The properties of S. cerevisiae chitosan are compared with moldy onion chitosan and shrimp chitosan extracted from shrimp shells. Chitosan extracted from S. cerevisiae is tested for antimicrobial efficacy against Staphylococcus Aureus. The maximum yields of fungal chitosan are 20.85 ± 0.35 mg/g dry S. cerevisiae biomass at 4th day using a culture broth containing sodium acetate, and 16.15 ± 0.95 mg/g dry A. niger biomass at 12th day. After the World Health Organization (WHO) announcing about global pandemic of COVID-19 in March 2020 and relocation of health care resources for controlling this infection, cancer screening programs especially colorectal cancer (CRC) have been suspended in many countries. According to GLOBOCAN 2020 data, CRC is the third prevalent and second deadliest cancer in the world. So, early detection through screening is essential to reduce the mortality associated with this cancer. The present study was designed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on colorectal cancer screening.

Pretherapy serum neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR) have been shown to predict prognosis in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, the published literature is conflicting; hence, we aimed to evaluate their role in predicting survival outcomes in operated patients of PDAC.

A retrospective analysis was performed in all operated cases of PDAC who underwent curative resection between 2011 and 2018. The pretherapy NLR, PLR, and LMR were calculated and analyzed with respect to pathological and survival outcomes RESULTS One hundred thirty-four operated patients were included. The median overall survival for NLR of less than 2, 2.7, and 5 was 30.8, 27.2, and 27.5months and for NLR of more than 2, 2.7, and 5 was 22.9, 21.6, and 21.5months, respectively, and was statistically insignificant (p-value-0.32, 0.91, 0.34, respectively). Similarly, the PLR was not significant for a cutoff of 150 (p-value-0.27), and LMR was not significant for a cutoff of 2.8 (p-value-0.13) and 4.8 (p-value-0.11). On univariate analysis age, CA 19-9levels, perineural invasion, margin positivity, lymph node positivity, and TNM stage were found to have a significant correlation with overall survival. However, on multivariate analysis, only TNM stage was found to be significant.

We hypothesized a relation of neuropeptides such as neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) and growth-associated protein-43 (GAP-43) as well as zinc and the oxidant/antioxidant system with pediatric FS. The study included 100 infants categorized into 50 infants with FS and 50 febrile infants without seizures as controls. Clinical assessments, biochemical assays of NT-3 and GAP-43 using ELISA assay kits, and colorimetric measurements of TAC and Zn were performed to all participants. Overall, significant rises of the values of NT-3 and insignificant increases of GAP-43 were detected in children with FS. At the same time, zinc values and the total antioxidant capacity in serum samples were found to be decreased significantly. In addition, a negative correlation was estimated between NT-3 and zinc levels. Serum NT-3 in diagnosing febrile seizures at cutoff point > 49.62 ng/L showed 100% sensitivity, 46% specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) = 48.1%, and negative predictive value (NPP) = 100% with AUC = 0.678. Significant altered circulating NT-3 and zinc levels in FS may indicate their possible role in the pathogenesis of FS.
