The bioconcentration factor (BCF) is a key parameter for bioavailability assessment of environmental pollutants in regulatory frameworks. The comparative toxicology and mechanism of action of congeners are also of concern. However, there are limitations to acquire them by conducting field and laboratory experiments while machinelearning is emerging as a promising predictive tool to fill the gap. In this study, the Direct Message Passing Neural Network (DMPNN) was applied to predict logBCFs of bisphenol A (BPA) and its four analogues (bisphenol AF (BPAF), bisphenol B (BPB), bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS)). For the test set, the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) and mean square error (MSE) were 0.85 and 0.52 respectively, suggesting a good predictive performance. The predicted logBCFs values by the DMPNN ranging from 0.35 (BPS) to 2.14 (BPAF) coincided well with those by the classical EPI Suite (BCFBAF model). Besides, estrogen receptor α (ERα) bioactivity of these bisphenols was also predicted well by the DMPNN, with a probability of 97.0 % (BPB) to 99.7 % (BPAF), which was validated by the extent of vitellogenin (VTG) induction in male zebrafish as a biomarker except BPS. Thus, with little need for expert knowledge, DMPNN is confirmed to be a useful tool to accurately predict logBCF and screen for estrogenic activity from molecular structures. Moreover, a gender difference was noted in the changes of three endpoints (logBCF, ER binding affinity and VTG levels), the rank order of which was BPAF > BPB > BPA > BPF > BPS consistently, and abnormal amino acid metabolism is featured as an omics signature of abnormal hormone protein expression.

The acute effects of exposure to ambient particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤1μm (PM

) on cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality remain unclear.

To investigate whether short-term exposure to ambient PM

was associated with mortality from total and/or cause-specific CVDs, and estimate the excess mortality.

A time-stratified case-crossover study was conducted among 1,081,507 CVD deaths in Jiangsu province, China from 2015 to 2020. We assessed daily residential ambient PM

exposures using a validated grid dataset for each subject. Conditional logistic regression models and distributed lag linear or nonlinear models were employed to quantify the association of PM

exposure with mortality during the same day of CVD death and 1day prior.

Each 10μg/m

increase of PM

exposure was significantly associated with a 1.46% (95% confidence interval 1.28%, 1.65%), 1.95% (1.28%, 2.63%), 1.16% (0.86%, 1.47%), 1.41% (1.13%, 1.69%), and 1.83% (1.37%, 2.30%) increased odds of mortality from total CVDs,bient PM1 was significantly associated with an increased odds of mortality from total and specific CVDs and may lead to considerable excess mortality especially among older adults. Our findings highlight a potential approach to prevent premature CVD deaths by reducing PM1 exposures and provide essential quantitative data for the development of future air quality standards for ambient PM1.

Radon is a radioactive noble gas naturally found in the earth crust that can accumulate in buildings. In addition to lung cancer, alpha particles emitted by radon may contribute to the risk of skin cancer. We evaluated the association between residential radon exposure and skin cancer mortality, over a fifteen year period, taking residential ultra-violet (UV) exposure into account.

