Vitamin D deficiency prevalence in children has been rising. Low 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) levels contribute to poor asthma control in children. This study assessed 25(OH)D3 levels in children with asthma from Riyadh with respect to anthropometrics, dietary, and lifestyle variables. Children with asthma (n, 60; 2-17 years) were assessed for serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) level and body anthropometrics (weight, height, and body mass index [BMI]). Vitamin D dietary intake, sun exposure, and sociodemographic data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Thirty-one children (52%) had a 25(OH)D3 level  50% of the children with asthma had below sufficiency vitamin D levels. The vitamin D screening and supplementation of older and overweight children with asthma is recommended. This study evaluated the bone regeneration capacity and mechanical properties of block-type hydroxyapatite (HA)/tricalcium phosphate (TCP) scaffolds in response to different concentrations of polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) and recombinant human bone morphogenic protein 2 (rhBMP-2). Thirty-two male white rabbits were used as a model of calvarial bone defect and classified into eight groups according to type and concentration of growth factor administered, viz., control group (only HA/TCP scaffold), scaffold + PDRN (0.1, 1, 5, and 10 mg/mL each) and scaffold + rhBMP-2 (0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 mg/mL each). The specimens were evaluated using histomorphometric and radiological analyses. Histomorphometric analyses indicated that the administration of PDRN did not increase bone formation. However, significant increases in bone formation were observed with the administration of rhBMP-2 at 0.05 and 0.10 mg/mL on week 8 compared to the control (p  less then  0.05). Radiological analyses revealed a significant increase in bone formation at week 8 with the administration of PDRN at 5 mg/mL and 10 mg/mL, and rhBMP-2 at 0.05 or 0.10 mg/mL compared to the control (p  less then  0.05). Our findings show that block-type HA/TCP scaffolds possess sufficient mechanical strength and bone regeneration capacity when used with optimal concentrations of growth factors. On recreational sandy beaches, there are guidelines for the management of bacterial pollution in coastal waters regarding untreated sewage, urban wastewater, and industrial wastewater. However, terrestrial plant debris on coastal beaches can be abundant especially after floods and whilst it has rarely been considered a concern, the bacterial population associated with this type of pollution from the viewpoint of public health has not been adequately assessed. In this study, microbes associated with plant debris drifting onto Kizaki Beach in Japan were monitored for 8 months throughout the rainy season, summer, typhoon season, and winter. Here we show that faecal-indicator bacteria in the plant debris and sand under the debris were significantly higher than the number of faecal bacteria in the sand after a 2015 typhoon. When we focused on specific pathogenic bacteria, Brevundimonas vesicularis and Pseudomonas alcaligenes were commonly detected only in the plant debris and sand under the debris during the survey period. The prompt removal of plant debris would therefore help create safer beaches. The study aimed at investigating copper, lead, and cadmium removal from both single and mixed metal solutions by Michelia figo (Lour.) Spreng. wood sawdust treated with 0.5 mol l-1 NaOH for four hours. In order to evaluate the effects of each factor and interactions between factors on metal ion biosorption, a 23 factorial experimental design was applied. FTIR results showed that the metal ions would bind to the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of M. figo wood sawdust biomass. The main effects and interactions of three factors pH (3 and 5), initial metal ion concentration (C0, 0.157 and 1.574 mmol L-1), and dosage of biomass (D, 4 and 10 g L-1) at two levels were analyzed. The most significant variable regarding Cu2+ and Pb2+ biosorption was initial metal iron concentration. For Cd2+, pH was found to be the most significant factor. The maximum removal efficiencies were 94.12 and 100% for Cu2+ and Cd2+, respectively, at conditions of (+ 1, - 1, + 1) pH 5, initial metal concentration 0.157 mmol L-1 and dosage of biomass 10 g L-1, while 96.39% for Pb2+ at conditions of (- 1, - 1, + 1) pH 3, initial metal concentration 0.157 mmol L-1 and dosage of biomass 10 g L-1. There were some interactions between factors pH*C0 and C0*D for Cu2+, pH*C0, pH*D and C0*D for Pb2+, pH*C0 and C0*D for Cd2+. Biosorption from a multi metal system showed that the presence of Cu2+ and Cd2+ had no significant influence on the Pb2+ removal, while Pb2+ in solution significantly decreased the removal efficiencies of the other two metals.Plants have difficulty absorbing phosphorus from volcanic ash soils owing to the adsorption of phosphorus by aluminum and iron in the soils. DEG-77 cell line Thus, on volcanic ash soils, the phosphorus source for natural vegetation is expected to be organic matter, however, there is a lack of experimental evidence regarding this occurrence. Here, we studied the effect of organic matter on plant growth of some species that occur in primary successions of volcanic ash soil ecosystems, based on growth experiments and chemical analyses. We found that a large amount of inorganic phosphorus (but only a limited amount of inorganic nitrogen) is leached from fresh leaf litter of the pioneer spices Fallopia japonica at the initial stage of litter decomposition. Phosphorus from the fresh litter specifically activated the growth of subsequently invading nitrogen-fixing alder when immature volcanic soil was used for cultivation. In contrast, old organic matter in mature soil was merely a minor source of phosphorus. These results suggest that fresh litter of F. japonica is essential for growth of nitrogen-fixing alder because the litter supplies phosphorus. We consider that rapid phosphorus cycles in fresh litter-plant systems underlie the productivity of natural vegetation even in mature ecosystems established on volcanic ash soils.
