The purpose of this paper is to describe a social network theory-guided, no-cost, Facebook recruitment strategy in comparison to a traditional recruitment campaign for a national online intervention study for grandmother caregivers (n = 348); 211 participants were recruited via Facebook, and 137 through traditional techniques. Participation rates did not vary by recruitment method. Facebook participants were slightly older, higher income, and more likely to be white and married, but did not differ in education levels. Our strategy quickly obtained an engaged and committed participant base. The application of social network theory to traditional recruitment strategies represents a novel way for researchers to recruit through Facebook and yield viable and engaged participants without investing in Facebook ads.
Heart failure is a leading cause of death worldwide and is associated with the rising prevalence of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes.
-GlcNAcylation (the attachment of
-linked β-N-acetylglucosamine [
-GlcNAc] moieties to cytoplasmic, nuclear, and mitochondrial proteins) is a posttranslational modification of intracellular proteins and serves as a metabolic rheostat for cellular stress. Total levels of
-GlcNAcylation are determined by nutrient and metabolic flux, in addition to the net activity of 2 enzymes
-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) and
-GlcNAcase (OGA). Failing myocardium is marked by increased
-GlcNAcylation, but whether excessive
-GlcNAcylation contributes to cardiomyopathy and heart failure is unknown.
We developed 2 new transgenic mouse models with myocardial overexpression of OGT and OGA to control
-GlcNAcylation independent of pathologic stress.
We found that OGT transgenic hearts showed increased
-GlcNAcylation and developed severe dilated cardiomyopathy, ventricular arrhythof

-GlcNAcylation may represent a novel therapeutic approach for cardiomyopathy.
Our data provide evidence that excessive O-GlcNAcylation causes cardiomyopathy, at least in part, attributable to defective energetics. Enhanced OGA activity is well tolerated and attenuation of O-GlcNAcylation is beneficial against pressure overload-induced pathologic remodeling and heart failure. These findings suggest that attenuation of excessive O-GlcNAcylation may represent a novel therapeutic approach for cardiomyopathy.
Background dehydration in institutionalized elderly people has not been extensively studied. There are not clear data on the Spanish context. Aim to estimate the prevalence of dehydration and to identify the associated factors in institutionalized older people in a nursing home. Methods a cross-sectional study was carried out. Dehydration was measured through the colour of urine. For the identification of the associated factors, sociodemographic, clinical, functional, and mental variables were selected. Results the total sample studied was comprised of 96 individuals with a mean age of 86.6 years (± 7.1), of whom 80.2 % were women. The prevalence of dehydration was 31.3% (95 % CI, 22.0 to 40.6). The factors that were independently associated with dehydration were the presence of sunken eyes (OR = 8.67; p = 0.004), low fluid intake (OR = 3.96; p = 0.041), and both functional (OR = 0.97; p = 0.012) and cognitive (OR = 1.10; p = 0.009) impairment. Conclusions this study highlights the problem of dehydration in of dehydration was 31.3% (95 % CI, 22.0 to 40.6). Conclusions this study highlights the problem of dehydration in institutionalized older people in Spain. An urine colour table may be used routinely, non-invasively, and cheaply. Taking into account that chronic dehydration is most prevalent in elderly people, the identification of associated factors is a key factor for a successful approach. In situ X-ray scattering measurements of insect body surface lipids were successfully attempted by using a synchrotron X-ray source. The temperature-dependent structural changes of the cuticular hydrocarbons covering the forewing of an American cockroach were able to be followed, which showed that the majority of the hydrocarbons were in a liquid state even far below the critical temperature of water transpiration through the body surface. The results clearly demonstrated that synchrotron radiation X-ray scattering has the potential to obtain the detailed information about the intact lipid structure and physical properties on insect body surfaces.A one-pot procedure for deprotecting carboxylic esters under nonhydrolytic conditions is described. Typical alkyl carboxylates are readily deblocked to the carboxylic acids by the action of aluminum powder and iodine in anhydrous acetonitrile. Cleavage of lactones affords the corresponding ω-iodoalkylcarboxylic acids. Aryl acetylates undergo deacetylation with the participation of the neighboring group. This method enables the selective cleavage of alkyl carboxylic esters in the presence of aryl esters.Herein, we employ unsaturated pyrazolones in the Rauhut-Currier reaction for the first time. A domino Rauhut-Currier cyclization reaction has been developed between unsaturated pyrazolones and nitro-olefins. The trisubstituted tetrahydropyrano[2,3-c]pyrazoles were obtained in moderate to high yields with excellent diastereoselectivities. A few applications including a synthesis of disubstituted tetrahydropyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole have been demonstrated. A preliminary catalytic asymmetric version of this process was also studied with chiral DMAP catalysts.
