DNA methylation plays important roles in the regulation of gene expression and maintenance of genome stability in many organisms, including plants. In this study, we treated rice with gamma rays (GRs) and DNA methyltransferase inhibitors (DNMTis) to induce variations in DNA methylation and evaluated epigenetic diversity using methylation-sensitive amplified polymorphism (MSAP) and transposon methylation display (TMD) marker systems. Comparative and integrated analyses of the data revealed that both GRs and DNMTis alone have epimutagenic effects and that combined treatment enhanced these effects. Calculation of methylation rates based on band scoring suggested that both GRs and DNMTis induce epigenetic diversity by demethylation in a dose-dependent manner, and combined treatment can induce variations more synergistically. The difference in the changes in full and hemi-methylation rates between MSAP and TMD is presumed to be caused by the different genomic contexts of the loci amplified in the two marker systems. Principal coordinate, phylogenic, and population structure analyses commonly yielded two clusters of individuals divided by DNMTi treatment. The clustering pattern was more apparent in TMD, indicating that DNMTis have a stronger effect on hypermethylated repetitive regions. These findings provide a foundation for understanding epigenetic variations induced by GRs and DNMTis and for epigenetic mutation breeding. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of purified extract from Rosa spinosissima fruits on the quality characteristics and antioxidant properties of yoghurt. The extract, added to yoghurt at a concentration of 0.1% and 0.2%, contained high quantities of phenolic compounds and exhibited high antioxidant activity due to the presence of anthocyanins flavan-3-ols, flavonols and ellagitannins. Yoghurt physicochemical properties, microbiology and antioxidant properties were evaluated after 1, 7 and 14 days of storage at a temperature of 4 °C. The data revealed a positive influence of rose preparation on yoghurt's microflora and on its other properties. The highest count of traditional yoghurt microflora was observed in samples with 0.2% of extract. Its addition had a positive effect on the yoghurts' color, giving them a characteristic pink color of an intensity dependent on additive concentration. It also significantly affected the yoghurts' antioxidant properties, which were stable during storage, as well as the content of the introduced phenolic compounds. The structure of the Zn(II) complex of 5-caffeoylquinic acid (chlorogenic acid, 5-CQA) and the type of interaction between the Zn(II) cation and the ligand were studied by means of various experimental and theoretical methods, i.e., electronic absorption spectroscopy UV/Vis, infrared spectroscopy FT-IR, elemental, thermogravimetric and density functional theory (DFT) calculations at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power), CUPRAC (cupric reducing antioxidant power) and trolox oxidation assays were applied in study of the anti-/pro-oxidant properties of Zn(II) 5-CQA and 5-CQA. The antimicrobial activity of these compounds against Escherichiacoli, Pseudomonasaeruginosa, Bacillussubtilis, Staphylococcusaureus, Salmonellaenteritidis and Candidaalbicans was tested. An effect of Zn(II) chelation by chlorogenic acid on the anti-/pro-oxidant and antimicrobial activities of the ligand was discussed. Moreover, the mechanism of the antioxidant properties of Zn(II) 5-CQA and 5-CQA were studied on the basis of the theoretical energy descriptors and thermochemical parameters. Zn(II) chlorogenate showed better antioxidant activity than chlorogenic acid and commonly applied natural (L-ascorbic acid) and synthetic antioxidants (butylated hydroxyanisol (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)). The pro-oxidant activity of Zn(II) 5-CQA was higher than the ligand and increased with the rise of the compound concentration The type of Zn(II) coordination by the chlorogenate ligand strongly affected the antioxidant activity of the complex.Tumor is a complex system of interactions between cancer cells and other cells of the tumor microenvironment. The cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) of the tumor microenvironment remain in close contact with the cancer cells and play an important role in cancer progression. Genetically, CAFs are more stable than cancer cells, making them an attractive target for genetic modification in gene therapy. However, the efficiency of various promoters for transgene expression in fibroblasts is scarcely studied. We performed a comparative analysis of transgene long-term expression under the control of strong cytomegalovirus promoter (pCMV), constitutive cell promoter of the PCNA gene (pPCNA), and the potentially fibroblast-specific promoter of the IGFBP2 gene (pIGFBP2). In vitro expression of the transgene under the control of pCMV in fibroblasts was decreased soon after transduction, whereas the expression was more stable under the control of pIGFBP2 and pPCNA. The efficiency of transgene expression was higher under pPCNA than that under pIGFBP2. Additionally, in a mouse model, pPCNA provided more stable and increased transgene expression in fibroblasts as compared to that under pCMV. We conclude that PCNA promoter is the most efficient for long-term expression of transgenes in fibroblasts both in vitro and in vivo.Although the high rate of food insecurity among people with disabilities and their households has emerged as an important concern in public health and nutrition policy, the available data on these issues are still too limited to fully understand this phenomenon. