Skin prick tests are widely used to diagnose allergic sensitization. The influence of obesity on the skin prick test result has not been clearly established, even though the association between allergic disease and obesity is relatively well known.

To determine whether a change in body mass index (BMI) contributes to skin reactivity to histamine and allergens in a skin prick test, we performed a 2-year follow-up study on Korean children.

Skin prick tests for common aeroallergens were performed on elementary school students from Jeju Island, Korea. BMI was calculated using weight and height after measuring both, and demographic characteristics were surveyed. The same tests were repeated after 2 years.

The sensitization rate increased during the 2 years between tests and the children's mean BMI also increased, along with their age. The wheal sizes induced by

, Japanese cedar, and histamine were significantly increased during 2 years; however, only the histamine reaction associated with increased BMI had statistical significance. Furthermore, other variables-including the number of sensitized allergens-were not related to histamine skin reactivity.

Histamine skin reactivity increased in children over time and some allergens showed increased specific reactions; however, BMI gain is a specific predictor of histamine reactivity. Further studies are needed to elucidate the clinical significance of these changes.

We investigated mycobacterial uptake, intracellular replication, and soluble immune-mediator responses of human bronchoalveolar lavage cells (BALCs) loaded with/without PM, to infection with mycobacterial strains. We observed that only BALCs containing PM display an ex vivo phenotypic profile dominated by spontaneous interleukin (IL)-10 production. PM-loaded BALCs retained the ability to phagocytose both Mycobacterium bovis Bacille Calmette Guérin (BCG) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) ΔleuDΔpanCD at equal efficacy as clear non-PM-loaded BALCs. However, immune responsiveness, such as the production of IL-6 (P = 0.015) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF)-α (P = 0.0172) immediately post M. bovis BCG infection, were dramatically lower in black BALCs loaded with PM versus clear non-PM-loaded BALCs. By 24 h post infection, differential immune responses to M. bovis BCG between black versus clear BALC waned, and instead, production of IL-6 (P = 0.03) and IL-1α (P = 0.04) by black BALCs was lower versus clear BALCs following M.tb ΔleuDΔpanCD infection. Considering that TNF-α and IL-6 are characterized as critical to host protection against mycobacteria, our findings suggest that BALCs loaded with inhaled PM, display lower levels of antimycobacterial mediators and that the response magnitude differs according to infective mycobacterial strain. Even though this did not translate into altered mycobacterial killing at early time points post infection, the long-term impact of such changes remains to be established.Chronic diseases constitute a significant threat to health. Worldwide, medication adherence in chronic diseases remains unsatisfactory. Understanding factors affecting adherence is essential. This study examined medication adherence by characteristics of patients with chronic diseases. This cross-sectional study included 800 patients. The Adherence to Chronic Diseases Scale was used to measure adherence. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression was used to examine factors influencing medication adherence. Low adherence was found in 19.5% of the patients, 45% had medium adherence, and 35.5% had high adherence. Logistic regression showed that retired (OR 0.496, 95% CI [0.33-0.75]), having COPD (OR 0.460, 95% CI [0.32-0.67]) and duration of disease ≤5 years (OR 1.554, 95% CI [1.11-2.17]) remain independent predictors for high adherence. Mixed findings regarding the relationship between medication adherence and patients' characteristics were noticed. Patients' characteristics should be examined with the individual population when examining and attempting to improve medication adherence in clinical practice.1. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a vital role in the proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis of myoblasts. However, the effect of miR-7 on the apoptosis of chicken primary myoblasts (CPMs) and its mechanism is still unclear.2. In this study, the expression of apoptosis marker genes (RAF1, Caspase3, Caspase9, Cytc, Fas) in CPMs was significantly increased after transfection of miR-7 mimic. The expression of the apoptosis marker genes in CPMs was significantly reduced after transfection with miR-7 inhibitor. Flow cytometry showed that the late apoptosis rate of the mimic group was significantly higher than the negative control (NC). The viable cells of the mimic group were significantly lower than the NC. In contrast, inhibition of miR-7 had the opposite effect.3. The dual-luciferase assay showed that the KLF4 was a target gene of miR-7. The rescue experiment showed that the KLF4 gene could attenuate the effect of miR-7 on the expression of apoptosis marker genes in CPMs.4. Determination of the function the KLF4 gene showed that the expression of the apoptosis marker genes in CPMs decreased significantly compared with the NC after its overexpression. Inhibition of KLF4 gene had the opposite effect. Flow cytometry showed that overexpression of the KLF4 gene inhibited early apoptosis of myoblasts (P ≤ 0.01), while interference with the KLF4 gene could promote early apoptosis of myoblasts (P ≤ 0.001).5. The results demonstrated, for the first time, that miR-7 promotes apoptosis in chicken primary myoblasts by regulating the expression of the KLF4 gene. This study examined associations between four indicators of social determinants of health (SDOH; parent education, poverty, material