48, p = 0.0036), men (χ2 = 17.1, p less then 0.0001), and current and former smokers (χ2 = 19.2, p less then 0.0001). Notably, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation-positive lung cancer patients with high PAK1 expression showed higher mortality rates than those with low PAK1 expression (91.3% vs. 62.5%, p = 0.02). Therefore, PAK1 overexpression could serve as a molecular target for the treatment of EGFR mutation-positive lung cancer, especially among male patients and current/former smokers.

Gender medicine permeates all sectors of medicine, from prevention to treatment and rehabilitation; it aims to customize the care path, ensuring equity in the access to health care system services. It is unclear to what extent physiotherapists' treatment choices align with gender medicine principles. The aim of this survey is to detect the need of Italian physiotherapists to deepen knowledge in gender medicine.

An 18-item survey assessed the characteristics of responders about knowledge of gender medicine. An online survey was performed in 2020 using SurveyMonkey Software. Data were analyzed by statistical regression.

A total of 617 physiotherapists voluntarily participated in the study (53.84% of the target population). The majority of responders (68.4%) declared having general information about gender medicine, but 55.43% of them claimed to have heard of it but did not know properly what gender medicine was about; 92.38% of the physiotherapists believed that they needed training to acquire knowledge in gender medicine.

Gender equity matters for health. Moderate knowledge of gender medicine' principles and modest application of these findings were used in clinical practice of physiotherapy. Physiotherapists declared that they need training in gender medicine.

