Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune, inflammatory, demyelinating neurodegenerative disease progressing with attacks. Alpha-synuclein (α-Syn), a neuronal protein, has been previously associated with the inflammation and development of neurodegenerative diseases. Although the cause of neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis is mainly associated with inflammation, α-Syn may play a role in the pathogenesis of MS, as in other classical neurodegenerative diseases such as synucleinopathies. In multiple sclerosis, α-Syn has been directly studied in central nervous system lesions and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). However, there are few studies approaching variations in peripheral α-Syn in MS. The aim of our study was to investigate the correlation between disease progression and other clinical parameters by measuring serum α-Syn and oligomer α-Syn levels in MS patients.

The study included 60 MS patients aged 18years or older who were admitted to the Department of Neurology between 01.02.2020-01.04.2020 and diagnneed for further studies on this subject.Quantified profiling and quantitative analysis of multi-components by single marker (QAMS) method were combined to control the quality consistency of Rong'e Yishen oral liquid (REYS) in this paper. Firstly, High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with diode array detection (DAD) was applied to collect fingerprints and establish a content determination method. Then, two methods of QAMS and the external standard method (ESM) were used for comparative study to investigate the feasibility of the former to accurately control the quality of individual marker. The results showed that there was no significant difference in quantitative determination between QAMS and ESM (t test, P>0.05). Sodium benzoate, as an internal reference standard (IRS), can be used to simultaneously quantify Icariin, Echinacoside, and Acteoside three components of the oral liquid. Finally, the fingerprint of 15 batches of REYSs was assessed by SQFM with Hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA). The result of the quality evaluation demonstrated that 15 batches were divided into 3 levels and had good quality consistency. What's more, the content percentage of the dominant three medicinal markers and their total amount presented a close correlation with the macro quantitative similarity (Pm) of samples. Thus, quantified profiling combined with QAMS, which is systematic, simple, rigorous, and objective, could be a novel method to evaluate the quality consistency of REYS or even other traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

Age-related breast cancer treatment variance is widespread with many older women having primary endocrine therapy (PET), which may contribute to inferior survival and local control. This propensity-matched study determined if a subgroup of older women may safely be offered PET.

Multicentre, prospective, UK, observational cohort study with propensity-matched analysis to determine optimal allocation of surgery plus ET (S+ET) or PET in women aged ≥70 with breast cancer. Data on fitness, frailty, cancer stage, grade, biotype, treatment and quality of life were collected. Propensity-matching (based on age, health status and cancer stage) adjusted for allocation bias when comparing S+ET with PET.

A total of 3416 women (median age 77, range 69-102) were recruited from 56 breast units-2854 (88%) had ER+breast cancer 2354 had S+ET and 500 PET. Median follow-up was 52 months. Patients treated with PET were older and frailer than patients treated with S+ET. Unmatched overall survival was inferior in the PET group pectancy (>90 years or >85 with comorbidities or frailty) individualised decision making regarding PET versus S+ET may be appropriate and safe to offer. Participants were asked to perform a tone discrimination task via a bimanual keypress response and a modified Stroop task via a vocal response serially as Task 1 and Task 2, respectively. In two experiments, participants made a series of true/false judgments about a prime statement, which reflected a general semantic fact, a context-dependent (e.g., repeated event) or context-independent (e.g., trait), personal semantic fact and then retrieved a specific past episodic memory. There was a significantly stronger priming effect for accessing specific episodic memories after judging personal semantic facts versus general facts. We also found that context-dependent and -independent personal semantic facts had separable priming effects on episodic memory. This study investigates the feasibility of using dedicated MR-compatible ionization chambers at MR-integrated radiotherapy devices. MR-compatible ionization chambers (Exradin A19MR, A1SLMR, A26MR, A28MR) were precisely modeled and their relative response in a 6MV treatment beam in the presence of a magnetic field was simulated using EGSnrc. Monte Carlo simulations were carried out with the magnetic field in three orientations the magnetic field aligned perpendicular to the chamber and beam axis (transverse orientation), the magnetic field parallel to the chamber as well as parallel to the beam axis. Monte Carlo simulation results were validated with measurements using an electromagnet with magnetic field strength upto 1.1 T with the chambers in transverse orientation. The measurements and simulation results were in good agreement, except for the A26MR ionization chamber in transverse orientation. The maximum increase in response of the ionization chambers observed was 8.6% for the transverse orientation. No appreciable change in chamber response due to the magnetic field was observed for the magnetic field parallel to the ionization chamber and parallel to the photon beam. Polarity and recombination correction factor were experimentally investigated in the transverse orientation. The polarity effect and recombination effect were not altered by a magnetic field. This study further investigates the response of the ionization chambers as a function of the chambers' rotation around their longitudinal axis. Food contact surfaces were sampled over a 100 cm2 area in five commercial apple packinghouses to evaluate populations of indicator organisms APC, Enterobacteriaceae, coliforms, E. coli (n = 741), and rapid test readings (n = 659). Petrifilm plates were used for the quantificationf any common indicator organisms or the detection of Listeria spp. These findings emphasize the need to utilize a rapid test, which can be a good indicator of residual matter on a surface, along with traditional microbiological methods to assess cleaning and sanitation practices in apple packinghouses.Humans learn languages in real-life situations by integrating multiple signals, including linguistic forms, their meanings, and the actions and intentions of speakers. However, little is known about the neural bases underlying the social learning of a second language (L2) in adults. In this study, 36 adults were asked to learn two sets of L2 spoken words through translation versus simulated social interactive videos (social learning). Brain activation during word learning was measured using fMRI. Greater activation was observed in the bilateral superior temporal sulcus, posterior middle temporal gyri, and right inferior parietal lobule during social learning as compared with translation learning. Furthermore, higher activity in the right temporal parietal junction, right hippocampus, and motor areas was observed during the initial stage of social learning, with the more successful performance being at the time of overnight testing. In this review article, we provide an overview of the extant literature using functional and structural neuroimaging data revealing the signatures of brain plasticity underlying near-normal language development.Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with an action language deficit. Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN DBS) deteriorates verbal fluency, but may improve verb naming more than nouns in PD. We investigated effects of grammatical class (verb vs noun), action content (action vs non-action) of words and unilateral, bilateral or no stimulation on naming. Nouns were named more accurately and faster by controls and PD participants; however the noun-verb difference was higher for PD participants. Language, executive and visuospatial function deficits in PD accounted for this difference between PD group and controls. Noun-verb difference was accounted by differences in imageability, familiarity and complexity of the stimuli. Non-action words were named more accurately than action words in the overall sample. Stimulation conditions did not have an effect on naming. This study in Turkish-speaking participants show an action language deficit due to underlying cognitive deficits without an STN DBS effect in PD.