hardships, and child health problems), chronic school absence, and teachers' ratings of parents' engagement in their children's education. Proteasome inhibitor Surveys were collected from 304 parents and 26 teachers from eight Baltimore City Public Schools. Results revealed that teachers' ratings of parent engagement were consistently lower among families experiencing adverse SDOH and/or whose children were chronically absent; however, there was no significant relationship between teachers' ratings of parent engagement and child health problems. Additionally, chronic absence partially mediated the relationship between three SDOH indicators (total material hardships, parent education level, and child health problems) and teacher-rated parent engagement. Poverty was excluded from mediation analysis due to evidence of multicollinearity suppressive effects. Addressing the SDOH assessed in this study may be an effective strategy to reduce chronic absence, promote parent engagement, and foster equity in education. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was performed to summarize the effects of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics on insulin resistance (IR), lipid profiles, anthropometric indices, and C-reactive protein (CRP) level for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We searched 8 databases from their inception until 1st October, 2020. The effect sizes were expressed as standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Subgroup analyses were undertaken for further identification of effects of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics, based on the following aspects (1) type of intervention (probiotics, prebiotics, or synbiotics); (2) study duration (≥ 12 weeks or less then 12 weeks); (3) number of probiotic strains (multi strains or single strain); (4) probiotic dose (≥ 2 × 108 colony-forming units [CFU] or less then 2 × 108 CFU). A total of 17 eligible RCTs with 1049 participants were included. Results showed that probiotic, prebiotic, and synbiotic intake decreased fastis demonstrates that probiotic, prebiotic, or synbiotic administration is an effective and safe intervention for modifying IR and lipid profiles.Although researchers have debated whether a core deficit of nonsymbolic representation of magnitude underlies developmental dyscalculia (DD), research has mostly focused on numerosity processing. We probed the possibility of a general magnitude deficit in individuals with DD and asked whether sensitivity to size varied in contexts of depth ordering and size constancy. We measured full psychometric functions in size-discrimination tasks in 12 participants with DD and 13 control participants. Results showed that although people with DD exhibited veridical perceived magnitude, their sensitivity to size was clearly impaired. In contrast, when objects were embedded in depth cues allowing size-constancy computations, participants with DD demonstrated typical sensitivity to size. These results demonstrate a deficit in the perceptual resolutions of magnitude in DD. At the same time, the finding of an intact size constancy suggests that when magnitude perception is facilitated by implicit mandatory computations of size constancy, this deficit is no longer evident.Suicide is a public health issue that impacts a nation's resident and non-resident populations alike. Singapore has one of the largest non-resident (work permit holder) populations in the world, yet very little attention has been given to examining suicide in this population. The current study examined the case materials of all 303 non-resident completed suicides in Singapore in the period January 2011 to December 2014. Their basic profiles were compared with that of the 1,507 resident cases in the same period. A sample of 30 death notes written by non-residents were randomly selected and thematically analyzed to supplement the descriptive findings and discussion. Results showed that suicides were highest among males, those aged 21-35 years old, and South Asians. Most non-resident suicide cases did not have known physical or mental health issues, prior suicide attempts, or suicide notes. Suicide decedents from South Asia and Europe most frequently used hanging, while jumping was most common among decedents from other regions. Relationship and health problems emerged as the top two suspected triggers for suicide based on our analysis of the suicide notes. The unique situation of working abroad may increase non-residents' vulnerability in general, while adverse life events such as relationship and health issues may be too overwhelming to bear, especially when support services are not readily available and accessible. The results have implications for suicide prevention among this neglected group of people who choose to work in foreign lands. The dynamic changes in uterine contractility in response to distension are incompletely understood. Rhythmic, propagating contractions of nonpregnant uterine smooth muscle occur in the absence of nerve activity (i.e., myogenic), events that decline during pregnancy and reemerge at parturition. We therefore sought to determine how myogenic contractions of the nonpregnant uterus are affected by distension, which might provide mechanistic clues underlying distension-associated uterine conditions such as preterm birth. Uteri isolated from nulliparous adult female mice in proestrus were video imaged to generate spatiotemporal maps, and myoelectrical activity simultaneously recorded using extracellular suction electrodes. Motility patterns were examined under basal conditions and following ramped intraluminal distension with fluid to 5 and 10 cmH2O. Intraluminal distension caused pressure-dependent changes in the frequency, amplitude, propagation speed, and directionality of uterine contractions, which reversed upon pressure release.