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of food insecurity between households with and without persons with disabilities and to explore which sociodemographic and disability characteristics are associated with household food insecurity among households with members with disabilities. The data of 2690 households with and without members with disabilities from the 2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed. Household food insecurity was more prevalent among households including persons with disabilities than among those without such members. The likelihood of experiencing food insecurity was especially high in households having a female head with a disability (odds ratio (OR) = 1.98); working-age adults with disabilities (OR = 1.70); members with disabilities who were not economically active (OR = 1.53); and members with mental disabilities (OR = 2.81), disabilities involving internal organs (OR = 4.38), or severe (grades 1-3) disabilities (OR = 1.73). The findings indicate that the disability status and sociodemographic characteristics of disabled family members are closely associated with household food security status. Background Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a palliative treatment for medical intractable epileptic syndromes not eligible for resective surgery. Health technology assessment (HTA) represents a modern approach to the analysis of technologies used for healthcare. The purpose of this study is to assess the clinical, organizational, financial, and economic impact of VNS therapy in drug-resistant epilepsies and to establish the congruity between costs incurred and health service reimbursement. Methods The present study used an HTA approach. It is based on an extensive detailed bibliographic search on databases (Medline, Pubmed, Embase and Cochrane, sites of scientific societies and institutional sites). The HTA study includes the following issues (a) social impact and costs of the disease; (b) VNS eligibility and clinical results; (c) quality of life (QoL) after VNS therapy; (d) economic impact and productivity regained after VNS; and (e) costs of VNS. Results Literature data indicate VNS as an effective treatment with a potential positive impact on social aspects and on quality of life. The diagnosis-related group (DRG) financing, both on national and regional levels, does not cover the cost of the medical device. There was an evident insufficient coverage of the DRG compared to the full cost of implanting the device. Conclusions VNS is a palliative treatment for reducing seizure frequency and intensity. Despite its economic cost, VNS should improve patients' quality of life and reduce care needs. The complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) microbolometer technology provides a low-cost approach for the long-wave infrared (LWIR) imaging applications. The fabrication of the CMOS-compatible microbolometer infrared focal plane arrays (IRFPAs) is based on the combination of the standard CMOS process and simple post-CMOS micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) process. With the technological development, the performance of the commercialized CMOS-compatible microbolometers shows only a small gap with that of the mainstream ones. This paper reviews the basics and recent advances of the CMOS-compatible microbolometer IRFPAs in the aspects of the pixel structure, the read-out integrated circuit (ROIC), the focal plane array, and the vacuum packaging. In this study, a novel polystyrene-poly(hydroxamic acid) copolymer was synthesized as an effective adsorbent for the treatment of rare earth elements. TNG260 Through the use of elemental analysis as well as FTIR, SEM, XPS, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurement, the synthesized polymer was found to have a specific surface area of 111.4 m2·g-1. The adsorption performances of rare metal ions were investigated under different pH levels, contact times, initial concentrations of rare earth ions, and temperatures. The adsorption equilibrium for La3+, Ce3+, and Y3+ onto a polystyrene-poly(hydroxamic acid) copolymer is described by the Langmuir model, which confirms the applicability of monolayer coverage of rare earth ions onto a polystyrene-poly(hydroxamic acid) copolymer. The amount of adsorption capacities for La3+, Ce3+, and Y3+ reached 1.27, 1.53, and 1.83 mmol·g-1 within four hours, respectively. The adsorption process was controlled by liquid film diffusion, particle diffusion, and chemical reaction simultaneously. The thermodynamic parameters, including the change of Gibbs free energy (∆G), the change of enthalpy (∆H), and the change of entropy (∆S), were determined. The results indicate that the adsorption of resins for La3+, Ce3+ and Y3+ was spontaneous and endothermic. The polymer was also used as a recyclable adsorbent by the desorption experiment.High porosity (40% to 60%) 316L stainless steel containing well-interconnected open-cell porous structures with pore openness index of 0.87 to 1 were successfully fabricated by binder jetting and subsequent sintering processes coupled with a powder space holder technique. Mono-sized (30 µm) and 30% (by volume) spherically shaped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) powder was used as the space holder material. The effects of processing conditions such as (1) binder saturation rates (55%, 100% and 150%), and (2) isothermal sintering temperatures (1000 ○C to 1200 ○C) on the porosity of 316L stainless steel parts were studied. By varying the processing conditions, porosity of 40% to 45% were achieved. To further increase the porosity values of 316L stainless steel parts, 30 vol. % (or 6 wt. %) of PMMA space holder particles were added to the 3D printing feedstock and porosity values of 57% to 61% were achieved. Mercury porosimetry results indicated pore sizes less than 40 µm for all the binder jetting processed 316L stainless steel parts.
