception/visual attention, and projection profiles of neurons in the thalamofugal and tectofugal pathways. The similarities and differences with the primate visual system at each stage of the visual hierarchy are highlighted. We conclude with a discussion of object and face processing in birds, as well as the current state of knowledge in the search for face-selective neurons in the avian visual system. OBJECTIVE HIV-infection increases the risk to progress to active-tuberculosis (TB). Detection of latent TB infection (LTBI) is needed to eventually propose preventive-therapy and reduce TB reservoir. QuantiFERON-TB Plus (QFT-Plus)-test identifies LTBI. Currently, only two studies on QFT-Plus accuracy in HIV-infected-population are available in high TB-endemic-countries. Therefore we aimed to evaluate the effect of HIV-infection on QFT-Plus accuracy to detect LTBI in a low TB-endemic-country. METHODS We enrolled 465 participants, among the 167 HIV-infected-persons 32 with active-TB (HIV-TB), 45 remote-LTBI (HIV-LTBI) and 90 at low M. tuberculosis (Mtb)-infection risk. Among the 298 HIV-uninfected-persons 170 with active-TB, 76 recent-LTBI, 34 remote-LTBI and 18 with low Mtb-infection risk. RESULTS QFT-Plus sensitivity was similar in TB regardless of HIV-status. CD4-count did not influence the distribution of IFN-γ values in HIV-TB and HIV-LTBI. Moreover HIV-LTBI and HIV-uninfected remote LTBI had a similar proportion of results in the uncertain range (IFNγ ≥0.2 ≤ 0.7 IU/ml) differently from those LTBI-persons reporting recent-exposure (p = 0.016). Cytometry results demonstrated that CD8-response was similar in HIV-infected- and -uninfected-persons whereas CD4-response was impaired in HIV-infected-persons (p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS HIV-infection does not affect QFT-Plus response in active-TB, whereas the time of exposure influences the proportion of uncertain-results in LTBI. OBJECTIVES Postnatal outcome in fetuses with congenital cytomegalovirus infection (cCMV) varies from asymptomatic infection to severe neurodevelopmental impairment. Αntenatal biomarkers of long-term clinical outcome, have yet to be established. Α systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to examine whether prenatal cerebral ultrasonography (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in cCMV fetuses may predict clinical outcome. METHODS PubMed and the Web of Science were systematically searched to identify studies reporting on any prenatal US and/or MRI imaging of fetuses with cCMV as well as their postnatal clinical outcome. All reported associations between imaging and postnatal clinical outcome were systematically extracted. Where appropriate, the reported associations were quantitatively synthesized within Bayesian random-effects meta-analyses. RESULTS A total of 1336 studies were screened to identify 26 eligible observational studies. Overall, 4181 fetuses were studied, of which 1518 had bece of funding. OBJECTIVES Polyomavirus (PyV) infections have been associated with different diseases. BK (BKPyV), JC (JCPyV) and simian virus 40 (SV40) are the three main PyVs whose primary infection occurs early in life. Their vertical transmission was investigated in this study. METHODS PyV sequences were analyzed by the digital droplet PCR in blood, serum, placenta, amniotic fluid, vaginal smear from two independent cohorts of pregnant females and umbilical cord blood (UCB) samples. IgG antibodies against the three PyVs were investigated by indirect E.L.I.S.As with viral mimotopes. RESULTS DNAs from blood, vaginal smear and placenta tested BKPyV-, JCPyV- and SV40-positive with a distinct prevalence, while amniotic fluids were all PyVs-negative. A prevalence of 3%, 7%, and 3% for BKPyV, JCPyV and SV40 DNA sequences, respectively, was obtained in UCBs. Serum IgG antibodies from pregnant females reached an overall prevalence of 62%, 42% and 17% for BKPyV, JCPyV and SV40, respectively. Sera from newborns (UCB) tested IgG-positive with a prevalence of 10% for BKPyV/JCPyV and 3% for SV40. CONCLUSIONS In this investigation, PyV vertical transmission was revealed by detecting PyV DNA sequences and IgG antibodies in samples from females and their offspring suggesting a potential risk of diseases in newborns. 3,4-Dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (3-HPAA) are intestinal metabolites of the dietary flavonoid quercetin. DOPAC reportedly showed anxiolytic activity after i.p. administration in rats. The fate of these metabolites after consumption, and the pharmacological properties of 3-HPAA in the body are largely unknown. The aim of the current study was to characterize pharmacokinetic properties of DOPAC and 3-HPAA after intravenous bolus application in rats. UHPLC-MS/MS methods for quantification of DOPAC and 3-HPAA levels in lithium heparin Sprague Dawley rat plasma were developed and validated according to international regulatory guidelines. Non-compartmental and compartmental analyses were performed. Pharmacokinetic profiles of DOPAC and 3-HPAA followed a two-compartment body model, with a fast distribution into peripheral tissues (half-lives of 3.27-5.26 min) and rapid elimination from the body (half-lives of 18.4-33.3 min). Bortezomib (BTZ) is a proteasome inhibitor as approved by US FDA for the treatment of multiple myeloma. It exhibits significant anti-cancer properties, against solid tumors; but lacks aqueous solubility, chemical stability which hinders its successful formulation development. The present study is an attempt to deliver BTZ using N-(2-hydroxypropyl) methacrylamide (HPMA) based copolymeric conjugates and biotinylated PNPs in an effective manner. Study describes a systematic synthetic pathway to