Transient focal neurological episodes (TFNEs) are a frequently overlooked presentation of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), a condition with prognostic implications that are still not well described.

A computational model of RPE loss was created in Python 3.7, which constructed an array of RPE cells clusters, binarized as either live or atrophic. Two rules were applied to this model the background effect gave each cell a chance of dying defined by a background function, and the neighbor effect increased the chance of RPE cell death if a neighbor were dead. The known anatomic distribution of rods, RPE, choriocapillaris density, amacrine, ganglion, and cone cells were derived from the literature and applied to this model. Atrophy growth rates were measured over arbitrary time units and fit to the known exponential decay model. The main outcome measures included topography of atrophy over time and fit of simulated residual RPE area to exponential decay.

A background effect alone can simulate exponential decay, but does not simulate the central island preservation seen in choroideremia. An additive neighbor effect alone does not simulate exponential decay. When the neighbor effect multiplies the background effect using the rod density function, our model follows an exponential decay, similar to previous observations. The genomic alterations contributing to the pathogenesis of conjunctival squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) and their precursor lesions are poorly understood and hamper our ability to develop molecular therapies to reduce the recurrence rates and treatment-related morbidities of this disease. We aimed to characterize the somatic DNA alterations in human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive and HPV-negative conjunctival SCC.

Patients diagnosed with conjunctival SCC in situ or SCC treated in ocular oncology referral centers in Denmark were included. HPV detection (HPV DNA PCR, p16 immunohistochemistry, and mRNA in situ hybridization) and targeted capture-based next-generation sequencing of 523 genes frequently involved in cancer were performed to describe the mutational profile based on HPV status.

Tumor tissue was available in 33 cases (n = 8 conjunctival SCCs in situ, n = 25 conjunctival SCCs), constituting 25 male and 8 female patients. Nine cases were HPV positive. The HPV-positive SCCs in situ and SCCs were characterized by transcriptionally active high-risk HPV (types 16 and 39) within the tumor cells, frequent mutations in PIK3CA (n = 5/9), and wild-type TP53, CDKN2A, and RB1, while the HPV-negative counterparts harbored frequent mutations in TP53 (n = 21/24), CDKN2A (n = 7/24), and RB1 (n = 6/24).

We sought to characterize neural motion processing deficits in children with cerebral visual impairment (CVI) who have good visual acuity using an objective, quantifiable method (steady-state visual evoked potentials [SSVEPs]).

We recorded SSVEPs in response to three types of visual motion - absolute motion and more complex relative and rotary motion, comparing them to form-related vernier and contour responses. We studied a group of 31 children with CVI diagnosed via detailed clinical examinations and 28 age-matched healthy controls.

Using measurements made at the appropriate response harmonics of the stimulation frequency, we found significant deficits in cerebral processing of relative and rotary motion but not of absolute motion in children with CVI compared with healthy controls. Vernier acuity, in keeping with good recognition acuity in both groups, was not different, nor were contour-related form responses.

Deficits for complex motion but relative sparing of elementary motion and form-related signals suggests preferential damage to extra-striate visual motion areas in children with CVI. The fact that these preferential losses occur in the absence of significant acuity loss indicates that they are not secondary to reduced visual acuity, but rather are an independent vulnerability in CVI. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of dyslipidaemia in adults in Nigeria.

Using the WHO criteria, we determined dyslipidaemia using serum lipid levels of 3 211 adult Nigerians, aged at least 18 years, obtained between March 2017 and February 2018 from two communities (rural and urban) in a state from each of the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

The overall prevalence of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (l-HDL), elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (e-LDL), hypertriglyceridaemia (h-TG) and hypercholesterolaemia (h-CHL) were 72.5,13.6, 21.4 and 7.5%, respectively.
