Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are pluripotent stem cells with self-renewal and multidirectional differentiation capabilities. Dimethyloxalyl glycine (DMOG) mobilizes MSCs, and the hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) signaling pathway plays an important role in MSC mobilization. We aimed to investigate the effect of DMOG on the HIF-1 pathway in MSCs. Rats were treated with DMOG, and the numbers of peripheral blood MSCs (PB-MSCs) and bone marrow MSCs (BM-MSCs) were detected by the Colony-forming unit fibroblastic (CFU-F) method. The growth curve, cell cycle and migration ability of PB-MSCs and BM-MSCs were detected by CCK-8, Flow cytometry and Transwell assays. Western blotting and real-time qPCR were used to detect the expression of the HIF-1 pathway. The number of bone marrow microvessels was detected by immunohistochemistry. DMOG significantly increased the numbers of PB-MSCs and BM-MSCs (P  less then  0.05). Further, the MSCs in peripheral blood and bone marrow still had the ability to proliferate and migrate after mobilization by DMOG. The expression levels of HIF-1α, stromal cell-derived factor-1α (SDF-1α) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in MSCs were significantly regulated by DMOG (P  less then  0.05). The number of bone marrow microvessels decreased after the VEGF/VEGFR signaling pathway was blocked by SU5416 (P  less then  0.05). Therefore, these findings demonstrated that DMOG regulates the HIF-1α signaling pathway and promotes biological effects in MSCs.With the increasing demand for small-scale photodetector devices, quantum dot-based infrared photodetectors have attracted more and more attention in the past decades. In this work, periodic metal nanohole array structures are introduced to the quantum dot infrared photodetectors to enhance the photon absorptivity performance via the surface plasmon enhancement effect in order to overcome the bottleneck of low optical absorption efficiency that exists in conventional photodetectors. The results demonstrate that the optimized metal nanohole array structures can greatly enhance the photon absorptivity up to 86.47% in the specific photodetectors, which is 1.89 times than that of conventional photodetectors without the metal array structures. The large enhancement of the absorptivity can be attributed to the local coupling surface plasmon effect caused by the metal nanohole array structures. It is believed that the study can provide certain theoretical guidance for high-performance nanoscale quantum dot-based infrared photodetectors.BACKGROUND Alertness is an important part of attention which is different from the opposite of sleepiness. This study aimed to translate and assess the measurement properties of the Toronto Hospital Alertness Test (THAT) in Hong Kong Chinese population. METHODS The standard forward-backward translation procedure and cognitive debriefing were conducted to obtain the Chinese THAT. One hundred Chinese adults completed the Chinese THAT, the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) by telephone interviews. RESULTS The factorial validity was assessed by confirmatory factor analysis, and the internal reliability was examined by coefficient omega. The two negatively worded items of the THAT had low factor loadings and were removed. One more item was removed based on the modification indices of the eight-item model. The remaining seven-item THAT showed satisfactory unidimensionality with root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.06, standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) = 0.08, and comparative fit index (CFI) = 1.00. The coefficient omega of the seven-item Chinese THAT was 0.80 (95% CI 0.74-0.86). Zosuquidar Convergent validity was demonstrated with THAT moderately associated with CES-D (r = - 0.45, P  less then  0.01), PSQI (r = - 0.40, P  less then  0.01), and AIS (r = - 0.45, P  less then  0.01). CONCLUSIONS The Chinese version of THAT demonstrated acceptable reliability and validity in a Chinese population.INTRODUCTION Women and healthcare providers lack adequate information on medication safety during pregnancy. While resources describing fetal risk are available, information is provided in multiple locations, often with subjective assessments of available data. We developed a list of medications of greatest concern during pregnancy to help healthcare providers counsel reproductive-aged and pregnant women. METHODS Prescription drug labels submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration with information in the Teratogen Information System (TERIS) and/or Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation by Briggs & Freeman were included (N = 1,186 medications; 766 from three data sources, 420 from two). We used two supervised learning methods ('support vector machine' and 'sentiment analysis') to create prediction models based on narrative descriptions of fetal risk. Two models were created per data source. Our final list included medications categorized as 'high' risk in at least four of six models (if three data sources) or three of four models (if two data sources). RESULTS We classified 80 prescription medications as being of greatest concern during pregnancy; over half were antineoplastic agents (n = 24), angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (n = 10), angiotensin II receptor antagonists (n = 8), and anticonvulsants (n = 7). DISCUSSION This evidence-based list could be a useful tool for healthcare providers counseling reproductive-aged and pregnant women about medication use during pregnancy. However, providers and patients may find it helpful to weigh the risks and benefits of any pharmacologic treatment for both pregnant women and the fetus when managing medical conditions before and during pregnancy.INTRODUCTION Unplanned pregnancies lead to adverse health outcomes and contribute to economic burdens. A lack of continuity and consistency in immediate postpartum care may be a contributor. The most frequent postpartum medical encounters occur with the child's pediatric health care provider, which represents an opportunity to discuss postpartum contraception. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate postpartum family planning knowledge and behavior in women, and to assess the potential acceptability of a pediatrician-delivered intervention to improve knowledge of and convenient access to contraception among postpartum women. METHODS This was a non-interventional pilot study that employed survey and interview methodology. RESULTS Women attending pediatric visits for their newborn or infant (N = 346) were surveyed; 35 were interviewed. On average, respondents were 27 years old (SD = 6), 6 months postpartum (SD = 5), and resumed sex 8 weeks after delivery (SD = 6). Of those who had resumed sex, 68% were not using contraception at the time.
