Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is a common yet a largely underdiagnosed entity in developing countries. It is one treatable condition that is known to adversely affect the mortality and morbidity in heart failure (HF). This study is one of the first attempts aimed at studying SDB in chronic HF patients from an Indian subcontinent.

The aim of this study was to study the prevalence, type, and characteristics of SDB in chronic HF patients and their association with HF severity and left ventricular (LV) systolic function and also to determine the relevance of SDB symptoms and screening questionnaires such as the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Berlins questionnaire, and STOP-BANG score in predicting SDB in chronic HF patients.

We enrolled 103 chronic heart failure patients aged more than 18 years. Patients with a history of SDB and recent acute coronary syndrome within 3 months were excluded. Relevant clinical data, anthropometric measures, echocardiographic parameters, and sleep apnea questionnaires were collected, and all patients underwent the overnight type 3 sleep study.

The overall prevalence of SDB in our study was high at 81.55% (84/103), with a predominant type of SDB being obstructive sleep apnea (59.2%). The occurrence of SDB was significantly associated with the male gender (

= 0.002) and higher body mass index (BMI) values (

= 0.01). SDB symptoms and questionnaires like ESS, STOP-BANG, and Berlins also did not have a significant association with the occurrence of SDB in HF patients.

A retrospective case series was undertaken investigating the incidence and causes of bacteraemia in an adult intensive care unit with a high proportion of postoperative cardiothoracic surgical and oncology patients.

405 eligible patients were admitted to the intensive care unit over the course of nine months. 12 of these patients developed a unit-acquired blood stream infection. The average Acute Physiology And Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score of patients who developed bacteraemia was greater than that of those who did not (19.8 versus 16.8, respectively). The risk of developing bacteraemia was associated with intubation and higher rates of invasive procedures. The mortality rate amongst the group of patients that developed bacteraemia was 33%; this is in contrast to the mortality rate in our unit as 27.2%. There was a higher proportion of Gram-negative bacteria isolated on blood cultures (9 out of 13 isolates) than in intensive care units reported in other studies.

Sudden cardiac death is a leading cause of death from coronary heart disease (CHD). The risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) increases with age, and sudden arrhythmic death remains a major cause of mortality in elderly individuals, especially ventricular arrhythmias (VA). We developed a risk prediction model by combining ECG and other clinical noninvasive indexes including biomarkers and echocardiology for VA in elderly patients with CHD.

In the retrospective study, a total of 2231 consecutive elderly patients (≥60 years old) with CHD hospitalized were investigated, and finally 1983 patients were enrolled as the model group. The occurrence of VA within 12 months was mainly collected. Study parameters included clinical characteristics (age, gender, height, weight, BMI, and past medical history), ECG indexes (QTcd, Tp-e/QT, and HRV indexes), biomarker indexes (NT-proBNP, Myo, cTnT, CK-MB, CRP, K

The resulting ROS-responsive biomimetic NPs (MM/RNPs) exhibited favorable hydrodynamic size with negative surface charge, retained the functional proteins from MM, and showed ROS-responsive drug release. Because of the biomimetic camouflaging on surface, MM/RNPs could effectively escape from macrophages uptake and target to inflammatory endothelial cells. Meanwhile, MM/RNPs could inhibit the proliferation of macrophages and smooth muscle cells in vitro. Furthermore, the MM-coated NPs were found to be nontoxic in both cytotoxicity assay and in vivo toxicity evaluation. We describe here the surgical management of two pure breed cats with traumatic atlantoaxial subluxation. One cat was ambulatory tetraparetic on presentation and the second was tetraplegic, both with cervical spinal pain and acute onset of paresis with subsequent deterioration. MRI was performed in both cases, demonstrating spinal cord injury. Flexed lateral cervical radiographs were needed to confirm atlantoaxial subluxation in one case. CT was performed for surgical planning and surgical stabilisation was achieved with threaded pins and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) cement; odontoidectomy was required in one case. Both cats showed improvement postoperatively, with no complications or deterioration seen. Following surgery, one cat made a complete recovery; however, the second cat retained significant deficits.

While seemingly a well-intentioned adjunct to public health, there are several ethical and legal concerns to this approach. For example, the role of consent to use individual data in this manner has only been given cursory attention. Social media users may not even be aware that their social media posts, movements, and Internet searches are being analyzed by non-health professionals, who have the decision-making ability to involve law enforcement upon suspicion of potential self-harm. Failure to obtain such consent presents privacy risks and can lead to exposure and wider potential harms. We argue that Facebook's practices in this area should be subject to well-established protocols. These should resemble those utilized in the field of human subjects research, which upholds standardized, agreed-upon, and well-recognized ethical practices based on generations of precedent.
