1 to 13.8%. Increasing aw increased the antioxidant activity of maltose. For example, 1.1% maltose increased both hydroperoxides and hexanal lag phases by 9 days at an aw of 0.2, but increased hydroperoxide lag phase by 24 days and hexanal lag phase by 15 days at an aw of 0.7. Gluten was able to inhibit lipid oxidation with activity increasing with increasing aw while casein showed minimal antioxidant impact. Antioxidant activity of gluten decreased when its sulfhydryl groups were blocked by N-ethylmaleimide suggesting that cysteine was an important antioxidant component of gluten. Adjusting water activity and addition of reducing sugars and gluten could be strategies to increase oxidative stability of low moisture crackers. this website This study evaluates the influences on food handlers' intention to conduct safe handling behaviours in food service settings in Brazil and the United Kingdom, focusing on Optimistic bias (OB). Although OB has been identified in food handlers in other studies, this is the first study evaluating the role of OB in determining behavioural intention. Three hundred participants, from the United Kingdom (n = 150) and Brazil (n = 150), completed a Theory of Planned Behaviour - based questionnaire, including additional questions about OB. For Brazilian food handlers, Attitude had a significant influence on Behavioural Intention followed by Subjective Norm, while Perceived Behavioural Control and OB did not significantly influence Behavioural Intention. For the United Kingdom, Perceived Behavioural Control had the largest influence, followed by Attitude, and then OB. Results suggest that cultural differences may influence predictors of behavioural intention, and that OB can contribute to predicting engagement in safe handling behaviours. Results contribute to a better understanding of the influences on food safety related behaviours. The aim of this study was to recategorise body mass index (BMI) in order to classify patients according to their risk of semen abnormalities. Patients (n=20563) presenting at an andrology laboratory were classified into five groups according to BMI underweight (BMI 42kg m-2. The BMI recategorisation in this study has andrological predictive power. Two months after the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the possibility of established and widespread community transmission in the European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA) is becoming more likely. We provide scenarios for use in preparedness for a possible widespread epidemic. The EU/EEA is moving towards the 'limited sustained transmission' phase. We propose actions to prepare for potential mitigation phases and coordinate efforts to protect the health of citizens. The need for timely establishment of diagnostic assays arose when Germany was confronted with the first travel-associated outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Europe. We describe our laboratory experiences during a large contact tracing investigation, comparing previously published real-time RT-PCR assays in different PCR systems and a commercial kit. We found that assay performance using the same primers and probes with different PCR systems varied and the commercial kit performed well.Facing the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), high-volume respiratory testing is demanded in laboratories worldwide. We evaluated the performance of a molecular assay for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 on a high-throughput platform, the cobas 6800, using the 'open channel' for integration of a laboratory-developed assay. We observed good analytical performance in clinical specimens. The fully automated workflow enables high-throughput testing with minimal hands-on time, while offering fast and reliable results. An outbreak of gastroenteritis with 83 cases occurred at a conference venue in November 2017 in Halland County, Sweden. Stool samples from two venue visitors and a symptomatic secondary case attributed to household transmission were PCR-positive for the ipaH gene, a target found in both Shigella spp. and enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC). EIEC was isolated from stool samples and whole genome sequencing analysis confirmed EIEC O96H19 to be the aetiological agent. A cohort study was conducted among venue attendees and employees and the findings implicated contaminated leafy greens as the vehicle of infection, however, no microbiological evidence could support the study results. Here, we report the investigation into the first recorded EIEC outbreak in Sweden and illustrate the challenges associated with the differential laboratory diagnostics of Shigella/EIEC in an outbreak setting. In the WHO European Region, COVID-19 surveillance was implemented 27 January 2020. We detail the first European cases. As at 21 February, nine European countries reported 47 cases. Among 38 cases studied, 21 were linked to two clusters in Germany and France, 14 were infected in China. Median case age was 42 years; 25 were male. Late detection of the clusters' index cases delayed isolation of further local cases. As at 5 March, there were 4,250 cases. The goal of this study is to provide quantitative data on the ideal volume for intramuscular (IM) injections into the semimembranosusmuscle of guinea pigs weighing between 320 to 410 grams. This evaluation comprised 2 experiments. The first was to assess dispersion leakage of intramuscularly injected iohexol, a radiocontrast agent commonly used in Computed Tomography (CT), based on analysis of in vivo imaging. The second used varying volumes of intramuscularly injected sodium chloride (0.9% NaCl) to assess pain and pathology associated with IM injection. Hartley guinea pigs were injected IM with varying volumes of either iohexol or sodium chloride (150, 300, 500, 1000 and 1500 μL). In the iohexol experiment, resultssuggest IM volumes of 150 and 300 μL remain within the target muscle. In the experiment using sodium chloride, pain and pathology did not increase as IM volume increased. The pathology noted was related to needle tract through the musculature rather than the volume size of the injectate. The results did not reveal a correlation between volume of IM 0.
