Producing high economic benefits and high grain yields with limited environmental impacts is crucial for feeding the world's growing population. Yet it remains challenging to improve the performance of one objective without creating unintended consequences for other objectives. This is especially difficult for smallholders navigating a diverse array of environmental and personal demands. This study demonstrates how combining participatory research through the Science and Technology Backyards (STB) approach with Pareto-based ranking modeling can increase smallholder production while also reducing environmental impact. Through an intensive farmer survey in a 1 × 1 km grid in Quzhou County, we demonstrate that farmers engaged in STBs performed better according to multiple objectives (i.e., optimizing overall grain yield, benefit-cost ratio, and GHG emissions, without compromising any one of these objectives) than farmer's not engaged in STBs. Moreover, we used a Pareto optimization approach (OPT) to determine thction by combining modeling with participatory research.

Crowdsourcing was recognized as having the potential to collect information rapidly, inexpensively and accurately. U-Report is a mobile empowerment platform that connects young people all over the world to information that will change their lives and influence decisions. SR-2156 Previous studies of U-Report's effectiveness highlight strengths in the timeliness, low cost and high credibility for collecting and sending information, however they also highlight areas to improve on concerning data representation. EquityTool has developed a simpler approach to assess the wealth quintiles of respondents based on fewer questions derived from large household surveys such as Multiple Indicators Cluster Surveys (MICS) and Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS).

The methodology of Equity Tool was adopted to assess the socio-economic profile of U-Reporters (ie, enrolled participants of U-Report) in Bangladesh. In times of COVID-19, U-Report in combination with the EquityTool has the potential to enhance the quality of crowdsourced data for statistical analysis.

U-Report in Bangladesh does reach the poorest quintiles while the initial recruitment skews to respondents towards better off families. It is possible to create an equitable random sub-sample of respondents from all five wealth quintiles and thus process information and data for future surveys. Moving forward, U-Reporters from the poorly represented quintiles may be incentivized to recruit peers to increase equity and representation. In times of COVID-19, U-Report in combination with the EquityTool has the potential to enhance the quality of crowdsourced data for statistical analysis.

Integration of community-level health data within Mali's web-based District Health Information System (DHIS2) is underexplored. This study conducted in Mopti, Mali examined challenges and enablers affecting integration and investigated how digital technology optimizes data quality, availability, and use.

This pre-post mixed-methods study compared community health workers' (CHWs') experiences reporting routine community-level data using the DHIS2 digital application on tablets and paper forms. 141 CHWs participated in quantitative surveys and focus group discussions at baseline and endline. In-depth interviews were conducted with 18 and eight CHW supervisors and 12 and 11 other stakeholders at baseline and endline, respectively. We calculated changes in CHW performance, and job satisfaction among intervention and comparison groups using the difference-in-difference (DID) estimator controlling for baseline characteristics. Routine longitudinal DHIS2 data described timeliness and completeness of CHW reportinss and completeness before and after the intervention, with little or no change over time.

Pakistan has been experiencing several immunization related challenges. The supply chain management information system (MIS) is considered an important component of immunization services as it can improve visibility in key areas such as vaccine shortages or wastage. This study assessed the effectiveness of the Visibility and Analytics Network (VAN) approach in improving vaccine supply and availability of stocks by comparing the situation in intervention and non-intervention districts in Sindh province of Pakistan.

We utilized a quantitative and qualitative approach to collect data to assess the VAN approach in two districts of Sindh province in Pakistan. The data were collected between August and October 2017. VAN is a systematic monitoring system which measures the performance of vaccine supply chain management based on a set of indicators. We assessed storage facilities of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) in Sindh and interviewed personnel involved using a pre-tested data collection tool. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza are prevalent seasonal community viruses. Although not completely understood, SARS-CoV-2 may have the same means of transmission. Preventive social measures aimed at preventing SARS-CoV-2 spread could impact transmission of other respiratory viruses as well. The aim of this study is to report the detection of RSV and influenza during the period of social distancing due to COVID-19 pandemic in a heavily affected community.
