(MP) pneumonia in children can be challenging to treat, and the impact of MP blood infection is unclear. The present study aims to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of MP septicemia among pediatric patients.

Children hospitalized at our center for MP pneumonia between October 2017 and June 2018 were included. Healthy controls visiting our outpatient clinic for regular physical examinations were also enrolled. MP was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis of plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) samples.

Sixty-one children with MP pneumonia and 30 healthy children were included. Among children with MP infection, 31 (50.8%) were positive for MP by qPCR (19 in plasma samples, 8 in PBMC samples, and 4 in both). All healthy controls were negative for MP by qPCR.

To investigate the anticancer effect of nelfinavir (NFV) on human A549 cells.

The inhibitory effects of NFV on the proliferation of human A549 cells were assessed using a MTT assay. Apoptotic cells were observed by fluorescence microscopy following Hoechst 33342 staining. Apoptosis of A549 cells was assessed using Annexin-V/propidium iodide staining and flow cytometry. Expression levels of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and p-STAT3 were measured by western blotting. STAT3 RNA silencing was used to investigate the pro-apoptotic mechanism of NFV in A549 cells.

NFV dose-dependently suppressed proliferation of human A549 cells and induced significant apoptosis. Western blotting showed that the antitumor function of NFV might be mediated by STAT3 inhibition. A549 cell apoptosis in response to 20 µM NFV was significantly increased following STAT3 silencing. NFV significantly impeded the expression of the anti-apoptotic proteins Bcl-xL and Bcl-2, by increased the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein Cle-PARP.

Methods Focus groups and interviews were conducted with purposively selected stakeholders AI/ANs with T2D, their family members, healthcare administrators, nutrition and diabetes educators, and national content experts on AI/AN health. Two coders analyzed transcripts using the constant-comparison method. Results Key themes included (1) rural- and urban-dwelling AI/ANs experience different primary food security and associated challenges; (2) factors contributing to food insecurity extend beyond cost of healthy food; and (3) barriers to consuming fresh, healthy food include cost, preparation time, limited cooking knowledge, and challenges with gardening. Discussion Resources for AI/ANs with T2D who experience food insecurity and associated challenges to healthy eating should be tailored based on urban versus rural location and should address cost and other barriers to consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.Objectives To examine the association of perceived discrimination with participant retention and diabetes risk among American Indians and Alaska Natives. Methods Data were drawn from the Special Diabetes Program for Indians-Diabetes Prevention Demonstration Project (N = 2553). Results Perceived discrimination was significantly and negatively associated with short-term and long-term retention and diabetes risk without adjusting. After controlling for socioeconomic characteristics and clinical outcomes, perceived discrimination was not associated with retention but was significantly associated with less improvement in body mass index (BMI) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Every unit increase in the perceived discrimination score was associated with 0.14 kg/m2 less BMI reduction (95% CI [0.02, 0.26], p = 0.0183) and 1.06 mg/dl lower HDL at baseline (95% CI [0.36, 1.76], p = 0.0028). Discussion Among racialized groups, improving retention and health in lifestyle interventions may require investigating perceived discrimination and the broader context of structural racism and colonialism.Objectives Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) is an important component of blood pressure (BP) management. We assessed performance of two HBPM devices among Alaska Native and American Indian people (ANAIs). Methods We measured BP using Omron BP786 arm cuff, Omron BP654 wrist cuff, and Baum aneroid sphygmomanometer in 100 ANAIs. Performance was assessed with intraclass correlation, paired t-tests, and calibration models. Results Compared to sphygmomanometer, average BP was higher for wrist cuff (systolic = 4.8 mmHg and diastolic = 3.6 mmHg) and varied for arm cuff (systolic = -1.5 mmHg and diastolic = 2.5 mmHg). Calibration increased performance from grade B to A for arm cuff and from D to B for wrist cuff. Calibration increased false negatives and decreased false positives. Discussion The arm HBPM device is more accurate than the wrist cuff among ANAIs with hypertension. Most patients are willing to use the arm cuff when accuracy is discussed.
