Electroencephalography (EEG) microstates (MSs) are defined as quasi-stable topographies that represent global coherent activation. Alternations in EEG MSs have been reported in numerous neuropsychiatric disorders. Transferring the results of these studies into clinical practice requires not only high reliability but also sufficient individual specificity. Nevertheless, whether the amount of data used in microstate analysis influences reliability and how much individual information is provided by EEG MSs are unclear. In the current study, we aimed to assess the within-subject consistency and between-subject differences in the characteristics of EEG MSs. Two sets of eyes-closed resting-state EEG recordings were collected from 54 young, healthy participants on two consecutive days. The Raven Advanced Progressive Matrices test was conducted to assess general fluid intelligence (gF). We obtained four MSs (labeled A, B, C and D) through EEG microstate analysis. EEG MS characteristics including traditional features (the global explained variances, mean durations, coverages, occurrences and transition probabilities), the Hurst exponents and temporal dynamic features (the autocorrelation functions and the partial autocorrelation functions) were calculated and evaluated. The data with a duration greater than 2 min showed moderate to high reliability and individual specificity. The mean duration and coverage of MS C were significantly correlated with the gF score. The dynamic features showed a higher identification accuracy and were more significantly correlated with gF than the traditional MS features. These findings reveal that EEG microstate characteristics are reliably unique in single subjects and possess abundant inter-individual variability.A smartphone-based detection platform for the determination of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is described. The method is based on the rational design of the stimulus-response of 7-methoxycoumarin-3-carboxylic acid (7-MC-3-COOH)-functionalized Eu-AMP infinite coordination polymer (ICP) nanoparticles. The blue fluorescence of 7-MC-3-COOH at 403 nm was suppressed, while the red fluorescence of Eu3+ at 615 nm was sensitized after the formation of 7-MC-3-COOH@Eu-AMP ICP. Upon exposure to ALP, the dephosphorylation of AMP resulted in the destruction of 7-MC-3-COOH@Eu-AMP ICP, and thereby, the blue fluorescence of 7-MC-3-COOH recovered; in the meantime, the sensitized red fluorescence was quenched. With the fluorescence intensity ratio F615/F430 as the signal readout, ALP can be detected within a concentration range 0.001 to 0.15 U mL-1, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.00035 U mL-1. selleck Moreover, fluorescence color changes from red to blue could also be recognized by a portable device with the smartphone as a signal reader, and direct point-of-use testing (POUT) for ALP within a concentration range 0.005 to 0.7 U mL-1 could be realized, with LOD of 0.0015 U mL-1. Endowed with high sensitivity and superior reliability, the assay enabled direct monitoring of P-related water eutrophication in a freshwater lake with ALP as an indicator. Both micronutrients are often marketed as "antioxidants" in mineral supplements; however, neither selenium nor zinc are antioxidants per se but they may exert beneficial effects as components of enzymes and other proteins that catalyze redox reactions and/or are involved in the maintenance of redox homeostasis. According to epidemiological data older individuals have an increased risk of developing deficiencies in the selenium and zinc status; however, such statistical correlations in epidemiological studies do not imply a causal association. Intervention trials are scarce and have yielded inconsistent and sometimes even adverse results. It should also be noted that the observed deficiencies in micronutrients may not necessarily be attributable to inadequate dietary intake as the absorption and distribution within the body might also be influenced by factors such as medications or interaction with other food ingredients. Thus, any dietary supplementation should be implemented with caution and persons who wish to take mineral supplements should first seek medical advice. This article discusses the role of selenium and zinc in biological antioxidant systems, summarizes findings on the supply and supplementation of aged persons with these trace elements and on the influence they may exert on aging-related health issues, such as cognitive decline and type 2 diabetes mellitus.Chronic pruritus is a symptom of many systemic diseases. In contrast to dermatological pruritus, there are no primary changes in skin appearance. Establishing the correct diagnosis in these cases can be quite challenging. In some instances, laboratory tests can be helpful. This report highlights the importance of specific and target-orientated laboratory tests in four patients with chronic pruritus due to systemic diseases.Antihistamines, mostly H1 antihistamines, administered both topically and systemically, are among the most widely used drugs. While systemically applicable antihistamines are usually taken orally or administered intravenously, while local therapy is used on the eye, nose or skin. Systemic antihistamines are most frequently used during the pollen season (hay fever, asthma) or are used all year round, e.g., for house dust and animal hair allergies. Furthermore, urticaria is a major indication for the use of H1 antihistamines, also as long-term treatment. Although H1 antihistamines are not licensed for pruritus and prurigo, they are frequently used in these diseases. However, since in many diseases with pruritus and prurigo the histamine receptor does not play a decisive role in the pathogenesis of pruritus, they show limited efficacy. Two Cochrane reviews have not shown any significant antipruritic effects of H1 antihistamine treatment in atopic eczema as single therapy or in combination, e.g., with topical glucocorticosteroid therapy.
