Widespread or ectopic sensitization is a hallmark symptom of chronic pain, characterized by aberrantly enhanced pain sensitivity in multiple body regions remote from the site of original injury or inflammation. The central mechanism underlying widespread sensitization remains unidentified. The central nucleus of the amygdala (also called the central amygdala, CeA) is well situated for this role because it receives nociceptive information from diverse body sites and modulates pain sensitivity in various body regions. In this study, we examined the role of the CeA in a novel model of ectopic sensitization of rats. Injection of formalin into the left upper lip resulted in latent bilateral sensitization in the hind paw lasting >13 days in male Wistar rats. Chemogenetic inhibition of gamma-aminobutyric acid-ergic neurons or blockade of calcitonin gene-related peptide receptors in the right CeA, but not in the left, significantly attenuated this sensitization. Furthermore, chemogenetic excitation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-ergic neurons in the right CeA induced de novo bilateral hind paw sensitization in the rats without inflammation. These results indicate that the CeA neuronal activity determines hind paw tactile sensitivity in rats with remote inflammatory pain. They also suggest that the hind paw sensitization used in a large number of preclinical studies might not be simply a sign of the pain at the site of injury but rather a representation of the augmented CeA activity resulting from inflammation/pain in any part of the body or from activities of other brain regions, which has an active role of promoting defensive/protective behaviors to avoid further bodily damage.

This study aimed to examine the association between serum estradiol levels and number of metaphase II oocytes harvested after in vitro fertilization cycles used in embryo transfers and the subsequent impact on pregnancy rates.

This observational analytical retrospective study was carried out in 2010-2018 at the Angeles del Pedregal Hospital. It included 181 cases and looked into the number of metaphase II oocytes to predict pregnancy rates. Statistical analysis was based on the calculation of correlations between variables and logistic regressions.

Estradiol levels increased with the number of oocytes by a median correlation (r=0.482, p=0.000). On the day of trigger, estradiol levels predicted the number of retrieved oocytes with 23% reliability (R2=0.232, p=0.000); a linear trend correlation of r=0.489, p=0.000 was found between estradiol levels on the day of trigger and number of metaphase II oocytes.

Various studies on Traumatic Dental Injuries (TDI) have been carried out in different small localities and mostly among children and adolescents in Nigeria, but there has not been any national study to determine its prevalence. This national survey was carried out to understand the complexities of dental trauma epidemiology among adult and elderly Nigerians.

A national cross-sectional survey of TDI among adult and elderly Nigerians, following WHO recommendations.

A total of 5,067 adults (35-44 years) and 4,680 elderly (65-74 years) Nigerians were examined, and the prevalence of dental trauma among the adult and elderly was 15.9 % and 22.1%, respectively. Gender comparison showed males were more affected than females in the North (p<0.05), while TDIs occurred more among females in Southern Nigeria (p<0.05). In Nigeria, Type 2 injuries were most prevalent among the adults and elderly (53.9% and 55.7%, respectively). Among the elderly, while Type 1 injuries were more common in the North, Type 2 injuries were more prevalent in Southern Nigeria (p<0.05). Types 3-10 injuries were more prevalent in the South (p<0.05). TDI 1,2 occurred more in the anterior teeth among adults (p<0.05) and in posterior teeth among the elderly, especially in Southern Nigeria (p<0.05); while TDI 3-10 affected mostly the anterior teeth in both age groups (p<0.05.

The observed pattern of dental trauma among the adults and elderly Nigerians could reflect the diverse dietary and socio-cultural practices. Advocacy for prevention of, relevant education on, research into and improvement of access to treatments for dental trauma is recommended.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infects multiple tissues of the body, including the renal parenchyma, with HIV-associated Nephropathy (HIVAN) being the most common form of the HIV-related renal disease and an important cause of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) in HIV infected patients. There is paucity of studies on HIVAN among children with renal diseases, most studies on HIVAN focused on prevalence among HIV patients with vertical transmission being the commonest route. We undertook this study to determine the prevalence and impact of HIVAN among our renal patients and to highlight the new route of HIV transmission observed in these group of patients in Port Harcourt, Southern Nigeria.

The study was conducted among renal patients managed in the Paediatric department of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital from December 2016 to March 2019. The information on the HIVAN patients were stored and retrieved from the renal register where all cases of renal diseases were enrolled. Specimens collected from different provinces of Turkey were studied. In the anatomical studies, investigations were performed on transversal and superficial sections of the leaves. All sections were stained with chloral hydrate and Sartur solution and were then examined using an Olympus BH2 light microscope.

Significant diagnostic characteristics were found, such as trichome types, stomatal measurements, the stomatal index, and the density ratio of the parenchyma and collenchyma layers. Some morphological features of the leaves also showed prominent differences.
