The filterless PCD is expected to enhance the use of fluoride thin films in conjunction with VUV light sources for various scientific and industrial applications.Approximately 800, 000 surgical repairs are performed annually in the U.S. for debilitating injuries to ligaments and tendons of the foot, ankle, knee, wrist, elbow and shoulder, presenting a significant healthcare burden. To overcome current treatment shortcomings and advance the treatment of tendon and ligament injuries, we have developed a novel electrospun Tissue ENgineered Device (TEND), comprised of type I collagen and poly(D,L-lactide) (PDLLA) solubilized in a benign solvent, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). TEND fiber alignment, diameter and porosity were engineered to enhance cell infiltration leading to promote tissue integration and functional remodeling while providing biomechanical stability. Reparixin adsorbs blood and platelet-rich-plasma (PRP), and gradually releases growth factors over two weeks. TEND further supported cellular alignment and upregulation of tenogenic genes from clinically relevant human stem cells within three days of culture. TEND implanted in a rabbit Achilles tendon injury model showed new in situ tissue generation, maturation, and remodeling of dense, regularly oriented connective tissue in vivo. In all, TEND's organized microfibers, biological fluid and cell compatibility, strength and biocompatiblility make significant progress towards clinically translating electrospun collagen-based medical devices for improving the clinical outcomes of tendon injuries.The lateral line enables fish to efficiently sense the surrounding environment, thus assisting flow-related fish behaviours. Inspired by this phenomenon, varieties of artificial lateral line systems (ALLSs) have been developed and applied to underwater robots. This article focuses on using the pressure sensor arrays based ALLS-measured hydrodynamic pressure variations (HPVs) for estimating the relative states between an upstream oscillating fin and a downstream robotic fish. The HPVs and relative states are measured in flume experiments in which the oscillating fin and the robotic fish have been locate with upstream- downstream formation in a flume. The relative states include the relative oscillating frequency, amplitude, and offset of the upstream oscillating fin to the downstream robotic fish, the relative vertical distance, the relative yaw angle, the relative pitch angle, and the relative roll angle between the the upstream oscillating fin and the downstream robotic fish. Regression models between the ALLS-measured and the mentioned relative states are investigated, and regression models-based relative state estimations are conducted. Specifically, two criteria are proposed firstly to investigate not only the sensitivity of each pressure sensor to the variations of relative state but also the insufficiency and redundancy of the pressure sensors. And thus the pressure sensors used for regression analysis are determined. Then four typical regression methods, including random forest algorithm, support vector regression, back propagation neural network, and multiple linear regression method are used for establishing regression models between the ALLS-measured HPVs and the relative states. Then regression effects of the four methods are compared and discussed. Finally, the random forest-based method, which has the best regression effect, is used to estimate the relative yaw angle and oscillating amplitude using the ALLS-measured HPVs and exhibits excellent estimation performance.Tunas are flexible, high-performance open ocean swimmers that operate at high frequencies to achieve high swimming speeds. Most fish-like robotic systems operate at low frequencies (≤ 3 Hz) resulting in low swim speeds (≤ 1.5 body lengths per second), and the cost of transport (COT) is often one to four orders of magnitude higher than that of tunas. Furthermore, the impact of body flexibility on high-performance fish swimming remains unknown. Here we design and test a research platform based on yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) to investigate the role of body flexibility and to close the performance gap between robotic and biological systems. This single-motor platform, termed Tunabot Flex, measures 25.5 centimeters in length. Flexibility is varied through joints in the tail to produce three tested configurations. We find that increasing body flexibility improves self-propelled swimming speeds on average by 0.5 body lengths per second while reducing the minimum COT by 53%. The most flexible configuration swims 4.60 body lengths per second with a tail beat frequency of 8.0 Hz and a COT measuring 18.4 joules/kg/m. We then compare these results in addition to the midline kinematics, stride length, and Strouhal number with yellowfin tuna data. #link# The COT of Tunabot Flex's most flexible configuration is less than a half-order of magnitude greater than that of yellowfin tuna across all tested speeds. link2 Tunabot Flex provides a new baseline for the development of future bio-inspired underwater vehicles that aim to explore a fish-like, high-performance space and close the gap between engineered robotic systems and fish swimming ability.Time and history dependent magnetization has been observed in a wide variety of materials, which are collectively termed as the glassy magnetic systems. However, such systems showing similar non-equilibrium magnetic response can be microscopically very different and they can be distinguished by carefully looking into the details of the observed metastable magnetic behavior. Canonical spin glass (SG) is the most well studied member of this