Recent studies have reassessed this taxon as a complex of six species. Amblyomma mixtum Koch, 1844 has been suggested by some authors as the only species of this complex that is present in Cuba. Other authors have pointed a niche overlapping for A. mixtum and A. cajennense s.s. in the country. Eprosartan Detailed taxonomic studies on the Cuban species belonging to this complex are needed in order to evaluate their current distribution according to the recent classification. This study aimed to characterize Cuban populations from the A. cajennense complex by using tick samples obtained from 3 occidental provinces and 1 central province of the country. Morphological identification and measurements of the main relevant taxonomic structures were conducted by using Scanning Electron Microscopy. Phylogenetic analyzes were carried out with 16S ribosomal RNA, internal transcribed spacer 2 and the subunit I of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase gene sequences. The results of these studies demonstrated that all samples belonged to the species A. mixtum (Koch, 1844). This study constitutes the first molecular characterization of this Amblyomma species in Cuba. Further studies will be necessary in order to corroborate if A. cajennense s.s. is also present in the island.Automatic segmentation on computed tomography images of kidney and liver tumors remains a challenging task due to heterogeneity and variation in shapes. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) deep convolutional neural networks have become popular in medical image segmentation tasks because they can leverage large labeled datasets, thus enabling them to learn hierarchical features. However, 3D networks have some drawbacks due to their high cost of computational resources. In this paper, we propose a hybrid 3D residual network (RN) with a squeeze-and-excitation (SE) block for volumetric segmentation of kidney, liver, and their associated tumors. The proposed network uses SE blocks to capture spatial information based on the reweighting function in a 3D RN. This study is the first to use an SE residual mechanism to process medical volumetric images using the proposed 3D residual network composed of various combinations of residual blocks. Our framework was evaluated both on the Kidney Tumor Segmentation 2019 dataset and the public MICCAI 2017 Liver Tumor Segmentation dataset. The results show that our architecture outperforms other state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, the SE-RN achieves good performance in volumetric biomedical segmentation.Facial mimicry is a ubiquitous social behaviour modulated by a range of social cues, including those related to reward value and self-relevance. However, previous research has typically focused on a single moderator at a time, and it remains unknown how moderators interact when studied together. We compared the influence of reward value and self-relevance, by conditioning participants to associate certain faces with winning or losing money for themselves, or, with winning or losing money for another person. After conditioning, participants watched videos of these faces making happy and angry facial expressions whilst we recorded facial electromyographic activity. We found greater smile mimicry (activation of the Zygomaticus Major muscle) in response to happy expressions performed by faces associated with participants' own outcomes vs. faces associated with another person's outcomes. In contrast to previous research, whether a face was associated with winning or losing money did not modulate facial mimicry responses. These results, although preliminary, suggest that when faces are associated with both self-relevance and reward value, self-relevance could supersede the impact of reward value during facial mimicry.Total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) in water, sediments, macrophytes, fish and human health risks were analyzed and assessed from abandoned gold mining ponds (AGMPs)/ mining areas in Western Colombia to know its present environmental condition. Concentrations of THg in water (avg. 13.0 ± 13.73 ng L-1) was above the EPA threshold level (12 ng L-1), suggesting possible chronic effects. Sediment sample revealed that the ponds are methylated (%MeHg 3.3-11). Macrophyte Eleocharis elegans presented higher THg content in the underground biomass (0.16 ± 0.13 µg g-1 dw) than in the aerial biomass (0.05 ± 0.04 µg g-1 dw) indicating accumulation of THg. MeHg was the most abundant chemical species in fish (MeHg/THg 83.2-95.0%), signifying higher bioavailability and its risk towards human health. Fish samples (15%) indicate that THg were above WHO limit (0.5 µg g), particularly in Ctenolucius beani, Hoplias malabaricus and lowest in Sternopygus aequilabiatus and Geophagus pellegrini. Bioaccumulation and biomagnification of MeHg were higher in the carnivores representing a source of exposure and potential threat to human health. Fulton's condition factor (K) for bioaccumulation indicate a decrease with increasing trophic level of fishes. Overall results suggest, mercury species found in different AGMPs compartments should be monitored in this region.This article seeks to present a summary of knowledge and thus improve awareness of microplastic impacts on corals. Recent research suggests that microplastics have a variety of species-specific impacts. Among them, a reduced growth, a substantial decrease of detoxifying and immunity enzymes, an increase in antioxidant enzyme activity, high production of mucus, reduction of fitness, and negative effects on coral-Symbiodiniaceae relationships have been highlighted in recent papers. In addition to this, tissue necrosis, lower fertilization success, alteration of metabolite profiles, energetic costs, decreased skeletal growth and calcification, and coral bleaching have been observed under significant concentrations of microplastics. Furthermore, impairment of feeding performance and food intake, changes in photosynthetic performance and increased exposure to contaminants, pathogens and other harmful compounds have also been found. In conclusion, microplastics may cause a plethora of impacts on corals in shallow, mesophotic, and deep-sea zones at different latitudes; underlining an emerging threat globally.