We included 4.9 million adults from the Swiss National Cohort. Hazard ratios for melanoma mortality were estimated using Cox proportional hazard models (20+ years old; follow-up 2001-2015). Long-term modelled residential radon and ambient UV exposures were assigned at baseline, and included together in the Cox models. With age as a time scale, models were adjusted for calendar time, sex, marital status, education, mother tongue, socioeconomic position, and occupational environment with potential for UV exposure. Age specific hazard ratios were derived. Effect modification, sensitivity analyses and the shape of the exposure respuble the follow-up time, this study confirmed the previously observed association between residential radon exposure and melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer mortality in Switzerland. Accumulation of radon indoors is preventable and of public health importance.Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a threat to human and animal health, with the environment increasingly recognised as playing an important role in AMR evolution, dissemination, and transmission. Antibiotics can select for AMR at very low concentrations, similar to those in the environment, yet their release into the environment, e.g., from wastewater treatment plants, is not currently regulated. Understanding the selection risk antibiotics pose in wastewater and receiving waters is key to understanding if environmental regulation of antibiotics is required. We investigated the risk of selection occurring in UK wastewater and receiving waters by determining where measured environmental concentration data (n = 8187) for four antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, and erythromycin) collected in England and Wales 2015-2018 (sites n = 67) exceeded selective concentration thresholds derived from complex microbial community evolution experiments undertaken previously. We show that selection for AMR by ciprofloxacin is likely to have occurred routinely in England and Wales wastewater during the 2015-2018 period, with some seasonal and regional trends. Wastewater treatment reduces the selection risk posed by ciprofloxacin significantly, but not completely, and predicted risk in surface waters remains high in several cases. Conversely, the potential risks posed by the macrolides (azithromycin, clarithromycin, and erythromycin) were lower than those posed by ciprofloxacin. Our data demonstrate further action is needed to prevent selection for AMR in wastewater, with environmental quality standards for some antibiotics required in the future, and that selection risk is not solely a concern in low/middle income countries.Bio-stabilization sludge contains numerous dissolved organic matter (DOM) that could enter aquatic environments by soil leaching after sludge land use, but a clear understanding of their photochemical behavior is still lacking. In this study, we systematically investigated the photoactivity and photochemical transformation of aerobic composting sludge-derived DOM (DOMACS) and anaerobic digestion sludge-derived DOM (DOMADS) by using multispectral analysis coupled with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). The results indicated that DOMACS and DOMADS have a higher proportion of highly unsaturated and phenolic compounds (HuPh)with high DBEwa, but the different polyphenols (Polyph) abundance of them, causing the different photoactivity between them. DOMACS had much higher apparent quantum yields (AQY) for triplet states of dissolved natural organic matter (3DOM*) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) but slightly lower AQY for singlet oxygen (1O2) than DOMADS under simulated sunlight conditions. As the irradiation time increased, HuPh and Polyph (associated with humic-like substances) contained in DOMACS (DOMADS) decreased by 12.0% (14.1%) and 3.0% (0.2%), respectively, with concurrent decrease in average molecular weight and aromaticity moieties, resulting in more generation of aliphatic compounds. Furthermore, based on 27 types of photochemical transformation reactions, DOMACS containing higher fractions of O10-15 and N1-3Oy class preferred dealkyl group and carboxylic acid reactions, whereas DOMADS composed of more N4Oy and S2Oy fragments preferred oxygen addition and anmine reactions. Consequently, photochemical transformations reduced the Cd (II) ion activity in the presence of DOMACS (DOMADS). This study is believed to unveil the photochemical transformation of bio-stabilization sludge-derived DOM and its impact on pollutants' fate in the aquatic environment.Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are widely used chemicals and ubiquitous emerging organic pollutants in the environment, some of which have persistent, bio-accumulative, and toxic potentials. Elevated levels of LCMs have been found in the e-waste dismantling associated areas. However, information on their internal exposure bio-monitoring is scarce. For the first time, occurrences of LCMs were observed in the serum samples of occupational workers (n = 85) from an e-waste dismantling area in South China. selleck Twenty-nine LCMs were detected in serum samples of the workers, with a median value of 35.2 ng/mL (range 7.78-276 ng/mL). Eight noticed LCMs were found to have relatively high detection frequencies ranging from 52.9% to 96.5%. The correlation analysis of individual LCMs indicated potential common applications and similar sources to the LCMs in occupational workers. Fluorinated LCMs were identified as the predominant monomers in the workers. Additionally, the estimated daily intake of the LCMs in the occupational workers was significantly higher than those in residents from the reference areas (p less then 0.05, Mann-Whitney U Test, median values 1.46 ng/kg bw/day versus 0.40 ng/kg bw/day), indicating a substantially higher exposure level to e-waste dismantling workers.

Neurocognitive deficits have been proposed as endophenotypes for schizophrenia. Although neurocognitive functioning has been studied extensively in first-degree relatives of schizophrenia patients at single time points, little is known about the change or continuity in deficits across development.

The longitudinal sample was composed of 86 nonpsychotic participants who had a parent with schizophrenia (n=28), a parent with a nonschizophrenia mental disorder (n=31) or parents without mental illness (n=27). Executive functioning (EF) was assessed during adolescence (M=18years) and adulthood (M=32years); attention and memory were assessed at adulthood.

The schizophrenia group, as adults, showed deficits in attention and memory relative to the no mental illness group. Only on one memory task did the schizophrenia group perform more poorly than the other mental illness group. Executive functioning improved with age for all three groups on Wisconsin Card Sorting Test perseverative errors; the rate of improvemecognitive functions examined are endophenotypes of vulnerability to schizophrenia specifically. Modest stability of EF and improved performance with age may reflect cortical maturation during early adulthood.Lung transplant (LTx) physicians are responsible for highly complex post-LTx care, including monitoring of kidney function and responding to kidney function loss. Better survival of the LTx population and changing patient characteristics, including older age and increased comorbidity, result in growing numbers of LTx patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD after LTx is correlated with worse survival, decreased quality of life and high costs. Challenges lie in different aspects of post-LTx renal care. First, serum creatinine form the basis for estimating renal function, under the assumption that patients have stable muscle mass. Low or changes in muscle mass is frequent in the LTx population and may lead to misclassification of CKD. Second, standardizing post-LTx monitoring of kidney function and renal care might contribute to slow down CKD progression. Third, new treatment options for CKD risk factors, such as diabetes mellitus, proteinuria and heart failure, have entered clinical practice. These new treatments have not been studied in LTx yet but are of interest for future use.
