Patient-centered care and patient involvement have been increasingly recognized as crucial elements of patient safety. However, patient safety has rarely been evaluated from the patient perspective with a quantitative approach aiming at making patient safety and preventable adverse events measurable.

The objectives of this study were to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a questionnaire assessing patient safety by perceived triggers of preventable adverse events among patients in primary health-care settings while considering mental health.

Two hundred and ten participants were recruited through various digital and print channels and asked to complete an online survey between November 2019 and April 2020. Exploratory factor analysis was performed to identify domains of triggers of preventable adverse events affecting patient safety. Furthermore, a multi-trait scaling analysis was performed to evaluate internal reliability as well as item-scale convergent-discriminant validity. A multiva of age perceived a significantly greater threat to their own safety compared to patients below that age.

The developed Perceptions of Preventable Adverse Events Assessment Tool (PPAEAT) exhibits good psychometric properties, which supports its use in future research and primary health-care practice. Further validation of the PPAEAT in different settings, languages and larger samples is needed. The results of this study need to be considered when assessing patient safety in the context of health-care research.The walnut twig beetle, Pityophthorus juglandis Blackman, the vector of thousand cankers disease (TCD), poses a significant threat to North American walnut (Juglandaceae Juglans) trees. Despite discovery of TCD-related tree mortality over a decade ago, management options are lacking. This study represents the culmination of several years of investigating the chemical ecology of P. juglandis in hopes of developing a semiochemical repellent to disrupt the beetle's host colonization and aggregation behaviors. Numbers of P. juglandis landing on semiochemical-treated Juglans regia L. trees in a commercial walnut orchard were compared based on captures on sticky traps. Two repellent combinations were tested R-(+)-limonene and trans-conophthorin (LimeCon), and R-(+)-limonene, trans-conophthorin, and R-(+)-verbenone (LCV). Both repellents reduced P. juglandis aggregation (captures) equally; thus, we proceeded with the LimeCon combination to reduce potential treatment cost. Subsequent trials included a 2× dose (Dual) of LimeCon. Both LimeCon and Dual significantly reduced the number of P. juglandis caught compared with the baited control, however, only for the lower of two trap positions. Beetle landings were modeled by trap distance from repellent placement on each tree. Beetle responses to the pheromone lure were surprisingly localized and did not bring the whole tree under attack. LimeCon, LCV, and Dual treatments averaged fewer than a single beetle caught for all trap distances; however, performance of the repellents beyond 150 cm is not clear due to the localized landing response of P. juglandis to pheromone lures. Further testing is required to fully analyze the zone of inhibition of the LimeCon repellent.Profiling of the illicit fentanyl supply is invaluable from surveillance and intelligence perspectives. An important strategy includes the study of chemical attribution signatures (e.g. trace amounts of synthesis precursors, impurities/byproducts in seized material, metabolites in biological samples). This information provides valuable insight into the employed synthesis routes at the heart of illicit fentanyl manufacture (previously mainly the so-called Janssen or Siegfried methods), allowing to track and ultimately regulate crucial precursors. This report focuses on phenethyl-4-ANPP, a formerly unknown compound that was identified for the first time in a fentanyl powder sample seized in April 2019, followed by its identification in a biological sample in December 2019. Between 2019-Q4 and 2020-Q3, phenethyl-4-ANPP was detected in 25/1054 fentanyl cases in the United States. There are currently no reports on how this compound may have ended up in illicit drug preparations and whether its presence may have potential in vivo relevance. We propose three possible fentanyl synthesis routes which, when badly executed in a single reaction vessel, may involve the formation of phenethyl-4-ANPP. We hypothesize that the presence of the latter is the result of a shift in fentanyl synthesis routes in an attempt to circumvent restrictions on previously used precursors. Using a cell-based µ-opioid receptor (MOR) recruitment assay, we show that the extent of MOR activation caused by 100 µM phenethyl-4-ANPP is comparable to that exerted by a roughly 100,000-fold lower concentration of fentanyl (0.001 µM or 0.336 ng/mL). Negligible in vitro opioid activity, combined with its low abundance in fentanyl preparations, most likely renders phenethyl-4-ANPP biologically irrelevant in vivo. However, as clandestine operations are constantly changing shape, monitoring of fentanyl attributions remains pivotal in our understanding and control of illicit fentanyl manufacture and supply.