synthesize functional polymeric conjugates such as HPMA-Biotin (HP-BT) HPMA-Polylactic acid (HPLA) and HPMA-PLA-Biotin (HPLA-BT) followed by exhaustive characterization both spectroscopically and microscopically. Our strategy yielded polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) of narrow size range of 199.7 ± 1.32 nm. Release studies were performed at pH 7.4 and 5.6. PNPs were 2-folds less hemolytic (p  less then  0.0001) than pure drug. BTZ loaded PNPs of HPLA-BT demonstrated significant anti-cancer activity against MCF-7 cells. IC50 value of these PNPs was 56.06 ± 0.12 nM, which was approximately two folds less than BTZ (p  less then  0.0001). Cellular uptake study confirmed that higher uptake of formulations might be an outcome of biotin surface tethering characteristics that enhanced selectivity and targeting of formulations efficiently. In vivo pharmacokinetics evidenced increased bioavailability (AUC0 t-∞) of DL-HPLA-BT PNPs (drug loaded) than BTZ with an improved half-life. Overall the developed PNPs led to the improved and effective BTZ delivery. The motivation of this study is to demonstrate the practicality of producing slow release and fast release products in a single-step hot melt extrusion (HME) process. HPMCAS as the carrier material showed good potential in monolithic controlled release formulations for the model drug, carbamazepine (CBZ). As binary formulations, CBZ-HPMCAS extrudates showed zero-order release over 24 h which was accompanied by the swelling of the extrudates. A range of functional excipients was used at low quantities to modulate the release rate. The release rates of the HME extrudates could be either accelerated by the incorporations of low quantities (5% w/w) of soluble additives or further sustained by adding lipid excipient, Gelucire 50/13. Clear phase separations of the soluble additives including crosscarmellose sodium, sodium starch glycolate, maltodextrin and lactose in the extrudates led to higher interior porosity and quicker erosion in comparison to the binary extrudates. The phase separated Gelucire in the extrudates led to the substantial swelling of the extrudates and resulted in further prolonged drug release. This study provided clear formulation strategies for modulating the drug release rate from controlled release formulation prepared directly by single-step HME. In addition, this research work also evaluates for the first time HME extrudates simultaneous swelling and drug release using this UV imaging technique. The whole dose cell of this instrumentation is utilised to provide insights into the dissolution process of solid dispersions prepared by HME. Vitamin D deficiency might cause a wide variety of human disorders. As a prerequisite for appropriate diagnosis and therapy, medicinally relevant vitamin D metabolites have to be assayed most accurately and with high specificity. It has been demonstrated, that vitamin D conjugates, linked via a hydroxyl group at C11, might be promising for the development of highly specific antibodies to be employed in competitive protein binding assays. The connective synthesis of 3-TBDMS-11α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 and D2 ethers in 500 mg scale, starting from vitamin D2, is described. For installation of a hydroxyl group at C11 a sequence of Pd(OAc)2 mediated oxidation of an enone, epoxidation and subsequent epoxide ring opening was applied to obtain a suitable CD-ring precursor, that was connected with an A-ring diphenylphosphine oxide by Wittig-Horner reaction. Finally, an appropriate side chain was installed, respectively. In a recently published article, Zamariola et al. (2018) listed four problems of interoceptive accuracy (IAcc) scores as measured with Schandry's heartbeat counting task. In this comment, we clarify that IAcc scores are ratio variables, the analyses of which can result in misleading interpretations and incorrect conclusions. We examine the findings of Zamariola et al. (2018) by reanalyzing their data using statistical methods more adequate than the bivariate correlational analyses conducted by Zamariola et al. (2018) and by reinterpreting the results taking into account the fact that IAcc scores are ratio variables. Our findings indicate that the problems enlisted by Zamariola et al. (2018) can mainly be attributed to the statistical nature of IAcc scores and to the analysis approach of using bivariate correlations. We infer that the problems of IAcc scores mentioned by Zamariola et al. (2018) are not as serious as they might appear at first glance. In turn, we briefly mention some other problems of IAcc scores researchers may face based on the fact that ratio variables are bounded. Cysteine sulfinic acid (Cys-SO2-) is a protein post-translational modification that is formed reversibly under oxidative conditions. A short, encodable peptide was developed whose metal binding and terbium luminescence are dependent on cysteine (Cys) oxidation to the sulfinic acid. The protein design is based on the modification of a key metal-binding aspartate (Asp) in a canonical EF-Hand motif (DKDADGWISPAEAK) to Cys. In this design, Cys in the thiol oxidation state does not mimic the native Asp, and thus the peptide binds terbium(III) (Tb3+) poorly and exhibits weak terbium luminescence (fluorescence). In contrast, when Cys is oxidized to the Cys sulfinic acid oxoform, the Cys sulfinate effectively mimics Asp, resulting in a significant increase in terbium affinity and luminescence. Asp residues at positions 1, 3, and 5 of the EF-Hand motif were examined as potential sites for Cys oxidation-responsive metal binding. The peptide with Cys at residue 1 exhibited the highest Tb3+ affinity in both oxidation states.
