Air pollution has increasingly been recognized as a major healthcare concern. Air pollution, particularly fine particulate matter (≤ 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter [PM2.5]) has demonstrated an increase in adverse cardiovascular events. This study aimed to assess the cardiovascular response to personal exposure to different levels of PM2.5. This prospective cohort study enrolled healthy volunteers aged ≥ 18 years with no cardiovascular disease. Study subjects carried personal exposure monitor of PM2.5, digital thermo-hygrometer for temperature and humidity, 24-h blood pressure monitor, and continuous electrocardiogram monitor. Measurements were repeated twice with an interval of 6-12 months. Statistical models consisted of generalized estimation equations to various repeated measures of each subject. A total of 22 subjects were enrolled in this study between July 2018 and January 2019. Measurement was performed twice in all participants, and a total of 36 data were collected except for insufficient data collection. The mean age of the study population was 41.6 years, and 95% of the subjects were females. No study subjects had hypertension or other cardiovascular diseases. The average systolic blood pressure increased with higher PM2.5 levels with marginal significance (0.22 mmHg [95% confidential intervals - 0.04 to 0.48 mmHg] per 10 μg/m3 of PM2.5). All parameters for heart rate variability significantly decreased with a higher level of PM2.5. In this study, we measured individual personal exposure to PM2.5 by using a portable device. We found that 24-h exposure to high levels of PM2.5 was associated with a significant decrease in heart rate variability, suggesting impaired autonomous nervous function.The Sargasso Sea has long been considered as the only spawning area for Atlantic eels, despite the absence of direct observations. The present study raises a novel scenario, deviating from Schmidt's dogma, begins with a review of historical and recent observations that were combined to build up a global theory on spawning ecology and migration behavior of Atlantic eels. From this, it is argued that a favorable spawning area could be located eastward of Sargasso Sea at the intersection between the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the oceanic fronts. Ocean circulation models combined with 3D particle-tracking method confirmed that spawning at this specific area would result in larval distribution fitting the field observation. This study explores the hypothesis that leptocephali are able to swim and orientate to reach their specific growth areas. It proposes a novel framework about spawning ecology, based on orientation, navigation and meeting cues of silver eels to the spawning area. Together this framework may serve as a stepping-stone for solving the long-lasting mystery of eel reproduction which first came out 2,400 years ago and promotes the understanding of oceanic migration and reproduction of marine organisms.This work presents a non-linear Self-Consistent (SC) micromechanics method to model the observed physical elastic properties of a terrigenous formation with the purpose to obtain its depth mineral volume fractions profile. In this approach, it is first assumed that the observed physical elastic properties obtained from well logs, such as the density [Formula see text] and the elastic compressional [Formula see text] and shear [Formula see text] velocities, are a non-linear relationship of the unknown mineral volume fractions [Formula see text]. Then, a gradient descent algorithm is implemented to seek for those volume fractions [Formula see text] for which differences between modelled and observed physical elastic properties are minimum. It is assumed that quartz, calcite and clay are the main comprising minerals of the formation. Obtained volume fractions profile follow the same general trends to those estimated by implementing the Linear Least-Squares Inversion LLSI method which is widely used in petrophysical analysis to obtain mineral concentrations from density [Formula see text], photoelectric effect [Formula see text] and compressional slowness [Formula see text] well logs. Results also show that calcite and clay volume fractions from these two methods are highly correlated while quartz volume fractions show low correlation. Further comparison between clay concentrations from SC method with clay concentrations calculated from direct measurements of gamma ray GR well logs used as a guideline also exhibits high correlation. These results suggest that the SC method is better suited to obtain clay and calcite volume fractions rather than quartz volume fractions.
