Radioactive iodine (RAI) is considered the gold standard treatment for feline hyperthyroidism. Currently exposure limits to radiation are regulated by national legislation, therefore the length of the isolation period in hospital for cats receiving radioactive treatment varies according to the place where the radioactive facility is located. The aim of this study was to establish when retained radioactivity decreases in cats receiving subcutaneous I-131 to a level that would allow discharge of cats from the hospital while being compliant with current United Kingdom legislation.

Clinical records of cats treated with subcutaneous I-131 were retrospectively reviewed. Radioactive emission rates were measured using an external probe. Retained radioactivity below 11 MBq at the point of discharge was required by the initial risk assessment to ensure that a 0.3 mSv dose constraint was maintained for owners following standard cat-owner contact restrictions. Average retained activity for each treatment regimen at the time of discharge was calculated. The biological half-life for iodine retention was also calculated.

Overall, an end activity below 11 MBq was reached at day 11 in 49% of cats, and at day 13 in 91% of cats. These cats were allowed to be discharged according to UK legislation, as long as contact restrictions were applied at home for 2weeks.

Based on our study, an isolation period of 13 days before allowing discharge of cats treated with subcutaneous RAI (I-131) is compliant with current UK legislation.

Much of the social skills intervention literature involves goals that have been selected through interviews and direct observation of behavior without a reference to desired outcomes. The purpose of the current study was to extend research on descriptive assessments of conversations by including additional measures and examining conversational behavior across contexts. We conducted a descriptive assessment of social skills exhibited by 16 neurotypical young adults. Participants had 10-min conversations in groups and 1-on-1 with friends and novel individuals. We then assessed variability within and across participants on a wide array of relevant measures. Throughout the conversations, participants shared the conversation time equally, spent most of the conversation time making on-topic comments, and gazed at their conversation partner more frequently while listening than while speaking. These descriptive data extend current research, inform future experimental analyses, and may guide clinical decisions.

Migraine has been associated with many comorbidities. However, lifestyle factors and the presence of comorbid diseases have not previously been extensively studied in the same sample. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of unhealthy lifestyle factors and comorbid diseases between patients with migraine and migraine-free controls with subgroup analyses to determine the pathophysiology and possible consequences.

This cross-sectional study recruited 1257 patients with migraine between the ages of 20 and 65years from a headache outpatient clinic in Taiwan and 496 non-migraine controls. All participants completed questionnaires regarding demographics, migraine diagnosis, sleep, headache burden, and medical, pain, and psychiatric conditions. Participants also underwent a structured interview. The associations between comorbidities and migraine were investigated and further stratified by sex and aura.

Patients with migraine with aura had an unhealthier lifestyle compared with controls in the form of curs of smoking and medical, psychiatric, and pain conditions than non-treatment-seeking healthy controls who were recruited from the community. Understanding the relationship between migraine and comorbid diseases may improve medical care as well as the quality of life. Our study briefly reviews the data sources and methods used in compiling the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) GLOBOCAN cancer statistics for the year 2020 and summarises the main results. National estimates were calculated based on the best available data on cancer incidence from population-based cancer registries (PBCR) and mortality from the World Health Organization mortality database. Cancer incidence and mortality rates for 2020 by sex and age groups were estimated for 38 cancer sites and 185 countries or territories worldwide. There were an estimated 19.3 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 19.0-19.6 million) new cases of cancer (18.1 million excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) and almost 10.0 million (95% UI 9.7-10.2 million) deaths from cancer (9.9 million excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) worldwide in 2020. The most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide were female breast cancer (2.26 million cases), lung (2.21) and prostate cancers (1.41); the most common causes of cancer death were lung (1.79 million deaths), liver (830000) and stomach cancers (769000).Silk fibroin (SF) from Bombyx mori has superior properties as both a textile and a biomaterial, and has been used to functionalize the surfaces of various medical inorganic materials including titanium (Ti). In this study, we endowed SF with reversible binding ability to Ti by embedding a titanium binding motif (minTBP-1 and RKLPDA). Artificial SF proteins were first created by conjugating gene cassettes for SF motif (AGSGAG) and minTBP-1 motif with different ratios, which have been shown to bind reversibly to Ti surfaces in quartz crystal microbalance analyses. Based on these results, the functionalized SF (TiBP-SF) containing the designed peptide [TS[(AGSGAG)3 AS]2 RKLPDAS]8 was prepared from the cocoon of transgenic B. mori, which accelerates the ossific differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells when coated on titanium substrates. Thus, TiBP-SF presents an alternative for endowing the surfaces of titanium materials with osseointegration functionality, which would allow the exploration of potential applications in the medical field. The pathogenic role of intronic variants is generally difficult to assess, except for those near known splice sites for which aberrant splicing is suspected, although deeper intronic variants can also alter splicing. We have identified a novel (NM_213599.2c.1180+6T>C) ANO5 variant that causes the exclusion of exon 12. The mutation, identified in a Roma individual, has an estimated carrier rate of 1.68% among the Iberian Roma population, this being the first ANO5 pathogenic variant communicated in this ethnic group. In this study, we have also characterized the ANO5 splice forms expressed in human muscle with the detection of an alternative transcript, in which exons 8 and 9 are spliced out.