class and has been extensively investigated both experimentally and theoretically over the last five decades. In canonical SGs, the low temperature magnetic state obtained by cooling across the SG transition temperature in presence of an applied magnetic field is known as the field cooled (FC) state. This FC state in canonical SG is widely believed as an equilibrium state arising out of a thermodynamic second order phase transition. Here, we show that the FC state in canonical SG is not really an equilibrium state of the system. We report careful dc magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements on two canonical SG systems, AuMn (1.8%) and AgMn (1.1%). The dc magnetization in the FC state shows clear temperature dependence. In addition, the magnetization shows a distinct thermal hysteresis in the temperature regime below the SG transition temperature. On the other hand, the temperature dependence of ac susceptibility has clear frequency dispersion below SG transition in the FC state prepared by cooling the sample in the presence of a dc-bias field. We further distinguish the metastable response of the FC state of canonical SG from the metastable response of the FC state in an entirely different class of glassy magnetic system namely magnetic glass, where the non-equilibrium behavior is associated with the kinetic-arrest of a first order magnetic phase transition.Batteries are commonly considered one of the key technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions caused by the transport, power, and industry sectors. link3 We need to remember that not only the production of energy needs to be realized sustainably, but also the technologies for energy storage need to follow the green guidelines to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases effectively. To reach the sustainability goals, we have to make batteries with the performances beyond their present capabilities concerning their lifetime, reliability, and safety. To be commercially viable, the technologies, materials, and chemicals utilized in batteries must support scalability that enables cost-effective large-scale production. As lithium-ion battery (LIB) is still the prevailing technology of the rechargeable batteries for the next ten years, the most practical approach to obtain batteries with better performance is to develop the chemistry and materials utilized in LIBs-especially in terms of safety and commercialization. To this end, silicon is the most promising candidate to obtain ultra-high performance on the anode side of the cell as silicon gives the highest theoretical capacity of the anode exceeding ten times the one of graphite. By balancing the other components in the cell, it is realistic to increase the overall capacity of the battery by 100%-200%. However, the exploitation of silicon in LIBs is anything else than a simple task due to the severe material-related challenges caused by lithiation/delithiation during battery cycling. The present review makes a comprehensive overview of the latest studies focusing on the utilization of nanosized silicon as the anode material in LIBs.During the past 7th Security Framework Program the European Commission funded a research project called CATO (CBRN Crisis management, Architectures, Technologies and Operational procedures) to develop a prototype decision support system for crisis management in addition to providing a suite of guidelines for first responders and incident commanders when dealing with chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear incidents. In order to derive these guidelines a proof-of-concept experiment was setup during which several passive agent (Stable CsCl) dispersions with improvised explosive devices and vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices were carried out. Each dispersion was thoroughly characterized by a number of monitoring devices, including high-volume air samplers and size-segregated air samplers. All environmental and forensic samples were collected by the UK counter terrorism police, following strict labelling and chain-of-custody protocols. The samples were analyzed at the Belgian Nuclear Research Centernce in the case of a car-bomb will be hard or even impossible due to the high level of radioactive material remaining inside the vehicle.The theoretical investigation on structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of zinc-blende (ZB) AgI were carried out employing first principles density functional theory calculations. Thermoelectric properties then were predicted through semi-classical Boltzmann transport equations within the constant relaxation time approximation. Equilibrium lattice parameter, bulk modulus, elastic constants, and vibrational properties were calculated by using generalized gradient approximation. Calculated properties are in good agreement with available experimental values. Electronic and thermoelectric properties were investigated both with and without considering spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect which is found to have a strong influence on p-type Seebeck coefficient as well as the power factor of the ZB-AgI. By inclusion of SOC, a reduction of the band-gap and p-type Seebeck coefficients as well as the power factor was found which is the indication of that spin-orbit interaction cannot be ignored for p-type thermoelectric properties of the ZB-AgI. By using deformation potential theory for electronic relaxation time and experimentally predicted lattice thermal conductivity, we obtained a ZT value 1.69 (0.89) at 400 K for n-type (p-type) carrier concentration of 1.5 × 1018 (4.6 ×1019) cm-3 that makes ZB-AgI as a promising room temperature thermoelectric material.
