Research on the biogenic-specific polymorphism and morphology of carbonate has been gaining momentum in the fields of biomineralization and industrial engineering in recent years. We report the nucleation of carbonate particles on bacterial cell templates to produce a novel dumbbell-like morphology which was assembled by needle-like crystals of magnesium calcite or aragonite radiating out from both ends of the template bacterium. Mature dumbbell-like structures had a tendency to break apart in the central template region, which was made up mostly of weak amorphous carbonate. Further crystal growth, especially at the template region, transformed the broken pieces into spherulites. Rod-like cell templates were essential for the formation of dumbbell-like morphologies, and we propose a possible formation mechanism of the dumbbell-like morphology. Our findings provide new perspectives on the morphological formation mechanism in biomineralization systems and may have a potential significance in assembling composite materials suitable for industrial applications.BACKGROUND End-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) is a non-invasive method giving information about the perfusion, ventilation, and metabolic condition of patients. The correlation was studied here between the metabolic (pH, bicarbonate) values and EtCO2 during the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). CASE REPORT A 23-year-old male patient with diabetes mellitus was admitted to the emergency department (ED) with the complaints of nausea, vomiting, and fever. The patient with a diagnosis of DKA was continuously monitored with EtCO2; EtCO2 was correlated with serum bicarbonate (HCO3; r = 0.96; P less then .001) and pH (r = 0.93; P less then .001). CONCLUSION Continuous EtCO2 monitoring should be considered by emergency physicians in the metabolic monitoring of the patients as it is an easy-to-use, non-invasive, and cost-effective method that provides instant and reliable information.BACKGROUND Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common developmental disorder, often persisting into adulthood. Whilst medication is first-line treatment for ADHD, there is a need for evidence-based non-pharmacological treatment options for adults with ADHD who are either still experiencing significant symptoms or for those who have made the informed choice not to start medication. METHODS We systematically searched PsycINFO, MEDLINE (Ovid), EMBASE, CINAHL and CENTRAL for randomised controlled trials of non-pharmacological treatments for ADHD in adults. After screening of titles and abstracts, full text articles were reviewed, data extracted and bias assessed using a study proforma. RESULTS There were 32 eligible studies with the largest number of studies assessing cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). CBT consisted of either group, internet or individual therapy. CONCLUSIONS The majority found an improvement in ADHD symptoms with CBT treatment. Additionally, mindfulness and cognitive remediation have evidence as effective interventions for the core symptoms of ADHD and there is evidence for the use of group dialectical behavioural therapy and hypnotherapy. However, evidence for these is weaker due to small numbers of participants and limitations due to the lack of suitable control conditions, and a high risk of bias.Conventional ambulatory heart rhythm monitoring is limited in its ability to provide rapid diagnosis of arrhythmias in athletes participating in water or high-intensity sports. This case report is of a 17-year-old female competitive swimmer who underwent loop recorder implantation with Confirm Rx™ ICM 3500 (Abbott, Minneapolis, MN) to monitor for arrhythmias during swimming. The purpose of this case report is to describe the utility of implantable loop recorders in arrhythmia diagnosis and symptom evaluation in water sport athletes.Influenza A virus is a serious human pathogen that assembles enveloped virions on the plasma membrane of the host cell. The pleiomorphic morphology of influenza A virus, represented by spherical, elongated, or filamentous particles, is important for the spread of the virus in nature. Using fixative protocols for sample preparation and negative staining electron microscopy, we found that the recombinant A/WSN/33 (H1N1) (rWSN) virus, a strain considered to be strictly spherical, may produce filamentous particles when amplified in the allantoic cavity of chicken embryos. find more In contrast, the laboratory WSN strain and the rWSN virus amplified in Madin-Darby canine kidney cells exhibited a spherical morphology. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) suggested a rare Ser126Cys substitution in the M1 protein of rWSN, which was confirmed by the mass spectrometric analysis. No structurally relevant substitutions were found by NGS in other proteins of rWSN. Bioinformatics algorithms predicted a neutral structural effect of the Ser126Cys mutation. The mrWSN_M1_126S virus generated after the introduction of the reverse Cys126Ser substitution exhibited a similar host-dependent partially filamentous phenotype. We hypothesize that a shortage of some as-yet-undefined cellular components involved in virion budding and membrane scission may result in the appearance of filamentous particles in the case of usually "nonfilamentous" virus strains.OBJECTIVE Symptoms of depression and anxiety are common in neuroendocrine tumor (NET), yet controversy exists over whether serotonin-mediated antidepressants (SAs) are safe in this population. We sought to address this knowledge gap. METHOD Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review to identify NET patients who were prescribed SA. RESULTS We identified 15 articles, reporting on 161 unique patients, 72 with carcinoid syndrome (CS) and 89 without. There was substantial agreement between reviewers at the full-text stage (κ = 0.69). Three of the articles, all with low risk of bias, accounted for most of the cases (149/161; 93%). Among the 72 NET patients with CS prior to antidepressant usage, CS was exacerbated in 6 cases (8%), only 3 (4%) of whom chose to discontinue the antidepressant. The remaining 89 patients had no prior CS symptoms, and none developed CS following antidepressant usage. Overall, no instances of carcinoid crisis or death were reported. CONCLUSIONS We found no evidence for serious adverse outcomes related to SA usage in NET patients.
