The efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids in the treatment of sepsis is controversial. We conducted an updated meta-analysis to clarify the efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids in patients with sepsis.

PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in adults with sepsis.

Twenty eligible RCTs involving 1514 patients were included in the meta-analysis. Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation was linked to reductions of mortality (

 = 0, relative risk [RR] = 0.82, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.69-0.97), the duration of mechanical ventilation (DMV;

 = 74%, weighted mean difference [WMD] = -2.20, 95% CI = -4.00 to -0.40), and intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS;

 = 91%, WMD = -3.86, 95% CI = -5.72 to -2.01). Subgroup analysis illustrated that mortality was significantly reduced in patients with sepsis and gastrointestinal dysfunction (RR = 0.5, 95% CI = 0.29-0.86,

 = 0).

Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation might be associated with reduced mortality in patients with sepsis, especially those with gastrointestinal dysfunction. Furthermore, omega-3 fatty acid administration could shorten DMV and ICU LOS.

We aimed to compare placental pathologies in pregnancies affected by term and preterm PE compared to normal pregnancies. PI3K inhibitor METHODS We performed a prospective case-cohort study. Low-risk nulliparous women were recruited in the first trimester and women who developed PE were recruited at diagnosis. Placental pathologies were reported according to the Amsterdam Placental Workshop Group Consensus Statement and were compared between cases and controls. PE cases stratified as term (≥37 weeks) and preterm PE ( less then 37 weeks). Our primary outcome was maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM). RESULTS Twenty-four women who developed preterm PE were compared to 10 women who developed term PE and 41 women without PE. Preterm PE (92%) was associated with more MVM than term PE (10%, p less then 0.01) and controls (4%, p less then 0.01), but the rate of MVM was similar between term PE and controls (p = 0.56). Preterm PE was also associated with more placental infarcts (65% vs. 20% vs. 15%); advanced villous maturation (91% vs. 30% vs. 1%); and hypoplastic villous maturation (70% vs. 10% vs. 3%); and moderate to severe decidual vasculopathy (56% vs. 10% vs. 3%) than term PE and controls (all p less then 0.05). CONCLUSION Most cases of preterm PE are associated with MVM, placental infarcts, advanced and/or hypoplastic villous maturation, and moderate to severe decidual vasculopathy, while it is infrequent in term PE and pregnancies without PE. Preterm and term preeclampsia have a different pathologic process that should be considered for their prevention and clinical management.The extant literature has merely focused on the receiving aspect of support. However, social relationships involve complex interactions, including receiving and giving support, the instrument that measures the bidirectional structure of social support has become crucial for improving the quality of life and wellbeing of individuals. This paper aims to adapt and assess aTurkish version of two-way social support scale. The validation of the Turkish version of the two-way social support scale was conducted on a sample of 252 university students and 278 community samples. Findings indicated that the 4-factor model fit the data well and support construct validity. Results also provided preliminary support for convergent validity. Low correlations (.21 to.45) between two-way social support sub-scales and altruism scale suggested the existence of divergent validity. Internal consistency reliability analyses revealed Cronbach's alpha values between.80 and.90 for each subscale. The predictiveness of the two-way social support scale was tested with life satisfaction and well-being scales. The results provided partial support for the predictive validity of two samples.Phytopathogens use secreted effector proteins to suppress host immunity and promote pathogen virulence, and there is increasing evidence that the host-pathogen interactome comprises a complex network. To identify novel interactors of the Pseudomonas syringae effector HopZ1a, we performed a yeast two-hybrid screen that identified a previously uncharacterized Arabidopsis protein that we designate HopZ1a interactor 1 (ZIN1). Additional analyses in yeast and in planta revealed that ZIN1 also interacts with several other P. syringae effectors. We show that an Arabidopsis loss-of-function zin1 mutant is less susceptible to infection by certain strains of P. syringae, while overexpression of ZIN1 results in enhanced susceptibility. Functionally, ZIN1 exhibits topoisomerase-like activity in vitro. Transcriptional profiling of wild-type and zin1 Arabidopsis plants inoculated with P. syringae indicated that while ZIN1 regulates a wide range of pathogen-responsive biological processes, the list of genes more highly expressed in zin1 versus wild-type plants is particularly enriched for ribosomal protein genes. Altogether, these data illuminate ZIN1 as a potential susceptibility hub that interacts with multiple effectors to influence the outcome of plant-microbe interactions.[Formula see text] Copyright © 2021 The Author(s).