Various epidemiological and experimental studies propose that helminths could play a preventive role against the progression of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). T2DM induces microvascular and large vessel complications mediated by elevated levels of angiogenic factors and soluble RAGE ligands. However, the interactions between helminths and host angiogenic factors and RAGE ligands are unexplored.

To assess the relationship between a soil-transmitted helminth, Strongyloides stercoralis (Ss) and T2DM, we measured plasma levels of VEGF-A, C, D, Angio-1 and Angio-2 and their receptors VEGF-R1, R2 and R3 as well as sRAGE and their ligands AGE, S100A12 and HMBG-1 in individuals with T2DM with Ss+ or without Ss infection (Ss-). In Ss+ individuals, we also measured the levels of aforementioned factors 6 months following anthelmintic therapy.

Ss+ individuals exhibited significantly decreased levels of VEGF-A, C, D, Angio-1 and Angio-2 and their soluble receptors VEGF-R1, R2 and R3, that increased following anthelmintic therapy. Likewise, Ss+ individuals exhibited significantly decreased levels of AGE and their ligands sRAGE, S100A12 and HMBG-1 which reversed following anthelmintic therapy.

Stem borers, including the Mexican rice borer, Eoreuma loftini (Dyar), are emerging as more consistent pests in Louisiana and Texas, but the relationship between blanked panicles (whiteheads) caused by stem borer feeding and yield loss is not well understood. A series of field trials was conducted in Louisiana from 2019 to 2020 to determine the relative yield loss by manipulating infestations of both pests with selective insecticides. Results indicate losses from L. oryzophilus infestations are greater than those for E. loftini in early planted rice. In contrast, relative yield losses were approximately equal in later planted rice in 2019, in which E. loftini infestations were high. Additive impacts of the root-feeding L. oryzophilus and the stem-feeding E. loftini were not observed in our study. Linear regression revealed that each increase of one whitehead per square meter is associated with a 1.7% loss in yield. Results from ratoon rice suggest that protection from L. oryzophilus in the main crop also improves yield in the second crop. Collectively, results demonstrate the continued need for effective L. oryzophilus management programs to prevent economic losses. Conversely, findings suggest that benefits of E. loftini control may be minimal in many instances. Control of E. loftini is most likely to be economical under conditions where high populations are anticipated such as in late-planted fields or regions that previously had high infestations.

This is a report of the results of 4 facilitated workshops aimed at developing a standardized chiropractic technique curriculum.

Workshops were held at research conferences during 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2019. Participants were tasked with developing recommendations for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures appropriate for chiropractic technique programs.

For diagnostic procedures, there was general agreement among participants that chiropractic programs should include diagnostic imaging, postural assessment, gait analysis, palpation (static, motion, and joint play/springing), global range of motion, and evidence-based orthopedic/neurological tests. No consensus could be reached with respect to chiropractic x-ray line marking (spinography) nor heat sensing instruments, and there was only partial consensus on leg length assessment. For therapeutic procedures, all participants agreed that the following should be included high-velocity, low amplitude spinal and extremity manipulation, adjustments assisted byc and therapeutic procedures that ought to be included in chiropractic technique programs.

Cocaine addiction is associated with altered sensitivity to natural reinforcers and intense drug craving. However, previous findings on reward-related responses are mixed and few studies have examined whether reward responses relate to tonic cocaine craving.

We combined fMRI and a monetary incentive delay task to investigate these issues. Imaging data were processed with published routines and the results were evaluated with a corrected threshold. We compared reward responses of 50 cocaine dependent individuals (CDs) and 45 healthy controls (HCs) for the ventral striatum (VS) and the whole brain. We also examined the regional responses in association with tonic cocaine craving, as assessed by the Cocaine Craving Questionnaire (CCQ) in CDs. We performed mediation analyses to evaluate the relationship between regional responses, CCQ score, and recent cocaine use.
