The asynchronous dynamics allows to obtain multi-phasic rhythms with phase durations close to their biological prototypes. The perspectives of discrete modeling in biological research are discussed in the conclusion.Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a slowly progressive, locally aggressive fibroblastic tumor which can be misdiagnosed in the early stage. Reflectance confocal microscopic features of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans has been scarcely described in the literature. We described the dermoscopic and reflectance confocal microscopic findings of 12 × 15 cm sized tumoral lesion of 45-year-old man.CT colonography (CTC) is the radiological examination of choice for the diagnosis of colorectal neoplasia. Faecal tagging is considered a mandatory part of bowel preparation. However, the colonic mucosa, obscured by tagged residue, is not accessible to endoluminal 3D views and requires time-consuming 2D evaluation. Electronic cleansing (EC) software algorithms can overcome this limitation by digitally subtracting tagged residue from the colonic lumen. Ideally, this enables a seamless 3D endoluminal evaluation. Despite this benefit, EC is a potential source of a wide range of artefacts. Accurate EC requires proper CTC examination technique and faecal tagging. The digital subtraction process has been shown to affect the relevant morphological features of both colonic anatomy and colonic lesions, if submerged under faecal residue. This article summarises the potential effects of EC on CTC imaging, the consequences for reporting and patient management, and strategies to avoid pitfalls. Furthermore, potentially negative effects on clinical reporting and patient management are shown, and problem-solving techniques, as well as recommendations for the appropriate use of EC techniques, are presented. Radiologists using EC should be familiar with EC-related effects on polyp size and also with correct measurement techniques.Cardiac adaptations to exercise on an elite level have been well studied. Strain analysis by speckle tracking echocardiography has emerged as a tool for sports cardiologists to assess the nature of hypertrophy in athletes' hearts. In prior studies, strain values generally did not change in physiological adaptations to exercise but were reduced in pathological hypertrophy. However, research in this field has focused almost solely on male athletes. Purpose of the present study is to investigate strain values in the hearts of female elite athletes in football and volleyball. In this cross-sectional study echocardiography was performed on 19 female elite football-players, 16 female elite volleyball-players and 16 physically inactive controls. Conventional echocardiographic data was documented as well as left ventricular longitudinal, radial and circumferential strain values gained by speckle tracking echocardiography. The hearts of the female athletes had a thicker septal wall, a larger overall mass and larger atria than the hearts in the control group. Global longitudinal, radial and circumferential strain values did not differ between the athletes and controls or between sporting disciplines. No correlation between septal wall thickness and global strain values could be documented. Cardiac adaptations to elite level exercise in female volleyball and football players do not influence global strain values. Nutlin-3a purchase This has been documented for male athletes of several disciplines. The present study adds to the very limited control-group comparisons of left ventricular strain values in elite female athletes. The findings indicate that global strain values can be used when assessing the cardiac health in female athletes. As it is unclear if and how long DNA evidence can persist on submerged skin, we examined the potential for recovery of touch DNA and blood stain DNA from skin samples immersed in different aquatic environments and temperatures for forensic purposes in this proof-of-concept study. We used pig skin, either smeared with human blood or held firmly for 30 s by two test-persons, before immersing it in either cold, room-temperature or warm water as well as in a stream and a pond for up to seven days prior to DNA testing. The samples were then typed at 16 STR loci. Cold water samples yielded the most promising results, as shown by the recovery of the full set of 16 reproducible STR loci from the touch DNA sample of one test-person after 7 days. For blood stains, we were able to recover all 16 reproducible STRs after 2 days. Room-temperature water and warm water yielded varying results for both blood stain DNA and touch DNA. For pond and stream samples, DNA recovery was possible only within two days. While the pond and stream samples were at relatively cold temperatures, DNA recovery may have been affected by the presence of water insects and snails in the pond and mud in the stream. Our findings show the potential of using immersed samples, particularly those immersed in cold water, as we could detect a complete DNA profile from blood stains and from touch DNA after several days. Our study opens the way for future in-depth studies, examining larger datasets and a wider range of conditions.PURPOSE To identify the genetic cause of patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) and male infertility from two unrelated Han Chinese families. METHODS We conducted whole-exome sequencing of three individuals with PCD and male infertility from two unrelated Chinese families, and performed a targeted look-up for DNAAF6 variants in our previously reported cohort of 442 individuals (219 with isolated oligoasthenospermia and 223 fertile controls). Ultrastructural and immunostaining analyses of patients' spermatozoa were performed. The pathogenicity of the variants was validated using patient's spermatozoa and HEK293T cells. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment was conducted in two patients. RESULTS We identified one novel hemizygous frameshift variant (NM_173494, c.319_329del p.R107fs) of DNAAF6 gene (previously named PIH1D3) in family 1 and one novel hemizygous missense variant (c.290G>T p.G97V) in family 2. No hemizygous deleterious variants in DNAAF6 were detected in the control cohort of 442 individuals.
