Silicon nanocrystals (Si NCs) have received surging interest as a type of quantum dot (QD) due to the availability of silicon in nature, tunable fluorescence emission properties and excellent biocompatibility. More importantly, compared with many group II-VI and III-V based QDs, they have low toxicity. Here, thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)-functional Si NCs were firstly prepared for thermoresponsive detection of cancer cells. Si NCs were prepared under normal pressure with excellent water solubility. Then folic acid was bonded to the silicon nanocrystals through the reaction of amino and carboxyl groups for specific recognition of cancer cells. The folic-acid-modified silicon crystals (Si NCs-FA) could be modified by a one-pot copolymerization process into PNIPAAm nanospheres during the monomer polymerization process (i.e., Si NCs-FA-PNIPAAm) just by controlling the temperature below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and above the LCST. The results showed that the Si-FA-PNIAAm nanospheres exhibited not only reversible temperature-responsive on-off fluorescence properties, but also can be used as temperature indicators in cancer cells.

Physical activity reduces psychosocial stress in pregnant women. Stress levels might be self-reported (psychosocial) or measured with biomarkers, one of which is hair cortisol concentration (HCC). Additionally, personality has been associated with stress and physical activity.

The first aim of our study was to explore the differences in self-reported stress assessed by the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and in HCC with regard to physical activity level in pregnant (N

29) and non-pregnant (N = 21) women. The second aim was to analyze the correlations among perceived stress, HCC, frequency of exercise and personality in the two groups separately.

There was a significant difference in frequency of exercise and self-reported stress between the two groups, with a lower level in pregnant women, but no differences in HCC and in personality were found. In the group of pregnant women, there was a significant negative correlation between HCC and frequency of exercise sessions, with the latter correlating positively with openness to experience. In the group of non-pregnant women, perceived stress negatively correlated with extraversion, agreeableness and emotional stability. HCC correlated negatively with conscientiousness.

Nowadays, it is possible to manipulate microbiota by administering prebiotics, probiotics or synbiotics, through fecal microbiota transplantation in selected cases. In this scenario, pancreatic disorders might be influenced by gut microbiota and this relationship could be an innovative and inspiring field of research. However, data are still scarce and controversial. Microbiota manipulation could represent an important therapeutic strategy in the pancreatic diseases, in addition to standard therapies. The purpose of this study was to describe the self-rated depressive symptoms in children with and without CP and to investigate the associated predictors. Participants included 24 children with CP and 33 typically developing (TD) children. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Birleson Depression Self-Rating Scale for Children. Parents of the participants completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Severity of self-rated depressive symptoms was higher in children with CP than that in TD children. Thirty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly allocated to three experimental groups (1) CKD induced by partial nephrectomy receiving high (1.2%) dietary phosphorus; (2) CKD receiving low (0.2%) dietary phosphorus; and (3) sham-operated controls receiving 1.2% phosphorus. After 14 days the animals were sacrificed and plasma MVs counted by nanoparticle tracking analysis.
