In conclusion, OE and GT did not expressively affect immunological attributes in blood but reduce some oxidative stress biomarkers without compromising productive traits of Jersey cows during the transition period.Genetic parameters were estimated for cold carcase weight (CCW), carcase conformation (CON), carcase fat class (FAT), age at slaughter (AGE) and average daily carcase gain (ADCG) in 14 common UK breeds of cattle. These included crossbred animals but purebred datasets were also analysed for the most populous sire-breeds. Heritability estimates for beef breeds that were significant ranged from 0.24 to 0.44, 0.12 to 0.35, 0.12 to 0.36, 0.15 to 0.38 and 0.26 to 0.43 for CCW, CON, FAT, AGE and ADCG, respectively. For Holstein-Friesian, a dairy breed, heritability estimates were consistently lower than most beef breeds with estimates of 0.12, 0.13, 0.13, 0.06 and 0.15 for CCW, CON, FAT, AGE and ADCG, respectively. In all breed groups, genetic correlations were positive between CCW, CON and ADCG. In general, genetic correlations were moderate between CCW and CON (0.13 to 0.77), moderate to strong between CCW and ADCG (0.57 to 0.98) and weak or moderate between CON and ADCG (0.12 to 0.82). This knowledge can be used in breeding programs improving somatic cell count (SCC) level. The objective of this study was to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations among test-day (TD) somatic cell score (SCS) and selected milking traits, such as daily milk yield (MY), milking frequency (MF), milking time (MT) and milking speed (MS), attachment time (AT) to single teat cups, electrical conductivity (EC) and milk temperature (MTEMP). Data were collected for 1899 Polish Holstein-Friesian primiparous cows milked in an automatic milking system. Genetic parameters of the studied traits were estimated using Bayesian method via Gibbs sampling and two-trait random regression animal model with fixed effect of herd x TD, fixed regressions on days in milk (DIM) nested within age at calving by season of calving and RR for additivserved between SCS and MS (0.311) and with MTEMP (0.286). In summary, it is concluded that there is a chance to carry out effective selection for lower SCS and for some other traits, in particular MS and MTEMP. The obtained results are promising enough to conduct further research to evaluate how these traits can be used both to increase the accuracy of genetic evaluations of SCC and to improve udder health.Lowland-type Racka is an indigenous sheep breed that beside Hungarian Grey cattle and Mangalitza pig is one of the national symbols of Hungary. However, the genetic description of Racka sheep has not yet been conducted based on whole-genome screening. By using the Geneseek Ovine SNP50 BeadChip, we have sampled the genome of 126 Black and 128 White Racka sheep. For comparative purposes, we used 134 Hungarian Merinos and further 3345 animals from 81 different breeds have been included from an available database. Performance of a multidimensional scaling plot showed that White and Black Rackas represent well-separated groups among other sheep breeds and clustered separately from each other. However, the number and total length of Runs of Homozygosity was similar to other sheep breeds, except Soay. The inbreeding coefficients (method-of-moments relatedness F coefficient) of Black and White Racka were 0.147 and 0.133, respectively. Based on multidimensional scaling and admixture analyses and on comparisons of genetic distances of the investigated 84 populations, we suggest considering the colour variants of Racka as genetically differentiated breeds. The most differentiated markers between Black and White Racka highlight several candidate genes including 5-Hydroxytryptamine Receptor 5A, Insulin Induced Gene 1, Cyclin Dependent Kinase 5 and Melanocortin 1 Receptor. The results of this study help the recognition of Racka as a unique genetic resource among sheep and pave the way of application of genome screens to guide the resolution of questions arising among breeders.There is a growing interest to improve feed efficiency (FE) traits in cattle. The genomic selection was proposed to improve these traits since they are difficult and expensive to measure. Up to date, there are scarce studies about the implementation of genomic selection for FE traits in indicine cattle under different scenarios of pseudo-phenotypes, models, and validation strategies on a commercial large scale. Thus, the aim was to evaluate the feasibility of genomic selection implementation for FE