Natural killer (NK) cells and natural killer T (NKT) cells are implicated in the development and progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). Tumor cells express NK cell receptor ligands that modulate their function. This study aimed to investigate the expression of such ligands in CRC in relation to the phenotype of circulating NK- and NKT cells, and clinical outcome.

Primary tumor tissues were analyzed for protein expression of NK cell ligands using immunohistochemistry with automated image analysis in a cohort of 78 CRC patients. For 24 of the 78 patients, RNA expression of NK cell ligands was analyzed in primary tumor tissue using RNA sequencing. Receptor expression on circulating NK- and NKT cells was previously measured by us in 71 of the 78 patients using flow cytometry.

High Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen (PCNA) protein expression in the primary tumor associated with shorter disease-free survival (DFS) of CRC patients (P = 0.026). A trend was observed towards shorter DFS in CRC patients with above-median galectin-3 protein expression in the primary tumor (P = 0.055). High protein expression of galectin-3, CD1d, and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I, and high RNA expression of UL16-binding protein (ULBP)-1, -2, and -5, and HLA-E in the tumor tissue correlated with low expression of the corresponding receptors on circulating NK- or NKT cells (P < 0.05).

Although limited to the kidney, in up to 20% of patients MN is associated with other autoimmune, infectious or malignant diseases. The initial pathogenetic event in what is still considered "primary" MN is the binding of circulating autoantibodies to proteins (autoantigens) expressed in glomerular podocytes. This antibody binding leads to the formation of immune complexes in the glomerular basement membrane. There is clinical and experimental evidence that these immune deposits lead to the activation of the complement system. Experimental studies in the MN model of Heymann's nephritis show that the terminal membrane attack complex (MAC) of the complement system induces a disturbance of the glomerular filtration barrier and leads to proteinuria, the clinical hallmark of MN. After the discovery of the phospholipase A2 receptor 1 and thrombospondin type 1 domain containing protein 7A as endogenous antigens, it is assumed that IgG4 antibodies directed against these proteins induce MN in over 85% of patients with primary MN. As a result, the role of complement in the pathogenesis of MN needs to be defined in light of these developments. In this review we describe the current knowledge on the function of the complement system in primary MN and discuss the open questions, which have to be solved for a better understanding of the potential role of complement in the pathophysiology of primary MN.Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a potential technology for CO2 recycling, but insufficient information is available on the microbial interactions underpinning electrochemically-assisted reactions. In this study, a MES reactor was operated for 225 days alternately with bicarbonate or CO2 as carbon source, under batch or continuous feeding regimens, to evaluate the response of the microbial communities, and their productivity, to dynamic operating conditions. A stable acetic acid production rate of 9.68 g m-2 d-1, and coulombic efficiency up to 40%, was achieved with continuous CO2 sparging, higher than the rates obtained with bicarbonate (0.94 g m-2 d-1) and CO2 under fed-batch conditions (2.54 g m-2 d-1). However, the highest butyric acid production rate (0.39 g m-2 d-1) was achieved with intermittent CO2 sparging. The microbial community analyses focused on differential amplicon sequence variants (ASVs), allowing detection of ASVs significantly different across consecutive samples. This analysis, combined with co-occurence network analysis, and cyclic voltammetry, indicated that hydrogen-mediated acetogenesis was carried out by Clostridium, Eubacterium and Acetobacterium, whereas Oscillibacter and Caproiciproducens were involved in butyric acid production.
