The aim of this study is to find out the practice patterns, awareness, and knowledge about psychodermatology in Albanian dermatologists. A survey questionnaire was sent to Albanian dermatologists by mail and distributed during a regional dermatology conference. The dermatologists were requested to provide information on demographic variables, level of training, referral patterns, degree of comfort in managing psychocutaneous disorders, awareness of community resources, and interest in continuing medical educational activities. A total of 75 surveys were mailed in and 41 were returned for analysis. Only 13.2% of dermatologists reported clear understanding of psychodermatology and 41.5% reported being somewhat comfortable in diagnosing and treating psychocutaneous disorders, however requiring further help. Psoriasis, prurigo, and acne were the most common diagnoses associated with psychiatric involvement. The most common diagnoses referred by dermatologists to psychiatrists were psoriasis, prurigo, acne, and trichotillomania. Almost all 98% of dermatologists were not aware of any community resources. About 70% of dermatologists expressed interest in attending continuing medical educational activities. Albanian dermatologist have significant gap in the knowledge, training, awareness, and in treating psychocutaneous disease. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Colletotrichum graminicola is a hemibiotrophic fungus that causes anthracnose leaf blight (ALB) and anthracnose stalk rot (ASR) in maize. Despite substantial economic losses caused by these diseases, the defence mechanisms against this pathogen remain poorly understood. Several hormones are suggested to aid in defence against C. graminicola, such as jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA), but supporting genetic evidence was not reported. Green leaf volatiles (GLVs) are a group of well-characterized volatiles that induce JA biosynthesis in maize and are known to function in defence against necrotrophic pathogens. Information regarding the role of GLVs and JA in interactions with (hemi)biotrophic pathogens remains limited. To functionally elucidate GLVs and JA in defence against a hemibiotrophic pathogen, we tested GLV- and JA-deficient mutants, lox10 and opr7 opr8, respectively, for resistance to ASR and ALB and profiled jasmonates and SA in their stalks and leaves throughout infection. Both mutants were resistant and generally displayed elevated levels of SA and low amounts of jasmonates, especially at early stages of infection. Pretreatment with GLVs restored susceptibility of lox10 mutants, but not opr7 opr8 mutants, which coincided with complete rescue of JA levels. Exogenous methyl jasmonate restored susceptibility in both mutants when applied before inoculation, whereas methyl salicylate did not induce further resistance in either of the mutants, but did induce mutant-like resistance in the wild type. Collectively, this study reveals that GLVs and JA contribute to maize susceptibility to C. graminicola due to suppression of SA-related defences. © 2020 The Authors. Molecular Plant Pathology published by British Society for Plant Pathology and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Urea amidolyase (UA), a bifunctional enzyme that is widely distributed in bacteria, fungi, algae, and plants, plays a pivotal role in the recycling of nitrogen in the biosphere. Its substrate urea is ultimately converted to ammonium, via successive catalysis at the C-terminal urea carboxylase (UC) domain and followed by the N-terminal allophanate hydrolyse (AH) domain. Although our previous studies have shown that Kluyveromyces lactis UA (KlUA) functions efficiently as a homodimer, the architecture of the full-length enzyme remains unresolved. Thus how the biotin carboxyl carrier protein (BCCP) domain is transferred within the UC domain remains unclear. Here we report the structures of full-length KlUA in its homodimer form in three different functional states by negatively-stained single-particle electron microscopy. CP-673451 datasheet We report here that the ADP-bound structure with or without urea shows two possible locations of BCCP with preferred asymmetry, and that when BCCP is attached to the carboxyl transferase domain of one monomer, it is attached to the biotin carboxylase domain in the second domain. Based on this observation, we propose a BCCP-swinging model for biotin-dependent carboxylation mechanism of this enzyme. © 2020 The Protein Society.AIMS Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We examined the characteristics, management and outcomes of patients with CKD in the All New Zealand Acute Coronary Syndrome Quality Improvement (ANZACS-QI) national registry. METHODS The cohort comprised New Zealand (NZ) patients with an acute coronary syndrome undergoing coronary angiography between January 2013 and December 2016. Patients were categorized according to their stage of CKD. Outcomes included all-cause and cause-specific mortality and hospitalization with myocardial infarction (MI), stroke and major bleeding. RESULTS Of the 20 604 patients, 20.3% had normal renal function, with 53.3%, 23.3%, 1.7% and 1.4% having CKD stages 2, 3, 4 and 5 CKD, respectively. Patients with severe CKD were more likely to be Māori or Pacific and live in an area with greater socioeconomic deprivation. Death, recurrent MI or stroke, and major bleeding all increased incrementally with each worsening stage of CKD severity. Compared with those with normal renal function, patients with stage 5 CKD had a much higher all-cause (hazard ratio [HR] 16.41, 95% CI 13.06-20.61), cardiovascular (HR 16.38, 95% CI 12.17-22.04) and non-cardiovascular mortality (HR 13.66 9, 95% CI.56-19.51). In addition, patients with stage 5 CKD were at a higher risk of recurrent MI or stroke (HR 4.73, 95% CI 3.86-5.80) and bleeding (HR 5.84, 95% CI 4.39-7.76). CONCLUSION CKD was associated with increased mortality and a high incidence of morbidity in patients undergoing coronary angiography in New Zealand. Initiatives to understand and improve outcomes in this group of patients are urgently needed. © 2020 Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology.