Brachial index is a skeletal ratio that describes the relative length of the distal forelimb. Over the course of hominin evolution, a shift toward smaller brachial indices occurred. First, Pleistocene australopiths yield values between extant chimpanzees and humans, with further evolution in Pliocene Homo to the modern human range. We hypothesized that shorter distal forelimbs benefit walking and running performance, notably elbow and shoulder joint torques, and predicted that the benefit would be greater in running compared to walking.

We tested our hypothesis in a modern human sample walking and running while carrying hand weights, which increase the inertia (mass and effective length) of the distal forelimb, simulating a larger brachial index.

We found longer distal forelimbs and the added mass increased elbow muscle torque by 98% while walking and 70% in running, confirming our hypothesis that shorter distal forelimbs benefit walking and running performance. Shoulder muscle torque similarly increased in both gaits with the addition of hand weights due to elongation of the effective forelimb length. link2 Normalized elbow torque, which accounted for the effect on shoulder torque caused by the experimental manipulation, increased by 16% while walking but 52% while running, indicating that shorter distal forelimbs provide a greater benefit for running by approximately three-fold.

Selection for economical bipedal walking in Australopithecus and endurance running in Homo likely contributed to the shift toward relatively smaller distal forelimbs across hominin evolution, with modern human proportions attained in Pleistocene Homo erectus and retained in later species.

Frailty screening using the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) has been proposed to guide resource allocation in acute care settings during the pandemic. However, the association between frailty and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) prognosis remains unclear.

To investigate the association between frailty and mortality over 6months in middle-aged and older patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and the association between acute morbidity severity and mortality across frailty strata.

Observational cohort study.

Large academic medical center in Brazil.

A total of 1830 patients aged ≥50 years hospitalized with COVID-19 (March-July 2020).

We screened baseline frailty using the CFS (1-9) and classified patients as fit to managing well (1-3), vulnerable (4), mildly (5), moderately (6), or severely frail to terminally ill (7-9). We also computed a frailty index (0-1; frail >0.25), a well-known frailty measure. link3 We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the association between frailty and time to deain prognostication and resource allocation in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Our results encourage the use of frailty, alongside measures of acute morbidity, to guide clinicians in prognostication and resource allocation in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.Virus-based biologicals are one of the most promising biopharmaceuticals of the 21st century medicine and play a significant role in the development of innovative therapeutic, prophylactic, and clinical applications. Oncolytic virus manufacturing scale can range from 5 L in research and development up to 50 L for clinical studies and reach hundreds of liters for commercial scale. The inherent productivity and high integration potential of periodic counter-current chromatography (PCC) offer a transversal solution to decrease equipment footprint and the reduction of several non-value-added unit operations. We report on the design of an efficient PCC process applied to the intermediate purification of oncolytic adenovirus. The developed ion-exchange chromatographic purification method was carried out using a four-column setup for three different scenarios (i) variation in the feedstock, (ii) potential use of a post-load washing step to improve virus recovery, and (iii) stability during extended operation. Obtained virus recoveries (57%-86%) and impurity reductions (>80% DNA, and >70% total protein) match or overcome batch purification.
