In all cases, the facial muscles showed earliest sign of recovery at 2-5 months. These movements were first noticed on the cheek musculature when the patients activated their masseter muscle. Eye movements started appearing at 6-9 months (in 3 cases) and forehead movements at 18 months (in 1 case). According to the modified House-Brackmann grading scale, one patient had Grade I function, two patients had Grade II function, and three had Grade V function. There was no morbidity except one patient who underwent interposition graft had numbness in the ear lobule. None of the patients could feel the loss of masseteric nerve function. Masseteric facial nerve anastomosis is a versatile, powerful early facial dynamic reanimation tool with almost negligible morbidity compared to other neurotization procedures for patients with complete facial nerve paralysis. find more © Association of Otolaryngologists of India 2019.External auditory canal cholesteatoma is a rare disease. Main symptoms of this entity are ear discharge and dull chronic ear pain and significant findings are bony erosion of the external canal with keratin debris accumulation. Inadequate diagnosis and delay in the treatment of this condition can leads to serious complications. We are presenting our experience of eight patients of spontaneous EACC treated by surgical management. As the spontaneous EACC is a rare condition, the aim of the study is to share the experience of diagnosis and management of spontaneous EACC. © Association of Otolaryngologists of India 2019.Cochlear implantation (CI) is used for rehabilitation of children with bilateral severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. Recently, treatment of such children has been influenced by diagnostic technological advances. Infants and toddlers are now increasingly included for CI. The primary aim of this study was to determine the effects of 'age at CI' on CI outcome. The primary aim of this study was to determine the effects of 'age at CI' on CI outcome. In this prospective study at a tertiary care centre, we evaluated 50 cochlear implanted children from October 2011 to March 2013. The case group consists of 15 (30%) children who underwent CI at more than 5 years of age and control group consisted of 35 (70%) children who underwent CI at less than or equal to 5 years age. All patients received auditory and speech rehabilitation and we evaluated their auditory perception outcomes 1 year post CI, the children were assessed by categories of auditory performance (CAP) and meaningful auditory integration scale (Mists of India 2019.The primary management of the rare tumor chordoma is always surgical. This study indicates the advantage of endoscopic approach for clival chordoma resection. This is a Retrospective case series of 7 endoscopically operated clival chordoma patients between May 2015 and April 2018 in our tertiary care hospital. 5 patients presented with primary disease and 2 were recurrent disease cases. Endoscopic endonasal transphenoidal approach with wide clearance of margins of tumor were performed in all 7 cases. High energy photon radiotherapy were delivered to all. All patients with primary disease as well as recurrent disease had no evidence of disease 24-32 months post surgery. Endoscopic endonasal transphenoidal approach for clival chordoma provides a safe and reliable tumor resection. This less invasive surgery can be considered as an alternative to traditional surgical technique with reduced morbidity. This approach represents a combination of various endoscopic surgical techniques which are minimally invasive and can be applied to ventral skull base surgery. © Association of Otolaryngologists of India 2019.The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is any correlation between dacryocystitis with deviated nasal septum and sinusitis. A retrospective study of 50 patients who were diagnosed with dacryocystitis were included in the study. The patients included were operated between July 2018 and February 2017. All patients were assessed and operated by a single surgeon. We found in the study that 38 patients had deviated nasal septum to the diseased side and were operated for better achievement of surgical field and also for relieving the symptom of nasal obstruction in those patients. It was also found that those who were operated for deviated nasal septum were found to have better success rate post-operatively. The association between dacryocystitis and deviated nasal septum was found to be statistically significant (0.000236). However, there no such significant association found between that of sinusitis and dacryocystitis. © Association of Otolaryngologists of India 2019.To study use of ultrasonic wave bone cutting technique (piezotome) in cochlear implant surgery by veria technique. The Piezoelectric device is a bone cutting tool that transmits ultrasonic high frequency vibrations through a metallic tip to selectively cut bone while sparing the surrounding soft tissues. We have used the piezo tools instead of the perforator in over 50 cases of Cochlear Implant by the non mastoidectomy Veria technique [which uses a specially designed hand piece perforator with a guide (Kiratzidisa et al. in ORL J Otorhinolaryngol Relat Spec 64413-416, 2002)]. These tools are helpful in straightening the posterior bony canal wall, making the well for Implant bed, making space for excess electrodes and removing bone tissue close to dura without risk of injury to dura. Though use of Piezo tools in various otologic surgeries has been described but we feel the piezo tools will be an important tool in a CI surgeon's armament. © Association of Otolaryngologists of India 2019.Microdebrider adenoidectomy and Coblation adenoidectomy are the two new techniques available for adenoidectomy these days. The advantages of endoscopic power assisted adenoidectomy over cold steel adenoidectomy has been well established in the literature. As adenoidectomy is one of the most common paediatric surgical procedure there is always a concern to improve the outcomes and make postoperative experience more pleasant for the paediatric population. Cost difference between a coblator wand and microdebrider blade is always a confounding factor in decision making. The present study was conducted to compare both the techniques of adenoidectomy in terms of certain intraoperative and post operative parameters. The present study was a prospective randomized single blind study conducted in a university hospital on 140 subjects. The patients diagnosed with chronic adenoiditis grade 3-4 were randomly allocated in two groups after following the exclusion and inclusion criteria. the adenoidectomy in two groups; Microdebrider group and Coblation group were compared in terms of intraoperative time, post operative pain score; intraoperative bleeding, surgical field and some common complications.
