Recent work has shown that deep convolutional neural network is capable of solving inverse problems in computational imaging, and recovering the stress field of the loaded object from the photoelastic fringe pattern can also be regarded as an inverse problem solving process. However, the formation of the fringe pattern is affected by the geometry of the specimen and experimental configuration. When the loaded object produces complex fringe distribution, the traditional stress analysis methods still face difficulty in unwrapping. In this study, a deep convolutional neural network based on the encoder-decoder structure is proposed, which can accurately decode stress distribution information from complex photoelastic fringe images generated under different experimental configurations. The proposed method is validated on a synthetic dataset, and the quality of stress distribution images generated by the network model is evaluated using mean squared error (MSE), structural similarity index measure (SSIM), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and other evaluation indexes. The results show that the proposed stress recovery network can achieve an average performance of more than 0.99 on the SSIM.Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death worldwide and was responsible for 31% of all deaths in 2015. Changes in fluid pressures within the vessels of the circulatory system reflect the mechanical function of the heart. The jugular venous (JV) pulse waveform is an important clinical sign for assessing cardiac function. However, technology able to aid evaluation and interpretation are currently lacking. The goal of the current study was to develop a remote monitoring tool that aid clinicians in robust measurements of JV pulse waveforms. To address this need, we have developed a novel imaging modality, Specular Reflection Vascular Imaging (SRVI). The technology uses specular reflection for visualization of skin displacements caused by pressure pulsations in blood vessels. SRVI has been tested on 10 healthy volunteers. 10-seconds videos of the neck illuminated with a diffuse light source were captured at 250 fps. SRVI was able to identify and discriminate skin displacements caused by carotid artery and jugular vein pulsations to extract both carotid artery and jugular vein waveforms, making them easier to be visualized and interpreted. The method provided a 6-fold improvement in signal strength over a comparator remote PPG dataset. The current pilot study is a proof-of-concept demonstration of the potential of Specular Reflection Vascular Imaging for extraction of JV pulse waveforms.Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a debilitating disease that is a result of a breakdown of knee joint tissues following traumatic impact. The interplay of how these tissues influence each other has received little attention because of complex interactions. This study was designed to correlate the degeneration of the menisci, cartilage and subchondral bone following an acute traumatic event that resulted in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial meniscus tears. We used a well-defined impact injury animal model that ruptures the ACL and tears the menisci. Subsequently, the knee joints underwent ACL reconstruction and morphological analyses were performed on the menisci, cartilage and subchondral bone at 1-, 3- and 6-months following injury. The results showed that the morphological scores of the medial and lateral menisci worsened with time, as did the tibial plateau and femoral condyle articular cartilage scores. The medial meniscus was significantly correlated to the medial tibial subchondral bone at 1 month (p = 0.01), and to the medial tibial cartilage at 3 months (p = 0.04). There was only one significant correlation in the lateral hemijoint, i.e., the lateral tibial cartilage to the lateral tibial subchondral bone at 6 months (p = 0.05). These data may suggest that, following trauma, the observed medial meniscal damage should be treated acutely by means other than a full or partial meniscectomy, since that procedure may have been the primary cause of degenerative changes in the underlying cartilage and subchondral bone. In this study, we present a network embedding-based method, called DWPPI, for predicting the interactions between different plant proteins based on multi-source information and combined with deep neural networks (DNN). The DWPPI model fuses the protein natural language sequence information (attribute information) and protein behavior information to represent plant proteins as feature vectors and finally sends these features to a deep learning-based classifier for prediction. To validate the prediction performance of DWPPI, we performed it on three model plant datasets Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana), mazie (Zea mays), and rice (Oryza sativa). The experimental results with the fivefold cross-validation technique demonstrated that DWPPI obtains great performance with the AUC (area under ROC curves) values of 0.9548, 0.9867, and 0.9213, respectively. To further verify the predictive capacity of DWPPI, we compared it with some different state-of-the-art machine learning classifiers. Moreover, case studies were performed with the AC149810.2_FGP003 protein. As a result, 14 of the top 20 PPI pairs identified by DWPPI with the highest scores were confirmed by the literature. Complex odontomas are made of a mass consisting of an anarchic assembly of mineralized tissue (enamel, dentin, and cementum) and dental pulp; while compound odontomas are consisting of a set of small rudimentary teeth, assembling in clusters. They rarely show the features of both types together. The aim of this work is to report a rare presentation of an odontoma in a 24-year-old male patient, which present the characteristics of both complex and compound variants. Surgical excision of the lesion was performed. Anatomopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. Clinical and radiological survey does not show any recurrence.A 61-year-old male patient with Wegener's granulomatosis was admitted due to neck pain and quadriparesis. Patients with MF often experience a chronic course of disease. The spontaneous regression (SR) of MF is rare, and the factors that predict SR have not been recognized yet. Here, we are reporting a case of persistent MF who had prominent remission after COVID-19. This case report supports the possible antineoplastic effect of SARS-CoV-2. Understanding the underlying etiology of such effect can result in development of new target therapies for MF.Trichobezoars are foreign and indigestible materials in the gastrointestinal tract and are usually found in psychiatric females, who often deny eating their own hair, but also at situations of gastric dysmotility and prior gastric surgery. We describe an adolescent who was referred to the emergency department with the above symptoms and died after being discharged, regardless of the differential diagnosis and laboratory findings.The outcome of chronic meningitis depends to a large degree on the causative pathogen and the interval between onset of symptoms and diagnosis. We present a patient with a delayed diagnosis and several complications, for whom adequate therapy resulted in a favorable outcome. In a 76-year-old male patient, Candida albicans meningitis was diagnosed 4 months after the onset of symptoms. CSF findings (protein >1000 mg/L, predominance of intrathecal immunoglobulin A synthesis, lactate concentrations of approx. 10 mmol/L, leukocyte counts around 1000/μl, variable differential leukocyte counts) resembled tuberculous meningitis. In spite of the long interval without treatment, voriconazole 200 mg every 12 h for 7 weeks followed by fluconazole 300 mg/day maintenance therapy for 7 months led to a recovery with only mild deficits. The case illustrates that 1. C. albicans can cause chronic meningitis in patients without severe immune defects, 2. patients can survive C. albicans meningitis with mild long-term sequelae even when diagnosis and adequate treatment are delayed, and 3.