traits in Nelore cattle applying different models and pseudo-phenotypes under validation strategies. Phenotypic and genotypic information from 4 329 and 3 467 animals were used, respectively, which were tested for residual feed intake, DM intake, feed efficiency, feed conversion ratio, residual BW gain, and residual intake and BW gain. Six prediction methods were used single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction, Bayes A, Bayes B, Bayes Cπ, Bayesian least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (BLASSO), a(0.17) than EBV accuracy (0.14) and age (0.13). These results would support breeders to identify genomic approaches that are more viable for genomic prediction for FE-related traits.Ethanol extract of mango seeds (EEMS) are composed of several polyphenolic compounds with considerable in vitro antioxidant activity that can be used in pig feed and may contribute positively to meat quality characteristics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of EEMS as a source of antioxidants in growing-finishing pig diets on meat quality, lipid stability, sulfhydryl groups non-proteinaceous (SG-NP), total phenolic compounds, total antioxidant potential and total antioxidant activity of meat after 1 and 7 days of refrigeration storage. Thirty-two (60-day-old) barrows, weighing 20.20 ± 1.34 kg, were used in a randomized block design consisting of eight animals with four treatment regimens. Treatments consisted of Control = no dietary antioxidant; butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) = diet with 200 ppm BHT; EEMS200 = diet with 200 ppm EEMS; EEMS400 = diet with 400 ppm EEMS. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two rearing systems (intensive vs semi-intensive housing) on growth performance, carcass quality, and selected physical meat quality traits of two commercial strains of Pekin ducks. The study was performed on 240 one-day-old Pekin ducklings of two different strains (120 ducklings of STAR 53 medium hybrid and 120 ducklings of SM3 heavy hybrid) during a 49-day period. Half the birds (120) were reared in a complete confinement system on a floor (intensive system), while the remaining 120 ducks had access to land outside (semi-intensive system). Growth performance of ducks was determined by BW, weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio (FCR), carcass quality by dressing percentage, percentage of basic cuts in carcasses, and content of various tissues in basic cuts, while meat quality was determined by pH, drip loss, cooking loss, Warner-Bratzler growth performance results and better physical meat quality traits than did ducks from the semi-intensive system.According to the Regulation No. 1831/2003 of the European Parliament and European Union Council, the use of antibiotics as a dietary supplements has been prohibited. Inulin-type fructans can stimulate mineral absorption from the gut. Additionally, it may regulate energy metabolism and activate enzymatic mechanisms preventing oxidative stress. The goal of the present study was to estimate the influence of dietary supplementation with dried chicory root or native chicory inulin on 1) liver histology; 2) liver and kidney lipid metabolism indices, activity of selected enzymes, concentration of macro- and micronutrients and heavy metals; 3) blood plasma, liver and kidney oxidative stress biomarkers and 4) blood plasma water-electrolyte homeostasis indices in growing pigs. However, very few nutritional studies have addressed suboptimal temperature. We evaluated the effect of two temperatures (20 or 30 °C) and two vegetable oil blends (one rich in corn oil (COR) and one rich linseed oil (LIN)) on tilapia growth, body composition, and blood parameters using a 2×2 factorial design with the following treatments COR-20; LIN-20; COR-30; LIN-30 (Trial 1). In addition, we also evaluated the effect of postingestive signals of dietary oils when the organoleptic properties of diets were isolated (Trial 2). In the Trial 1, 256 fish (15.36 ± 0.14 g) were placed in 16 aquariums and submitted during 30 days to the 2×2 factorial designs COR-20; LIN-20; COR-30; LIN-30. The temperatures were established in two independent water recirculation systems. In the Trial 2, 96 fish (34.02 ± 0.79 g) were placed in 12 aquariums and subjected to the same experimental design of Trial 1, but to evaluate fish feeding behavior. They were allowed to select the encapsulated diets provided in different feeding halls to evaluate if diet preferences are influenced by postingestive signals.
