We determined whether resilience factors such as self-efficacy, stress coping styles, and social support were differentially associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in men and women with epilepsy after controlling for depression, anxiety, and daily-life stress.
This was a cross-sectional study of 129 adults with epilepsy. The Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory-31 (QOLIE-31), Epilepsy Self-Efficacy Scale, Way of Stress Coping Checklist, Social Support Scale, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Daily Hassles Scale were used. Stepwise linear regression analyses were performed.
Except for medication effects, there were no gender differences in the QOLIE-31 and its subscales. The medication effects score was higher in men than in women after controlling for BDI scores. The BDI scores were independently associated with the QOLIE-31 score in men and women. Epilepsy self-efficacy was associated with the QOLIE-31 in men, whereas social support was associated with the QOLIE-31 in women. Coping strategies were associated with the QOLIE-31 in neither men nor women. Seizure frequency, daily-life stress, and anxiety were also negatively associated with the QOLIE-31, but only in men. The coefficients of determination were 0.637 and 0.587 in the men's and women's models, respectively.
The influence of self-efficacy and social support on HRQoL differed between men and women with epilepsy even after controlling for psychological distress. These findings could contribute to the development of successful gender-specific psychosocial interventions to improve HRQoL in men and women with epilepsy.

Frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) is the second most common focal epilepsy, while a few studies have focused on auras in FLE. To better understand FLE, we analyzed the clinical characteristics, values, and limitations of auras in FLE. Pyrrolidinedithiocarbamateammonium The incidence rate of aura in FLE was 37.9% in our study. We included 54 patients and 76 auras in 11 categories were reported. The rate of auras in the decreasing order are as follows autonomic aura; emotional aura; somatosensory aura; psychic aura; cephalic aura; abdominal aura; whole-body sensory aura, visual aura; auditory aura; and vestibular and unclassified aura. A significant number of aura types can be reported by FLE patients; autonomic aura was the most frequent category and somatosensory auras are most likely associated with the contralateral motor areas.The purpose of this paper is to analyze the efficiency of the police service in Spanish municipalities with a population of more than 50,000 inhabitants. Using Data Envelopment Analysis, we obtain the efficiency levels and the targets that the input and outputs have to reach to be efficient in the provision of the police service. Next, and based on the literature, the effect of the following environmental variables is verified young population, number of foreigners, unemployment, municipal per capita income, tourist level of the municipality, and ideology and political strength of the municipal government. Findings show that an increase in the number of young people in the municipality means an improved efficiency in the local police service. In contrast, cultural diversity (measured by the percentage of foreigners in the total population), unemployment, the mayor's ideology and political fragmentation of government do not have a significant effect on the level of efficiency. On the other hand, higher municipal per capita income means less efficiency, while an increase in tourism activity is related to the improvement of this.
The role of cardiovascular risk factors in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is controversial. A favourable profile has been found in ALS patients, but previous studies have not specifically considered the profile in different disease phenotypes.
Demographic data, smoking habits, lifetime exercise, and medical history including diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, stroke, and cardiac events, were analysed in ALS patients and in controls with other neurological disorders, utilising a standardized questionnaire applied by the same neurologist. In ALS patients the results were analysed according to their different phenotypes. Univariate analyses and multinomial logistic models were applied to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CIs) for covariates, to test potential modifiers and their effects.

Neurological disorders are common in sub-Saharan African, but accurate neuroepidemiologic data are lacking from the region. We assessed a neuroepidemiological screening tool in a rural Ugandan cohort with high HIV prevalence.
Participants were recruited from the Rakai Neurology Study in rural Rakai District, Uganda. A nurse administered the tool and a sociodemographic survey. 100 participants returned for validation examinations by a neurologist (validation cohort). The diagnostic utility and validity of the instrument were calculated and characteristics of those with and without neurological disorders compared.
The tool was administered to 392 participants, 48% female, 33% people with HIV, average age 35.1±8.5years. 33% of the study cohort screened positive for neurologic disorders. These participants were older [mean (SD) 38.3 (9.7) vs. 33.5 (7.1) years, p<0.001], had a lower Karnofsky score [89.8 (8.4) vs. 93.9 (7.5), p<0.001] and had a lower body mass index [21.8 (3.3) vs. 22.8 (3.7), p=0.007] implemented across new populations.
