The effect of electricity, induced by external resistance, on microbial community performance is investigated in Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) involved in simultaneous biotransformation of sulfide and nitrate. In the experiment, three MFCs were operated under different external resistances (100 Ω, 1000 Ω and 10,000 Ω), while one MFC was operated with open circuit as control. All MFCs demonstrate good capacity for simultaneous sulfide and nitrate biotransformation regardless of external resistance. MFCs present similar voltage profile; however, the output voltage has positive relationship with external resistance, and the MFC1 with lowest external resistance (100 Ω) generated highest power density. High-throughput sequencing confirms that taxonomic distribution of suspended sludge in anode chamber encompass phylum level to genus level, while the results of principal component analysis (PCA) suggest that microbial communities are varied with external resistance, which external resistance caused the change of electricity generation and substrate removal at the same, and then leads to the change of microbial communities. However, based on Pearson correlation analyses, no strong correlation is evident between community diversity indices (ACE index, Chao index, Shannon index and Simpson index) and the electricity (final voltage and current density). It is inferred that the performance of electricity did not significantly affect the diversity of microbial communities in MFCs biotransforming sulfide and nitrate simultaneously.

Amygdalar metabolic activity was assessed in 563 patients who underwent multimodality imaging by
F-fluorodeoxyglucose (
F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography and echocardiography for the evaluation of cardiac function.
After exclusion of 294 patients with structural or functional cardiovascular pathologies, 269 patients (128 women) remained in the final population.
F-FDG amygdalar activity significantly decreased with age in men (r = - 0.278, P = 0.001), but not in women (r = 0.002, P = 0.983). Similarly, dichotomous analysis confirmed a lower amygdalar activity in men ≥ 50 years as compared to those < 50 years of age (0.79 ± 0.1 vs. 0.84 ± 0.1, P = 0.007), which was not observed in women (0.81 ± 0.1 vs. 0.82 ± 0.1, P = 0.549). Accordingly, a fully adjusted linear regression analysis identified age as an independent predictor of amygdalar activity only in men (B-coefficient - 0.278, P = 0.001).

The use of amygdalar activity for cardiovascular risk stratification merits consideration of inherent age- and sex-dependent variability.This systematic review aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of Iodine123 Metaiodobenzylguanidine (123I-mIBG) SPECT myocardial imaging in patients with heart failure (HF) and to assess whether semi-quantitative SPECT scores can be useful for accurate risk stratification concerning arrhythmic event (AE) and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in this cohort. A systematic literature search of studies published until November 2020 regarding the application of 123I-mIBG SPECT in HF patients was performed, in Pubmed, Scopus, Medline, Central (Cochrane Library) and Web Of Science databases, including the words "MIBG", "metaiodobenzylguanidine", "heart", "spect", and "tomographic". The included studies had to correlate 123I-mIBG SPECT scores with endpoints such as overall survival and prevention of AE and SCD in HF patients. According to the sixteen studies included, the analysis showed that 123I-mIBG SPECT scores, such as summed defect score (SDS), regional wash-out (rWO), and regional myocardial tracer uptake, could have a reliable prognostic value in patients with HF. An increased SDS or rWO, as well as a reduced 123I-mIBG myocardial uptake, have proven to be effective in predicting AE- and SCD-specific risk in HF patients. Despite achieved results being promising, a more reproducible standardized method for semi-quantitative analysis and further studies with larger cohort are needed for 123I-mIBG SPECT myocardial imaging to be as reliable and, thus, accepted as the conventional 123I-mIBG planar myocardial imaging.

We aimed to investigate the effectiveness of lockdown on SARS-CoV-2 epidemic progression in nine different countries (New Zealand, France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, the UK, Sweden, and the USA).

These results indicate that cystic echinococcosis must be considered for differential diagnosis of felines with abdominal distension and/or observation of vesicles through ultrasound, from endemic areas. Even though cats and dogs are carnivores, differences in digestive physiology and immunological characteristics between them could allow the development of larval or adult worm parasites. Domestic cats with cystic echinococcosis show to be environmentally infected with E. granulosus s. s./G1 eggs.
