The His bundle is a part of the specialized electrical conduction system that provides a connection between the atrial and ventricular myocardial compartments in both normal and abnormal hearts. The aim of this study was to perform a morphometric analysis of His bundle characteristics of in humans, dogs, horses and pigs and compare them in these studied species. Histological sections of 5 μm thickness were obtained and stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome; the desmin and periodic acid-Schiff methods were also used for precise identification of cells. The His bundle was found to be longer in horses (2.85 ± 1.02 mm) and pigs (1.77 ± 0.9 mm) than in dogs (1.53 ± 0.8 mm) or humans, in which it was shortest (1.06 ± 0.6 mm). The area and diameters in His bundle cells, were significantly larger in pigs and horses than in humans (p  less then  0.001) or dogs (p  less then  0.001). We found two organizational patterns of His bundle components group I, with large cells and a high amount of collagen fibers in ungulates (pigs and horses); and group II, with smaller cells and lower abundance of collagen fibers in humans and dogs. Documenting cell size variations in the His bundle allows us not only to identify this bundle by histological or anatomical location but also to differentiate these cells from others such as nodal or Purkinje cells. Our analysis revealed that His bundle cells have discrete identities based on their morphometric and histological characteristics.

Bariatric surgery has been applied for weight loss and comorbidity control in China since 2000. Recent studies have shown positive results for bariatric surgery in patients with a body mass index (BMI) of less than 35 kg/m

. However, the effect of surgery on Chinese patients with type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has not yet been systematically investigated.

A comprehensive literature search was performed in the Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science from January 2014 to March 2020. All studies examined bariatric surgery outcomes on Chinese patients at 12-, 36-, and 60-month follow-up. The research followed the guidance of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols (PRISMA-P) recommendations.

Eleven studies containing 611 patients were included in this meta-analysis. Clinical indices at 12-, 36-, and 60-month follow-up were analyzed. Significant decreases were identified in body weight, BMI, waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), fasting plasma gluf less than 35 kg/m2. An increasing trend in the T2DM remission rate suggested promising future applications in this population.

The retinal microvasculature offers unique non-invasive evaluation of systemic microvascular abnormalities. Previous studies reported associations between retinal microvascular parameters (RMPs) and diabetes. The aim of this study was to assess associations between RMPs and diabetes in a cross-sectional analysis of older persons from the Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Ageing (NICOLA).

RMPs (central retinal arteriolar/venular equivalents, arteriolar to venular ratio, fractal dimension, and tortuosity) were measured from optic disc-centred fundus images using semi-automated software. Associations were assessed between RMPs and diabetes status with adjustment for potential confounders.

Data were included for 1762 participants with 209 classified as having diabetes. Participants had a mean age of 62.1 ± 8.5years, and 54% were female. As expected, participants with diabetes had significantly higher mean glycated haemoglobin A1c compared to participants without diabetes (57.4 ± 17.6mmol/mol versus 37.0 ± 4.2mmol/mol, respectively). In unadjusted and minimally adjusted regression, arteriolar to venular ratio, arteriolar tortuosity and venular tortuosity were significantly associated with diabetes (minimally adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.85; 95% confidence intervals [CIs] 0.73, 0.99; P = 0.04, OR = 1.18; 95% CI 1.02, 1.37; P = 0.03 and OR = 1.20; 95% CI 1.04, 1.38; P = 0.01, respectively), although all failed to remain significant following adjustment for potential confounders. No additional associations between other RMPs and diabetes were detected.

Despite previously reported associations between diabetes and RMPs, our study failed to corroborate these associations in an older community-based cohort.

To estimate these large-scale brain networks, the emergent method called "electroencephalography (EEG) source connectivity" has generated increasing interest in the network neuroscience community, due to its ability to identify cortical brain networks with satisfactory spatio-temporal resolution, while reducing mixing and volume conduction effects. check details However, no consensus has been reached yet regarding a unified EEG source connectivity pipeline, and several methodological issues have to be carefully accounted to avoid pitfalls. Thus, a validation toolbox that provides flexible "ground truth" models is needed for an objective methods/parameters evaluation and, thereby an optimization of the EEG source connectivity pipeline. In this paper, we show how a recently developed large-scale model of brain-scale activity, named COAd approach can be successfully applied to other experimental questions/contexts. We aim at presenting a proof-of-concept of the interest of COALIA in the network neuroscience field, and its potential use in optimizing the EEG source-space network estimation pipeline.N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were fabricated in a simple procedure by hydrothermal treatment of cellobiose and urea. When excited at 235 nm or 327 nm, only one emission peak at around 420 nm has been observed. With the addition of phosalone, the excitation band at 235 nm was efficiently quenched within 1 min, while the excitation band at 327 nm showed little change. Accordingly, the fluorescence of the N-CDs-phosalone mixture showed quenching under 254-nm UV light, while nearly no fluorescence quenching could be observed under 365-nm UV light. This phenomenon provides a novel anti-false-positive mechanism for phosalone identification. Therefore, the label-free ratiometric sensor for rapid, naked-eye, and anti-false-positive detection of phosalone was proposed for the first time based on the intrinsic dual-excitation N-CDs. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the linear ranges of the excitation-based ratiometric assay were 0.08~4.0 μg/mL and 4.0~14.0 μg/mL; the limit of detection was 28.5 ng/mL. The as-constructed sensor was applied to detect phosalone residue in actual samples, and results were compared with the standard gas chromatographic (GC) method.
