However, inappropriate processing and lack of attention to natural materials such as nuts and wood leads to their poor usage. In addition, volatile compounds make a major contribution to the nut aroma, which is an important indicator of their sensory quality. However, no one has applied roasting technology to Torreya yunnanensis nuts or studied the volatile compounds of the roasted nuts. This study revealed the changes in the composition and content of volatile compounds in Torreya yunnanensis nuts before and after roasting, and the influence of different process points, suggesting that they are key contributors to the development of the related products.

Electron beam from a linear accelerator is commonly used in total skin electron therapy (TSET) at extended distances. Since Das et al (Med Phys 21, p.1733, 1994) reported 5% bremsstrahlung dose for a 6 MeV electron beam at extended distance of 500cm it has been accepted as common knowledge. However, measurements by Chen et al (Int J. Rad Onc Biol Phys 59 p.872, 2004) and Monte Carlo simulations by Ding et al (Phys. Med. Biol. 66, 075010, 2021) were unable to reproduce such high bremsstrahlung dose. As bremsstrahlung dose contributes to whole-body dose, which could produce bone marrow toxicity with serious complications for the outcome of the TSET, it is important to re-evaluate the magnitude of bremsstrahlung dose accurately.

The EGSnrc Monte Carlo system is used to investigate bremsstrahlung doses from 6 MeV high dose rate total skin electron (HDTSe) beams from Varian TrueBeam and Clinac Accelerators. The measurements were carried out at a depth of d

and 5cm in Solid Water and Acrylic phantoms at extenstances is incorrect. Previously reported high bremsstrahlung doses might be due to poor signal-to-noise ratio of using a parallel plate chamber for measuring very low dose or particular setup. The aim of the study was to determine if there is a difference between dental therapy students' clinical performance as compared to dental students at the University of Minnesota. An ex post facto research design was used to compare dental therapy students' and dental students' performance on selected clinical procedures. Dental students and dental therapy students from the graduating classes of 2016, 2017, and 2019 at the University of Minnesota comprised the study sample. Fisher's exact test was used to compare pass rates, and Wilcox rank sum test was used to compare performance scores. Dental therapy students' clinical performance on competency examinations and scores on daily clinical procedures showed no statistically significant difference when compared to dental student performance. There was no overall statistical difference in clinical performance between the three student cohorts. Dental therapy students performed equally as well as the dental students.Hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (HPH) is characterized by elevated pulmonary artery resistance and vascular remodeling. Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) is reported to be involved in HPH, but the underlying mechanisms remain uncertain. We found that Xbp1s, a potent transcription factor during ERS, was elevated in hypoxic-cultured rat PASMCs and lung tissues from HPH rats. Our in vitro experiments demonstrated that overexpressing Xbp1s can promote proliferation, cell viability, and migration and inhibit the apoptosis of PASMCs, while silencing Xbp1s led to the opposite. Through data-independent acquisition (DIA) mass spectrometry, we identified extensive proteomic alterations regulated by hypoxia and Xbp1s. Further validation revealed that p-JNK, rather than p-ERK or p-p38, was the downstream effector of Xbp1s. p-JNK inhibition reversed the biological effects of Xbp1s overexpression in vitro. In the animal HPH model, rats were randomly assigned to five groups normoxia, hypoxia, hypoxia+AAV-CTL (control), hypoxia+AAV-Xbp1s (prevention), and hypoxia+AAV-Xbp1s (therapy). Adeno-associated virus (AAV) serotype 1-mediated Xbp1s knockdown in the prevention and therapy groups significantly reduced right ventricular systolic pressure, total pulmonary resistance, right ventricular hypertrophy, and the medial wall thickness of muscularized distal pulmonary arterioles; AAV-Xbp1s also decreased proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression and increased apoptosis in pulmonary arterioles. Collectively, our findings demonstrated that the Xbp1s-p-JNK pathway is important in hypoxic vascular remodeling and that targeting this pathway could be an effective strategy to prevent and alleviate HPH development.

School health education, including sexual health education, plays a crucial role in shaping adolescents' protective health behaviors, experiences, and outcomes. Adolescents need functional knowledge and skills to practice, adopt, and maintain healthy behaviors for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and unintended pregnancy.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Division of Adolescent and School Health (CDC/DASH) has advanced school-based approaches to STI/HIV and pregnancy prevention through surveillance, research and evaluation, and program partnership and collaboration for over 3 decades.

CDC/DASH uses systematic and innovative strategies to identify the breadth of adolescent sexual health evidence; characterize key elements of effective educational curricula; and provide practical guidance to support school-based delivery. CDC/DASH's approach to effective health and sexual health education in schools has changed dramatically over the past 30 years and must continue to progress.

