Glioblastomas (GBM) are the most frequent and aggressive primary tumor of the central nervous system. In recent years, it has been proposed that sex hormones such as progesterone play an essential role in GBM biology. Membrane progesterone receptors (mPRs) are a group of G protein-coupled receptors with a wide distribution and multiple functions in the organism. There are five mPRs subtypes described in humans mPRα, mPRβ, mPRγ, mPRδ, and mPRε. It has been reported that human-derived GBM cells express the mPRα, mPRβ, and mPRγ subtypes, and that progesterone promotes GBM progression in part by mPRα specific activation; however, it is still unknown if mPRδ and mPRε are also expressed in this type of tumor cells. In this study, we characterized the expression and hormonal regulation of mPRδ and mPRε in human GBM cells. We also analyzed a set of biopsies from TCGA. We found that the expression of these receptors is dependent on the tumor's grade and that mPRδ expression is directly correlated to patients' survival while the opposite is observed for mPRε. By RT-qPCR, Western blot, and immunofluorescence, the expression of mPRδ and mPRε was detected for the first time in human GBM cells. An in silico analysis showed possible progesterone response elements in the promoter regions of mPRδ and mPRε, and progesterone treatments downregulated the expression of these receptors. Our results suggest that mPRδ and mPRε are expressed in human GBM cells and that they are relevant to GBM biology. In the brackish water Baltic Sea, oil pollution is an ever-present and significant environmental threat mainly due to the continuously increasing volume of oil transport in the area. In this study, effects of exposure to crude oil on two common Baltic Sea species, the mussel Mytilus trossulus and the amphipod Gammarus oceanicus, were investigated. The species were exposed for various time periods (M. trossulus 4, 7, and 14 days, G. oceanicus 4 and 11 days) to three oil concentrations (0.003, 0.04, and 0.30 mg L-1 based on water measurements, nominally aimed at 0.015, 0.120, and 0.750 mg L-1) obtained by mechanical dispersion (oil droplets). Biological effects of oil exposure were examined using a battery of biomarkers consisting of enzymes of the antioxidant defense system (ADS), lipid peroxidation, phase II detoxification (glutathione S-transferase), neurotoxicity (acetylcholinesterase inhibition), and geno- and cytotoxicity (micronuclei and other nuclear deformities). In mussels, the results on biomarker responses were examined in connection with data on the tissue accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). In M. trossulus, during the first 4 days of exposure the accumulation of all PAHs in the two highest exposure concentrations was high and was thereafter reduced significantly. Significant increase in ADS responses was observed in M. trossulus at 4 and 7 days of exposure. At day 14, significantly elevated levels of geno- and cytotoxicity were detected in mussels. In G. oceanicus, the ADS responses followed a similar pattern to those recorded in M. trossulus at day 4; however, in G. oceanicus, the elevated ADS response was still maintained at day 11. Conclusively, the results obtained show marked biomarker responses in both study species under conceivable, environmentally realistic oil-in-seawater concentrations during an oil spill, and in mussels, they are related to the observed tissue accumulation of oil-derived compounds. This paper aims to give a condensed introduction to the general mechanisms for policy-making on environmental remediation at the post-closure US contaminated nuclear sites, the accomplishment of "Clean Closure," and the process of setting the goal "Closure in Place." The researches were conducted in three perspectives including overall guidelines, principles of corrective actions, and implementation of practical measures. The results indicated that the round of environmental restoration policies at the post-closure US contaminated nuclear test sites were comprehensive. It was supported by the visions and principles of differentiated and classified governance, demand-driven approach, highlights, unified planning, and progressive implementation in all directions. Meanwhile, it elaborates the diverse policy-making related issues of environmental governance at the polluted US nuclear sites upon closure and presents the preliminary analysis on them respectively to demonstrate valuable reference for the similar researches on the environmental governance of the contaminated nuclear areas as expected. The carbon sequestration capacity of the forest ecosystem normally increases overage due to the carbon dynamic in below canopy and soil. The carbon dynamic is reflective of the forest characteristics and their interactions with climate, topographic, and soil conditions. In this study, we measured the carbon content and carbon density of canopy, shrub, understory vegetation, litter, and soil, and assessed carbon dynamics in three forest ecosystems (Cunninghamia lanceolate, Pinus massoniana, and Evergreen broad-leaved forests) with a combination of data from Fujian Provincial forest resource inventory. This study showed that the carbon content of the canopy layers increased over time, and the carbon content of the topsoil (0-30 cm) in the young forests was significantly higher than that in other age groups in Cunninghamia lanceolata forest and Pinus massoniana forest. Due to the carbon differences in the soil layer, the carbon stocks of the C. lanceolata forest and the P. massoniana forest declined from 1996 to 2007, but the carbon stocks of Evergreen broad-leaved forest increased. Besides, using the traditional carbon content coefficient (0.5) might underestimate the carbon sequestration potential of these forest ecosystems, especially for the mature forests. The coniferous