Postoperative radiotherapy (RT) is an established treatment for prostate cancer (PC). Though hypofractionation is commonly used for radical treatments, open issues still remain in the postoperative setting due to the lack of long-term data. Aim of this study was to evaluate long-term results of postoperative moderately hypofractionated RT (MHRT).

We conducted aretrospective analysis including PC patients treated with prostatectomy and postoperative MHRT delivered with volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). Endpoints of the analysis included biochemical relapse-free survival (BRFS), distant metastases free-survival (DMFS), overall survival (OS), and pattern of acute and late toxicity.

181patients were included. Pathological stage was classified as pT3a in 33.6% and pT3b in 30%. Median PSA value before RT was 0.23 ng/ml and median RT total dose was 70 Gy (65-74.2 Gy) in 25/28fractions. With amedian follow-up of 54.5months, rates of BRFS at 3 and 5years were 80.7 and 72.3%. ISUP grade group (HR 1.44, p = 0.015), pathological Tstage (HR 2.03; p = 0.009), and pre-RT PSA >0.2 ng/ml (HR 2.64; p = 0.015) were correlated with BRFS. Three and 5‑year DMFS were 87.4 and 80.8%. ISUP grade group (HR 1.50; p = 0.011) and pre-RT PSA (HR 5.34; p = 0.001) were correlated with DMFS. Five (2.7%) and 3 (1.6%) patients reported late grade 3GU and GI toxicity, respectively.

Our results confirm the long-term safety and efficacy of postoperative MHRT for PC.

Intermittent hypoxia in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) resembles ischemia/reperfusion. Oxidative stress during ischemia/reperfusion increases matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) activity and leads to adverse cardiovascular consequences in animal models, but there is scarce information about MMP-2 in humans with OSA. The aim of this study was to determine if serum MMP-2 levels of patients with OSA differ from controls and if MMP-2 activity correlates with the severity of OSA andlevel of hypoxemia.

Patientswith OSA (n = 124) were recruited from the Sleep Disorders Center (Saskatoon City Hospital, Canada) after in-lab polysomnography (PSG). Controls (n = 26) were subjects referred for PSG who did not have OSA. Severity of OSA was categorized according to American Academy of Sleep Medicine criteria. Level of hypoxemia was expressed as oxygen desaturation index (ODI; 3% desaturation). Gelatin zymography was performed to measure serum MMP-2 activity.

Serum MMP-2 activity was significantly higher inpatients with OSA than in controls (p = 0.029). MMP-2 activity in patients with severe OSA was significantly higher than in those with mild/moderate OSA and controls (p = 0.002). Linear regression showed positive associations with MMP-2 activity in serum for AHI (p < 0.001) and ODI (p = 0.003). The associations persisted after adjustment for multiple confounders, including age, sex, BMI, and cardiovascular disease.

However, we might overlook the accumulating genetic variation in those dryland micro-populations, which should eventually increase the dryland biodiversity. In the xeric steppes of western and northwestern China, there are two soil surface-dwelling and genetically close cyanobacterial species, Nostoc commune and Nostoc flagelliforme. They respectively exhibit lamellate and filamentous colony shapes. Their individual colony is consisted of hundreds of trichomes and the common exopolysaccharide matrix. N. flagelliforme is exclusively distributed in the dryland and supposed to be evolved from N. commune. We previously reported that the morphological diversity of N. flagelliforme colonies was very limited, being either cylindrical or strip-like. In this communication, we performed single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis of the marker gene wspA as well as phylogenetic analysis of the WspA protein in N. flagelliforme colonies to gain insights into its genetic diversity. SNP analysis suggested that there existed plentiful nucleotide variations in the individual colonies and meanwhile these variations shared certain evolutionary regularity. Phylogenetic analysis of the deduced proteins from the cloned wspA sequences suggested that the relatively regular variations were possibly dispersed in the N. flagelliforme populations of different regions. Thus, these results presented a scenario of the underestimated genetic diversity hidden behind the limited morphotype of dryland cyanobacteria. Maybe, we can consider the individual cyanobacterial colony as a potential biodiversity pool in the drylands.