The material composition and the final properties of the copolymers can be easily tailored by controlling the monomers ANI/APPA molar feed ratio. An important influence on the reactivity of monomers has been found with the substituent position in the ring, leading to differences in the properties and size of blocks of each monomer in the polymer. As expected, while 2APPA shows more similarities to ANI, 4APPA is much less reactive. Phosphorus loading of ~5 at% was achieved in the poly(aniline-co-2-aminophenylphosphonic acid) (PANI2APPA) with a 50/50 molar feed ratio. All the resulting copolymers were characterized by different techniques. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) computational calculations suggest that the presence of phosphonic groups in the polymeric chain gives rise to inter- and intra-chain interactions, as well as important steric effects, which induce a slight twist in the substituted PANI structure. Therefore, the physicochemical, electrical, and electrochemical properties are modified and can be suitably controlled. This work presents carbon fabric reinforced aluminosilicate matrix composites with content of boric acid, where boron replaces aluminum ions in the matrix and can increase the mechanical properties of composites. Five different amounts of boric acid were added to the alkaline activator for preparing six types (including alkaline activator without boric acid) of composites by the prepreg method. The influence of boric acid content in the matrix on the tensile strength, Young's modulus and interlaminar strength of composites was studied. Attention was also paid to the influence of boron content on the behavior of the matrix and on the internal structure of composites, which was monitored using a scanning electron microscope. The advantage of the aluminosilicate matrix is its resistance to high temperatures; therefore, tests were also performed on samples affected by temperatures of 400-800 °C. The interlaminar strength obtained by short-beam test were measured on samples exposed to 500 °C either hot (i.e. measured at 500 °C) or cooled down to room temperature. The results showed that the addition of boron to the aluminosilicate matrix of the prepared composites did not have any significant effect on their mechanical properties. The presence of boron affected the brittleness and swelling of the matrix and the differences in mechanical properties were evident in samples exposed to temperatures above 500 °C. All six prepared composites showed tensile strength higher than 320 MPa at laboratory temperature. The boron-free composite had the highest strength 385 MPa. All samples showed a tensile strength higher than 230 MPa at elevated temperatures up to 500 °C.Extensive burns result in a local wound response and distant-organ injury (DOI) caused by oxidative-stress and inflammation. Melatonin (MT) shows promise in alleviating oxidative-stress and inflammation, but its role in thermal injury is largely unexplored. The present systematic review and meta-analysis were designed to assess the effects of MT on oxidative-stress and inflammatory markers against severe burn-induced DOI. Mean difference (MD)/standard mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated using fixed-effect/random-effects models. Eighteen experimental studies met the inclusion criteria. Compared with the control group, MT significantly decreased the levels of malondialdehyde (SMD, -1.03; 95% CI, -1.30, -0.76, p less then 0.00001) and 4-hydroxynonenal (MD, -1.06; 95% CI, -1.57, -0.56, p less then 0.0001). Additionally, MT increased the levels of glutathione (SMD, 1.94; 95% CI, 1.27, 2.61, p less then 0.00001) and superoxide-dismutase (SMD, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.08, 1.45, p = 0.03). Finally, MT significantly decreased the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (SMD, -1.34; 95% CI, -1.92 to -0.77; p less then 0.00001) and C-reactive protein (MD, -12.67; 95% CI, -16.72 to -8.62; p less then 0.00001). Meta-analysis indicates that severe burn followed by immediate MT (10 mg/kg) intervention shows significant beneficial effects after 24-h against DOI by regulating oxidative-stress and the inflammatory response.Carrageenan-based active packaging film was prepared by adding olive leaf extract (OLE) as a bioactive agent to the lamb meat packaging. The OLE was characterized in terms of its phenolic compounds (T.ph), antioxidant activity (AA), oleuropein, and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Escherichia coli. Semagacestat The film's formulation consisted of carrageenan, glycerol as a plasticizer, water as a solvent, and OLE. The effects of the OLE on the thickness, water vapor permeability (WVP), tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (EB), elastic modulus (EM), color, solubility, and antimicrobial capacity of the carrageenan film were determined. The OLE had the following excellent characteristics the T.ph value was 115.96 mgGAE∙g-1 (d.b), the AA was 89.52%, the oleuropein value was 11.59 mg∙g-1, and the MIC was 50 mg∙mL-1. The results showed that the addition of OLE increased the thickness, EB, and WVP, and decreased the TS and EM of the film. The solubility was not significantly affected by the OLE. The color difference with the addition of OLE was 64.72%, which had the benefit of being a barrier to oxidative processes related to light. The film with the OLE was shown to have an antimicrobial capacity during the storage of lamb meat, reducing the count of psychrophiles five-fold when compared to the samples packed by the control and commercial films; therefore, this novel film has the potential to increase the shelf life of lamb meat, and as such, is suitable for use as active packaging.Mast cells (MCs) are critical for initiating inflammatory responses to pathogens including viruses. Type I interferons (IFNs) that exert their antiviral functions by interacting with the type I IFN receptor (IFNAR) play a central role in host cellular responses to viruses. Given that virus-induced excessive toxic inflammatory responses are associated with aberrant IFNAR signaling and considering MCs are an early source of inflammatory cytokines during viral infections, we sought to determine whether IFNAR signaling plays a role in antiviral cytokine responses of MCs. IFNAR-intact, IFNAR-blocked, and IFNAR-knockout (IFNAR-/-) bone-marrow-derived MCs (BMMCs) were treated in vitro with a recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSVΔm51) to assess cytokine production by these cells. All groups of MCs produced the cytokines interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α in response to rVSVΔm51. However, production of the cytokines was lowest in IFNAR-intact cells as compared with IFNAR-/- or IFNAR-blocked cells at 20 h post-stimulation. Surprisingly, rVSVΔm51 was capable of infecting BMMCs, but functional IFNAR signaling was able to protect these cells from virus-induced death. This study showed that BMMCs produced pro-inflammatory cytokines in response to rVSVΔm51 and that IFNAR signaling was required to down-modulate these responses and protect the cells from dying from viral infection.A novel magnetic composite material, Fe3O4@SiO2/chitosan/graphene oxide/β-cyclodextrin (MCGC), was prepared by multi-step methods. Various methods were used to systematically characterize the morphology, composition, structure, and magnetic properties of MCGC. The results obtained show that the composite material has good morphology and crystal structure and can be separated quickly by an external magnetic field. The operation is relatively easy, and the raw materials used to prepare this material are economical, easy to obtain, and environmentally friendly. The performance and adsorption mechanism for using this material as an adsorbent to remove bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol F (BPF) from water were studied. The adsorption parameters were optimized. Under optimal conditions, MCGC was found to remove more than 90% of BPA and BPF in a mixed solution (20 mg/L, 50 mL); the adsorption process for BPA and BPF on MCGC was found to follow a Redlich-Peterson isotherm model and Pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism for MCGC may involve a combination of various forces. Recycling experiments showed that after five uses, MCGC retained a more than 80% removal effect for BPA and BPF, and through real sample verification, MCGC can be used for wastewater treatment. Therefore, MCGC is economical, environmentally friendly, and easy to separate and collect, and has suitable stability and broad application prospects.Laryngeal paralysis associated with a generalized polyneuropathy (LPPN) most commonly exists in geriatric dogs from a variety of large and giant breeds. The purpose of this study was to discover the underlying genetic and molecular mechanisms in a younger-onset form of this neurodegenerative disease seen in two closely related giant dog breeds, the Leonberger and Saint Bernard. Neuropathology of an affected dog from each breed showed variable nerve fiber loss and scattered inappropriately thin myelinated fibers. Using across-breed genome-wide association, haplotype analysis, and whole-genome sequencing, we identified a missense variant in the CNTNAP1 gene (c.2810G>A; p.Gly937Glu) in which homozygotes in both studied breeds are affected. CNTNAP1 encodes a contactin-associated protein important for organization of myelinated axons. The herein described likely pathogenic CNTNAP1 variant occurs in unrelated breeds at variable frequencies. Individual homozygous mutant LPPN-affected Labrador retrievers that were on average four years younger than dogs affected by geriatric onset laryngeal paralysis polyneuropathy could be explained by this variant.
