Osteoclasts' inhibition in BB-filled sockets led to decreased bone resorption markers and reduced bone formation to a greater extent than that observed in osteoclasts' inhibition with natural healing. BB displays long-term biologically active properties, despite a naive osseous histological appearance. These include activation of osteoclasts, which in turn promotes osseous remodeling and maturation of ossified bone. The Archaea domain was recognized as a separate phylogenetic lineage in the tree of life nearly 3 decades ago. It is now known as part of the human microbiome; however, given that its roles in oral sites are still poorly understood, this review aimed to establish the current level of evidence regarding archaea in the oral cavity to guide future research, providing insights on the present knowledge about the human oral archaeome. A scoping review was conducted with the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews checklist. Five electronic databases were searched, as well as gray literature. Two independent reviewers performed the selection and characterization of the studies. Clinical studies were included when the target population consisted of humans of any age who were donors of samples from the oral cavity. A qualitative analysis was performed, based on the type of oral site and by considering the methods employed for archaeal identification and taxonomy, including the DNA extraction protocols, primers, and probes used. Fifty articles were included in the final scoping review, published from 1987 to 2019. Most studies sampled periodontal sites. Methanogens were the most abundant archaea in those sites, and their presence could be associated with other periodontal pathogens. No consistent relationship with different disease conditions was observed in studies that evaluated the microbiota surviving in endodontic sites. Few articles analyzed the presence of archaea in dental caries, saliva, or tongue microbiota, as well as in archaeologic samples, also showing a relationship with healthy microbiota. Archaea have been detected in different oral niches of individuals from diverse geographic locations and clinical conditions, suggesting potential roles in oral diseases. Methodological limitations may hamper our current knowledge about archaeal diversity and prevalence in oral samples, and future research with diversified methodological approaches may lead to a better comprehension of the human oral archaeome. The introduction of ultrawide field imaging has allowed the visualization of approximately 82% of the total retinal area compared to only 30% using 7-standard field Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy (ETDRS) photography. This substantially wider field of view, while useful in many retinal vascular diseases, is particularly important in diabetic retinopathy where eyes with predominantly peripheral lesions or PPL have been shown to have significantly greater progression rates compared to eyes without PPL. In telemedicine settings, ultrawide field imaging has substantially reduced image ungradable rates and increased rate of disease identification allowing care to be delivered more effectively. Furthermore, the use of ultrawide field fluorescein angiography allows the visualization of significantly more diabetic retinal lesions and allows more accurate quantification of total retinal nonperfusion, with potential implications in the management of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. The focus of this paper is to review the current role of ultrawide field imaging in diabetic retinopathy and its possible future role in innovations for retinal image analysis such as artificial intelligence and vessel caliber measurements.Traditional methodologies of conventional drinking water treatment are unable to remove some chemical compounds, such as those that cause odor and taste in drinking water. The present work aims to evaluate the efficiency of advanced oxidations processes, using UV radiation, O3 and O3 + UV in the degradation of geosmin (GSM) and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) in synthetic samples. learn more The efficiency of the processes was monitored by Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry using solid phase microextration technique. Experiments were carried out for 45 min with samplings every 15 min. The degradation results showed that UV radiation alone was not efficient for the degradation of both compounds. The fasted decay was observed by the combined use of O3 and UV with an ozone concentration of 15.84 mg L-1. Under these conditions, the final concentration of GSM was below the limit of quantification, so that approximately 99% of the initial concentration was degraded, while 2-MIB was degraded by 95%. With the same O3 concentration without the use of UV radiation, 63% and 65.7% of MIB and GSM, respectively, were removed. Higher efficiency of the treatment was observed with a higher O3 concentration which allows a shorter reaction time.Purpose Treatment of pneumothorax involves conservative treatment and surgery. The aim of this study was to assess the best approach of initial treatment and long-term outcomes of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for primary spontaneous pneumothorax in pediatric patients. Patients and Methods From January 2009 until June 2019, 36 patients younger than the age of 18 who were treated for spontaneous pneumothorax were included into retrospective study. Patients were divided into 2 groups, non-VATS and VATS, depending on the way they were treated. The groups were compared regarding demographic and clinical data and outcomes of treatment (the length of hospitalization, the frequency of postoperative complications, and reoperations). Results Out of 36 patients, there were 24 boys and 12 girls with median age of 16.5 years. Median duration of hospitalization was 8 days. Eight patients were treated by observation and 28 by chest tube insertion. In 14 patients with spontaneous pneumothorax, VATS was performed [indications were persistent air leak in 8 (57%) and recurrent pneumothorax in 6 (43%) children]. Patients who underwent surgery had significantly higher length of hospitalization (P less then .001) and lower rate of recurrences (P = .003) than those who did not. In 12 (86%) patients, blebs were found intraoperative, and in all of them, pleurodesis was performed. Duration of chest tube insertion was significantly longer in patients who experienced recurrent pneumothorax (P less then .001). Conclusions VATS is successful, efficient, and safe method of treatment for spontaneous pneumothorax, due to its significantly lower rate of recurrence in comparison with chest tube insertion.
