The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of horizontal and incline bench press as well as the combination of both exercises on neuromuscular adaptation in untrained young men. Forty-seven untrained men were randomly assigned to one of the three groups 1) a horizontal bench press group (n= 15), 2) an incline bench press group (n= 15), and 3) a combination (horizontal + incline) group (n= 17). Training was conducted once a week for eight weeks, with equalized number of sets among groups. Muscle thickness, isometric strength and electromyography (EMG) amplitude of the pectoralis major were measured one week before and after the training period. There was no difference between groups for the change in horizontal bench press isometric strength (~ 10 kg increase, p=0.776) or incline bench press isometric strength (~ 11 kg increase, p=0.333). Changes in muscle thickness differed only in one of the three sites. The changes in the second intercostal space of the pectoralis major was greatest in the incline pressure group compared with the horizontal [mean difference (95% CI) of 0.62 (0.23, 1.0) cm, p=0.003] and combination groups [mean difference (95% CI) of 0.50 (0.14, 0.86) cm, p=0.008]. The change in EMG amplitude following training differed between groups in only one out of the four sites. The present results indicate that strength and conditioning professionals might consider that horizontal and incline bench press exercises, or a combination of both exercises can render similar change in general strength.The purpose of this study was to measure intrinsic motivation following the implementation of motivational coaching strategies in a semester long personalized adult fitness program. Sixty individuals (40 female/ 20 male, age= 48 ± 15 yrs) participated as clients in an undergraduate exercise training program led by student trainers at Taylor University. The program took place during two consecutive semesters, therefore subject participation ranged from one to two semesters. In addition to personalized exercise prescription, student trainers implemented motivational strategies using a motivational coaching guide aimed at increasing individuals' overall intrinsic motivation. Trainers utilized a coaching checklist to record the motivational strategies used with their client each session. Intrinsic motivation was assessed before and after each program semester using an Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) and Motivational Client Scale (MCS). Clients' scores on the IMI increased from 3.38 ± 0.37 to 3.58 ± 0.31 (p less then 0.001; d= 0.587). Particularly, perceived competence increased from 3.01 ± 0.52 to 3.41 ± 0.49 (p less then 0.001; d= 0.793). Correspondingly, MCS scores also increased from 3.47 ± 0.72 to 3.87 ± 0.60 (p less then 0.001; d= 0.608). Specifically, clients' response to challenge increased from 3.48 ± 0.98 to 4.15 ± 0.65 (p less then 0.001; d=0.809). Our data indicate that it is possible to improve intrinsic motivation by implementing motivational strategies into a supervised adult fitness program. This finding suggests motivational coaching may be an important part of a standard training protocol for fitness trainers to help combat a public health concern initiation and adherence to exercise.Due to high interaction rates, smart devices are being utilized for mobile health (mHealth) interventions. Multimedia capabilities may be leveraged to improve mHealth exercise interventions. Our purpose was to explore individuals' perceptions of multimedia exercise prompts tailored to their immediate mental/physical states. Using electronic surveys, respondents provided in-the-moment ratings of emotional state, energy, fatigue, physical discomfort, and thirst, with higher scores reflecting a higher "readiness to exercise" (i.e., if a person is currently in a pleasant mood with high energy and low discomfort, he/she is likely to have a greater capacity for a larger dose of exercise). They were then provided with an exercise prompt designed to match their readiness to exercise, demonstrated via text and graphic interchange format (GIF) showing a research member completing the recommended activity. Survey data regarding GIF quality, self-efficacy, and methodological feedback were then collected and analyzed using a combination of parametric statistics and thematic analysis of open-ended feedback. Respondents (N=204; 47±10 years; BMI 29±6 kg/m2) indicated GIFs loaded quickly (5.29±1.2, scale 0-6), were clear (5.36±1.1), and easily understandable (5.43±1.1). High task self-efficacy scores (9.34±1.62, scale 0-10) and statistically significant differences in coping self-efficacy (i.e., how well a person would be able to complete the recommended activity when feeling mentally/physically worse or better; F=3.229, p less then .01) were found. Five themes relating to the exercise prompt were noted improve attractiveness, limiting factors, exercise clarification, liked/understandable/doable, and disliked/unwilling to complete. Further refinement of these methods is warranted prior to using multimedia prompts to elicit actual exercise performance.In order to excel in the National Football League (NFL) it would seem reasonable to assume an athlete has grit which consists of the constructs of consistency of interest and perseverance of effort. Grit-like qualities such as endurance, urgency and intensity, self-confidence, need for encouragement, and self-criticality may be of particular value for the athlete playing the Quarterback (QB) position. The purpose of the study was to assess the 5 grit-like constructs of endurance, urgency and intensity, self-confidence, need for encouragement, and self-criticality among NFL QBs. The Flippen ProfileTM assessment was administered to 29 NFL QBs and the 5 grit-like constructs were recorded. NVL-655 Each of the 5 grit-like constructs were scored on a scale of 0-100, where high scores were considered desirable for endurance, urgency and intensity, and self-confidence, while lower scores were considered as desirable for need for encouragement, and self-criticality. The scores for each of the 5 grit-like constructs were then partitioned by three categories of QB years played 1-2 (n=8), 3-7 (n=13), and ≥8 (n=8) years.