forests displayed a short-term reduction in the carbon stocks of ecosystems between 10 and 20 years after afforestation, and the decline cannot be ignored in the carbon budget. The scarcity of freshwater causes the necessity for water delineation of brackish water. Reverse osmosis (RO) is one of the popular strategies characterized with lower cost and simple processing procedure compared to the other desalination techniques. The current research is conducted to investigate the efficiency the RO process based on one-week advance prediction of total dissolved solids (TDS) and permeate flow rate for Sistan and Bluchistan provinces located in Iran region. The water parameters including pH, feed pressure temperature, and conductivity are used to construct the prediction matrix. A newly hybrid data-intelligence (DI) model called multilayer perceptron hybridized with particle swarm optimization (MLP-PSO) is developed for the investigation. The potential of the proposed MLP-PSO model is validated against two predominate DI models including support vector machine (SVM) and M5Tree (M5T) models. The results evidenced the potential of the proposed MLP-PSO model over the SVM and M5T models in predicting the TDS and permeate flow rate. In addition, the proposed model attained lower uncertainty for the simulated data. Overall, the feasibility of the hybridized MLP-PSO achieved remarkable predictability for the RO process. With the rapid development of social economy and the increasing environmental pollution in China, the government's environmental investment has been gradually increasing, and an effective evaluation system is required to study the benefits from environmental investment. Based on the literature review and current situation analysis of the benefits from environmental investment, the selection of indicators was determined after the analysis of the economic, environmental, and social benefits of environmental investment. The gray relation analysis (GRA) method was adopted to test the correlation between each indicator and environmental investment, the combination of analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and Delphi method was used to determine the relative weight of each indicator, and a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model was established for benefits from environmental investment. The study found that benefits from environmental investment in China had been improving over years but still not satisfying, and several suggestions had been proposed according to the analysis.Although it is still a great challenge, developing oil-/water-separating membranes that combine the advantages of high separation efficiency, salty environments tolerance, and fouling resistance are highly demanded for marine oil spill cleanups and oil-/gas-produced water treatment. Here, we report a new type of all-inorganic nanostructured membrane, which is composed of titanate nanofibers and SiO2 particulate gel for efficient and stable oil/saltwater separation. The nanoporous and interconnected network structure constructed with titanate nanofibers is the key to ensure the high separation efficiency and high water flux of the new membrane. The SiO2 gel is used as a binder to offer mechanical flexibility and integrity for this type of all-inorganic membrane. The new membrane displays a high oil/water separation efficiency of above 99.5% with oil content in treated effluent lower than US environmental discharge standards (42 ppm) and high water permeation flux of 1600 LMH/bar under low operation pressure. The new membrane also demonstrates outstanding durability in the environment of different salinities, and it has a good resistance for oil fouling due to its excellent underwater superoleophobicity with an oil contact angle above 150 °. Most importantly, the underwater superoleophobic properties can be well maintained after being repeatedly reused. The excellent environmental durability, oil-fouling resistance, high separation efficiency, and facile fabrication process for this new type of membrane render great potential for industrial application in treating produced water. With its major influences on economic growth, energy consumption, and environmental quality, the iron and steel (IS) industry plays an important role in achieving green growth of the national economy. It is also the main air pollutant emitter compared with other industries. Therefore, this study first investigates the influencing factors of air pollutant emissions of the IS industry from dimensions of environmental regulation effect, pollutant generation intensity effect, energy structure effect, technological progress effect, and scale effect using the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) method. Additionally, decoupling effort values are further calculated to obtain the efforts made in different historical stages to achieve decoupling between the growth of the IS industry and its pollutant emissions. Three main conclusions can be summarized based on the empirical analysis of China's IS industry from 2005 to 2015. First, environmental regulation plays a decisive role in mitigating air pollution in the IS industry. Second, environmental regulation and technological progress both exert inhibitory effects on air pollutant emissions, whereas the intensity effect of pollutant generation and scale effect promote emissions to some extent. The role of energy structural effect is unstable, yet the cumulative effect analysis shows that the effect exerts greater impacts on emission reduction during the recent period. Third, decoupling efforts of the industry gradually changed from weak to strong. In specific, the effects of environmental regulation and technological progress both promote decoupling. Conclusions are made, and suggestions are highlighted based on the research findings.
