Previous studies evaluating the association between TyG index and hypertension risk in general adult population showed inconsistent results. We performed a meta-analysis to systematically evaluate this association. Methods Observational studies, which evaluated the independent association between TyG index and hypertension in the general adult population, were identified by systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Wanfang data, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure databases. A random-effect model, which incorporated the potential intra-study heterogeneity, was used for the meta-analysis. Results Eight observational studies including 200,044 participants were included. Results showed that compared with those with the lowest category of TyG index, subjects with the highest category of TyG index were associated with higher odds of hypertension [adjusted risk ratio (RR) 1.53, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.26-1.85, I 2 = 54%, P 0.05). Conclusions Higher TyG index may be associated with higher odds of hypertension in general adult population. Large-scale prospective cohort studies are needed to validate these findings, and further studies are needed to elucidate the potential pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the association between TyG index and hypertension.Objective The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship of amino acid metabolism with hypertriglyceridemia in diabetic patients under statins free of prior cardiovascular diseases. Methods Two independent cross-sectional hospital based cohorts, i.e., Liaoning Medical University First Affiliated Hospital (LMUFAH, n = 146) and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University (SAHDMU, n = 294) were included in the current analysis. Hypertriglyceridemia was defined as triglyceride ≥1.7 mmol/L, and well-controlled LDL-C was defined as less then 2.6 mmol/L. The adjusted ORs (95% CI) of circulating metabolic measures for hypertriglyceridemia were assessed using logistic regression. Pooled results of metabolites with the same direction of association in both cohorts were combined using inverse variance-weighted fixed-effect meta-analysis. Difference of identified metabolites in patients with and without hypertriglyceridemia were also obtained in the context of LDL-C. Results Patients, 86 and 106, were with hypertriglyceridemia in LMUFAH and SAHDMU, respectively. We observed that elevated alanine, asparagine, leucine, and valine were consistently associated with increased hypertriglyceridemia in both cohorts. In fixed-effect pooled analysis, the OR (95% CI) per SD increase was 1.71 (1.32-2.20) for alanine, 1.62 (1.20-2.19) for asparagine, 1.64 (1.22-2.20) for leucine, and 1.62 (1.22-2.13) for valine (all P values ranged from 0.0018 to less then 0.0001); adjusting for C-peptide attenuated effect sizes of Ala, Leu, and Val for hypertriglyceridemia. The difference were robust in groups with well- or bad-controlled LDL-C. Conclusion Among 23 amino acids, alanine, asparagine, leucine, and valine were positively associated with increased residual risk of hypertriglyceridemia in diabetic patients with statin treatment.Objectives Evidence has shown that angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which can be upregulated after angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEi) and angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) treatment, may play a dual role in the pathogenesis and progression of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). JAK inhibitor We aimed to assess the association between the use of ACEi/ARB and the outcome of COVID-19 patients with preexisting hypertension in non-endemic areas. Methods From January 17, 2020, to February 19, 2020, 286 patients with hypertension were enrolled in this retrospective study out of 1,437 COVID-19 patients from 47 centers in Zhejiang and Jiangsu Province. The composite endpoints consisted of mechanical ventilation, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, or death. Cox proportional hazards analysis was performed to assess the association between ACEi/ARB and clinical outcomes of COVID-19 patients with hypertension. Results In the main analysis, 103 patients receiving ACEi/ARB were compared with 173 patients receiving other regimens. Overall, 44 patients (15.94%) had an endpoint event. The risk probability of crude endpoints in the ACEi/ARB group (12.62%) was lower than that in the non-ACEi/ARB group (17.92%). After adjusting for confounding factors by inverse probability weighting, the results showed that the use of ACEi/ARB reduced the occurrence of end events by 47% [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.53; 95% CI, 0.34-0.83]. Similar results were obtained in multiple sensitivity analyses. Conclusions In this retrospective study, among COVID-19 patients with hypertension, the use of ACEi/ARB is not associated with an increased risk of disease severity compared with patients without ACEi/ARB. The trends of beneficial effects of ACEi/ARB need to be further evaluated in randomized clinical trials.Temperamental traits can decisively influence how children enter into social interaction with their environment. Yet, in the field of child-robot interaction, little is known about how individual differences such as shyness impact on how children interact with social robots in educational settings. The present study systematically assessed the temperament of 28 preschool children aged 4-5 years in order to investigate the role of shyness within a dyadic child-robot interaction. Over the course of four consecutive sessions, we observed how shy compared to nonshy children interacted with a social robot during a word-learning educational setting and how shyness influenced children's learning outcomes. Overall, results suggested that shy children not only interacted differently with a robot compared to nonshy children, but also changed their behavior over the course of the sessions. Critically, shy children interacted less expressively with the robot in general. With regard to children's language learning outcomes, shy children scored lower on an initial posttest, but were able to close this gap on a later test, resulting in all children retrieving the learned words on a similar level.
