Best Coffee Machine Pods
Pod coffee machines make it simple to get your caffeine fix in the morning. Unlike a traditional machine they offer pre-packed pods of ground coffee or espresso to make the process faster.
Choose a pod coffee machine that allows you to alter the temperature and cup size. Make sure the machine is compatible with reused pods.
1. Nespresso Vertuo
Nespresso is the market leader in pod brewing and a popular choice for espresso fans. The company's machines and capsules are highly rated for both quality and sustainability. The capsules are made from 80 percent recyclable materials and are compostable. They also contain less plastic than traditional coffee bags, and have a less carbon footprint. Nespresso also partners with organizations that are certified green to encourage fair labor practices and responsible farming practices.
The Nespresso Vertuo line includes several machines that make a rich and delicious cup of coffee or espresso that has a great crema. The VertuoPlus X and VertuoPlus Deluxe models offer advanced features such as automatic heating of milk and customizable beverage settings. They are simple to use and feature a sleek style that looks great on your kitchen counter.
Both the X and Deluxe models have a large water reservoir and a slender machine body. They come with an innovative extraction technique called Centrifusion that utilizes up to 7,000 rotations per minute to make espresso or coffee. This process helps to create a smooth and consistent crema with a high degree of saturation, even in smaller cups.
Nespresso's capsules may be a little more expensive than third-party compatible pods that are sold in supermarkets and many online retailers, but they come with a an excellent selection of flavors and intensities to choose from. The company regularly releases limited-edition products as well. The company's machines are also very user-friendly, and the Vertuoline has fewer steps than the first Nespresso line which only produces espresso.
The Vertuoline also has two sizes of capsules -- the smaller espresso size and the larger lungo size -- for those who prefer smaller drinks. The larger mug and alto capsules are suitable for hearty and mug-sized drinks that require a more intensely roasted cup of coffee. The Nespresso Vertuoline makes a great cup of drip coffee, unlike some of the other pod machines that we tested.
2. Illy X7.1
This pod coffee maker is a sleek, high-spec machine made with tough and appealing materials. It's a bit more expensive than the other models we tried, but it provides high-quality, reliable performance and an attractive design that can be a perfect fit for any kitchen.
The X7.1 uses a new patented system which reads the bespoke barcode on each capsule to identify it. It then pre-wets, infuses and dispenses the correct amount of water in a controlled manner. This is a major benefit for those who prefer hassle-free automation. However, it could be a problem for those who prefer to alter settings and select their own brew strength or size. The machine can serve espresso drinks double espresso drinks mugs, granlongo, and alto drinks, all topped with the smooth crema.
In addition to its technology for brewing in addition to its brewing technology, the X7.1 has a number of other features that make it stand out. For instance, it is one of the only coffee machines we've tested that offers the ability to adjust the height of the drip tray to optimise the dimensions and shape of the coffee mug. It comes with a stainless steel milk jug to make cappuccinos or lattes. coffeee is also equipped with an energy-saving sleep mode and pod holders that are detachable to help with cleaning.
It's compatible with the majority of Keurig K-Cups and Nespresso capsules as well as Bruvi's B-Pods. These pods are different from K-Cups and other popular pods as they contain ground coffee instead of a tea bag and they contain more caffeine than regular coffee. The Bruvi is also compatible and can be programmed to brew according to a set schedule. It also comes with a handy steam wand that can be used to make frothy lattes and cappuccinos.
3. Grind One
If you're not a fan of Nespresso pods made of plastic or are looking for something that isn't quite as bulky, then the Stockholm-designed Grind One may be the best option for you. Two members of Real Homes' team have tested it in their kitchens, and both are awestruck by it. It's a sleek stainless steel geometric machine, that looks super stylish and is easy to use. Simply insert the pod, choose whether you want a lungo or a short express, and press the button. The light that flashes will inform you whether it's brewing or done, and then the coffee begins to pour out. There is no milk carafe or steam wand, but you can add hot or cold milk to your coffee however you'd like.
This machine is designed to work with Grind’s own compostable, recyclable and reusable pods. This means that you're not only decreasing the amount of coffee you waste (which could take hundreds of years to degrade) but the pods themselves don't contain plastic and are organic. They cost around 50p each, and you can dispose of them in your garden compost or in your food waste bin when they are empty.
The Grind One is PS275, and you can add a bundle with a milk frother to it for an additional PS325. It is more expensive than most Nespresso pod machines, but it's a sleek, well-designed, and versatile machine. It's also the most compact of the bunch, so it won't take up enough countertop space, and it comes with a raised drip tray that latches onto a series of notches next to the waste bin for height adjustment.
4. Grind 2
This pod maker is ideal for those who enjoy having a quick cup of coffee. It can be used to brew a short shot or a long shot using three different extraction settings and temperature. Our coffee lover was impressed by its ability to create an excellent espresso. Its temperature and crema (which should be a dark chestnut color that lasts for the last sip and is a warm shade of brown) were perfect. Its sleek design, as well its durable and attractive materials, made it stand out from the other brands.
Our coffee aficionado also tested the Grind One for its ease of use. The robust switch is pleasant to use, and offers the possibility of programming your preferred long or short shot. It also has a clear display. You can also choose to automatically pour hot water in your coffee that helps the ground settle and improves the taste of your drink. A milk frother is also included, making this pod coffee maker an excellent all-rounder.
These machines also take out the sloppy parts of espresso making like grinding or dosing and tamping of the ground beans. This reduces the number of items that need to be cleaned up and reused and makes them a more suitable option for those with limited kitchen space. If you're looking to broaden your options, you can use an additional milk frother to make cappuccinos and lattes. You can also opt for a manual press, such as the Aeropress which has a lower carbon footprint and a richer flavor than a machine. It's a bit more work, so it's not suitable for all.
5. Lavazza Idola
Contrary to the more expensive Lavazza Voicy pod coffee maker, this model doesn't include a milk frother but is ideal for anyone who likes an espresso, ristretto or caffe lungo. It is also one of quietest machines, so you can enjoy your morning cup while the kids are still sleeping.
You can program a cup size that is suitable for your taste, and you can also select to increase the temperature to help your beverage go through more quickly by pressing one button. It's easy to keep on top of maintenance too with alerts that notify you when the capsule container needs emptying or the water tank is empty.
The machine does not froth milk, but it can be used to make cappuccinos or flat whites with a separate container. There are a lot of positive reviews from buyers on Amazon and at John Lewis. They laud the quiet operation and various options offered by the machine, including different lengths of brews as well as the capacity to hold capsules that are used.
While there aren't a huge number of reviews from customers however, the general consensus is that this is a fantastic value pod coffee machine for those who want an easy set-up. It's a little more pricey than the Nespresso Vertuo Pop, but it comes with excellent tasting Lavazza pods and is among the quietest machines on the market. If you want to make a variety of coffees, we recommend you look into one of our top choices. For more information, read our full Lavazza Idola review.