Studies have shown a circadian regulation of many aspects of immunity. Immune cells have intrinsic clock mechanisms, and innate and adaptive immune responses - such as leukocyte migration, magnitude of inflammation, cytokine production and cell differentiation - are under circadian control. This circadian regulation has consequences for infections including parasitic infections. In the context of Leishmania infection, the circadian clock within host immune cells modulates the magnitude of the infection and the inflammatory response triggered by the parasite. As for malaria, rhythms within the immune system were shown to impact the developmental cycles of Plasmodium parasites within red blood cells. Further, host circadian rhythms impact infections by multicellular parasites; for example, infection with helminth Trichuris muris shows different kinetics of worm expulsion depending on time of day of infection, a variation that depends on the dendritic cell clock. Although the research on the circadian control of immunity in the context of parasitic infections is in its infancy, the research reviewed here suggests a crucial involvement of host circadian rhythms in immunity on the development and progression of parasitic infections.Cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) is a well-known natural anthocyanin with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, we explored the role and action mechanism of C3G in high glucose (HG)-induced damage of human nucleus pulposus cells (HNPCs). Cell viability was assessed by CCK-8 assay. TUNEL assay was performed for detecting apoptotic rate. Western blot was performed to determine the expression levels of cl-caspase-3, caspase-3, Bax, Bim, collagen II, aggrecan, MMP-3, MMP-13, and ADAMTS5. see more Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was analyzed using DCFH-DA staining. The Nrf2 was knocked down or overexpressed in HNPCs through transfection with si-Nrf2 or pcDNA3.0-Nrf2. C3G treatment (12.5, 25, and 50 μM) improved cell viability of HNPCs under HG condition. HG-induced cell apoptosis of HNPCs was attenuated by C3G with decreased apoptotic rate and relative levels of cl-caspase-3/caspase-3, Bax, and Bim. C3G treatment caused significant increase in expression levels of collagen II and aggrecan and decrease in the relative levels of MMP-3, MMP-13, and ADAMTS5. After treatment with C3G, ROS generation in HNPCs was markedly reduced. Treatment with N-acetylcysteine (NAC) reversed HG-induced cell apoptosis and extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation. C3G treatment induced the expression of Nrf2 and HO-1 in HG-induced HNPCs. Moreover, knockdown of Nrf2 reversed the inhibitory effect of C3G on ROS production. Summarily, C3G exerted a protective effect on ROS-mediated cellular damage in HNPCs under HG condition, which was attributed to the induction of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. The larvacean Oikopleura dioica is a cosmopolitan planktonic chordate and is closely related to vertebrates. It is characterized by a tadpole-shaped morphology with notochord flanked by muscle in the tail and brain on the dorsal side, a short life cycle of five days, a compact genome of approximately 56 Mb, a simple and transparent body with a small number of cells (~4000 in functional juveniles), invariant embryonic cell lineages, and fast development that ensures complete morphogenesis and organ formation 10 h after fertilization. With these features, this marine chordate is a promising and advantageous animal model in which genetic manipulation is feasible. In this review, we introduce relevant resources and modern techniques that have been developed (1) Genome and transcriptomes. Oikopleura dioica has the smallest genome among non-parasitic metazoans. Its genome databases have been generated using three geographically distant O. dioica populations, and several intra-species sequence differences are becoming evident; (2) Functional genetic knockdown techniques. Comprehensive screening of genes is feasible using ovarian microinjection and double-strand DNA-induced gene knockdown; and (3) Live imaging of embryos and larvae. Application of these techniques has uncovered novel aspects of development, including meiotic cell arrest, left-right patterning, epidermal cell patterning, and mouth formation involving the connection of ectoderm and endoderm sheets. Oikopleura dioca has become very useful for developmental and evolutionary studies in chordates.Mucositis is a major clinical complication associated with cancer treatment and may limit the benefit of chemotherapy. Leukocytes and inflammatory mediators have been extensively associated with mucositis severity. However, the role of eosinophils in the pathophysiology of chemotherapy-induced mucositis remains to be elucidated. Here, using GATA-1-deficient mice, we investigated the role of eosinophils in intestinal mucositis. There was marked accumulation of eosinophils in mice given irinotecan and eosinophil ablation inhibited intestinal mucositis. Treatment with Evasin-4, a chemokine receptor antagonist, reduced the recruitment of eosinophils and decreased irinotecan-induced mucositis. Importantly, Evasin-4 did not interfere negatively with the antitumour effects of irinotecan. Evasin-4 was of benefit for mice given high doses of irinotecan once Evasin-4-treated mice presented delayed mortality. Altogether, our findings suggest that Evasin-4 may have significant mucosal-protective effects in the context of antineoplastic chemotherapy and may, therefore, be useful in combination with anticancer treatment in cancer patients.
