The Mediterranean diet (MD) is associated with many health benefits. The association between the MD and food neophobia (FN) is still unexplored in adults. The present cross-sectional study was aimed to explore the relationships between adherence to the MD, FN, and sociodemographic variables in a large Italian cohort. Familiarity and frequency use (FFI) of prototypical and non-prototypical Mediterranean foods were used to calculate a new adherence index the Italian Taste Mediterranean Index (ITMI). The FFI of all Mediterranean foods increased with age, while butter, soft drinks, red/cured meat, and sweets were more common in younger people. Accordingly, ITMI increased with age (F2,2384 = 54.11; p less then 0.0001). Women recorded a higher ITMI (6.70) than men (6.10). Individuals with high FN showed higher FFI for soft drinks and sweets and lower ones for most typical MD foods, than individuals with low FNs. A decrease of ITMI was recorded with the increase of the FN(F2,2384 = 22.84; p less then 0.0001). With ageing, ITMI increased even in individuals with a high FN. The results suggest that FN may negatively affect adherence to the MD, lowering its potential health benefits, in the adult population. Monitoring of food habits, dietary education, and anxiety management, may be valuable tools to control FN and support the adherence to the MD.The biological activity of Rhinella icterica parotoid secretion (RIPS) and some of its chromatographic fractions (RI18, RI19, RI23, and RI24) was evaluated in the current study. Mass spectrometry of these fractions indicated the presence of sarmentogenin, argentinogenin, (5β,12β)-12,14-dihydroxy-11-oxobufa-3,20,22-trienolide, marinobufagin, bufogenin B, 11α,19-dihydroxy-telocinobufagin, bufotalin, monohydroxylbufotalin, 19-oxo-cinobufagin, 3α,12β,25,26-tetrahydroxy-7-oxo-5β-cholestane-26-O-sulfate, and cinobufagin-3-hemisuberate that were identified as alkaloid and steroid compounds, in addition to marinoic acid and N-methyl-5-hydroxy-tryptamine. In chick brain slices, all fractions caused a slight decrease in cell viability, as also seen with the highest concentration of RIPS tested. In chick biventer cervicis neuromuscular preparations, RIPS and all four fractions significantly inhibited junctional acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. In this preparation, only fraction RI23 completely mimicked the pharmacological profile of RIPS, which included a transient facilitation in the amplitude of muscle twitches followed by progressive and complete neuromuscular blockade. Mass spectrometric analysis showed that RI23 consisted predominantly of bufogenins, a class of steroidal compounds known for their cardiotonic activity mediated by a digoxin- or ouabain-like action and the blockade of voltage-dependent L-type calcium channels. These findings indicate that the pharmacological activities of RI23 (and RIPS) are probably mediated by (1) inhibition of AChE activity that increases the junctional content of Ach; (2) inhibition of neuronal Na+/K+-ATPase, leading to facilitation followed by neuromuscular blockade; and (3) blockade of voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels, leading to stabilization of the motor endplate membrane. Background Hyperglycemia at the time of hospital admission is associated with higher morbidity and mortality rates in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Using data from the Chang Gung Research Database (CGRD), this study aimed to compare mortality outcomes between patients with stress-induced hyperglycemia (SIH), diabetic hyperglycemia (DH), and nondiabetic normoglycemia (NDN). The study occurred at Keelung, Linkou, Chiayi, and Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospitals (CGMHs). Methods A total of 1166, 6318, 3622, and 5599 health records from Keelung, Linkou, Chiayi, and Kaohsiung CGMHs, respectively, were retrieved from the CGRD for hospitalized patients with TBI between January 2001 and December 2015. After propensity score matching for sex, age, and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, the matched cohorts were compared to evaluate differences in the primary outcome between patients with SIH, DH, and NDN. In-hospital mortality was the primary outcome. Results The analysis of matched patient populations revealed that at the Kaohsiung CGMH, patients with SIH had 1.63-fold (95% CI 1.09-2.44; p = 0.017) and 1.91-fold (95% CI 1.12-3.23; p = 0.017) higher odds of mortality than patients with NDN and DH, respectively. Similar patterns were found at the Linkou CGMH; patients with SIH had higher odds of mortality than patients with NDN and DH. In contrast, at the Keelung CGMH, patients with SIH had significantly higher odds of mortality than those with NDN (OR 3.25; 95% CI 1.06-9.97; p = 0.039). At the Chiayi CGMH, there were no significant differences in mortality rates among all groups. Conclusions This study's results suggest that SIH and DH differ in their effect on the outcomes of patients with TBI. The results were similar between medical centers but not nonmedical centers; in the medical centers, patients with SIH had significantly higher odds of mortality than patients with either NDN or DH.The effect of low-frequency electromagnetic fields on the micro-structure and macro-segregation of 5A90 alloy ingots during the semi-continuous casting process were quantitatively investigated. The ingots of a 5A90 alloy with a diameter 170 mm were produced by the conventional direct chill casting (DCC) process and low-frequency electromagnetic casting (LFEC) with 10 Hz/100 A. The results showed that LFEC can substantially refine the micro-structure and shorten the width of the columnar grain area of an ingot. The refinement effect came with the relieving of grain boundary segregation and an improvement in the macro-segregation of the ingot. Roblitinib mouse Compared with the traditional DCC process, the tensile properties of the aged alloy prepared by the LFEC process were improved due to the effects of the increase in solid solubility and the strengthening of the grain refinement, so that the stability of the tensile properties was also improved. Meanwhile, the rate of yield increased by 2.3% with a decrease in the peeling thickness of the ingot.
