Insufficient scientific evidence about electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has led to conflicting recommendations (CRs) by credible scientific organizations, creating a public health debate that could prove especially difficult to reconcile as current and former smokers make decisions about whether to use e-cigarettes. To investigate how CRs about e-cigarettes may affect intentions to engage in healthy behaviors, 717 former and current smokers were randomly exposed to one of five conditions (varying in the level of conflict in recommendations) in this between-subject experiment. Our results indicated a significant interaction between the message level of conflict and individuals' information avoidance, employed to maintain hope and deniability. These results suggest the effects of CRs stemming from scientific uncertainty vary with subgroups of people, pointing to several pressing theoretical and practical implications.According to the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE), infiltration accounts for 6 % of the energy use and $11 billion in energy cost for U. S. commercial buildings. One strategy to reduce infiltration in commercial buildings is to provide more supply airflow than return and exhaust in order to "pressurize the building". DOE has developed EnergyPlus models of several prototype buildings which assume that pressurization results in system-on infiltration rates that are 75 % less than the system-off rates. However, airflow simulations of these buildings using the CONTAM multizone airflow software showed that pressurization reduced infiltration by an average of 44 % only. To improve the infiltration rates calculated by the EnergyPlus models of prototype buildings, CONTAM infiltration rates were used to develop coefficients that can be input into EnergyPlus. CONTAM captures the effects of wind, temperature difference, and system operation on infiltration rates. Coefficients were developed for 11 prototype buildings, eight cities, and two levels of building envelope airtightness. Comparisons of the predicted infiltration rates were made between using the DOE prototype model inputs and the NIST infiltration correlations. Using the NIST correlations resulted in an average HVAC-EUI (HVAC-related energy use intensity) savings of 6 % or 1.4 kBtu/ft2 due to airtightening. These results indicate that the effects of infiltration on HVAC energy use are important and that infiltration can and should be better accounted for in whole-building energy modeling.During the COVID-19 pandemic, wearing protective facemasks (PFMs) can effectively reduce infection risk, but the use of PFMs can amplify heat-related health risks. We studied the amplified PFM-induced human thermal stress via both field measurements and model simulations over a typical subtropical mountainous city, Hong Kong. First, a hot and humid PFM microenvironment has been observed with high temperature (34-35 °C) and high humidity (80-95%), resulting in an aggravated facial thermal stress with a maximal PFM-covered facial heat flux of 500 W/m2 under high-intensity activities. Second, to predict the overall PFM-inclusive human thermal stress, we developed a new facial thermal load model, S PFM and a new human-environment adaptive thermal stress (HEATS) model by coupling S PFM with an enhanced thermal comfort model to resolve modified human-environment interactions with the intervention of PFM under realistic climatic and topographical conditions. The model was then applied to predict spatiotemporal variations of PFM-inclusive physiological subjective temperature (PST) and corresponding heat stress levels during a typical heat wave event. It was found wearing PFM can significantly aggravate human thermal stress over Hong Kong with a spatially averaged PST increment of 5.0 °C and an additional spatial area of 158.4% exposed to the severest heat risks. Besides, PFM-inclusive PST was found to increase nonlinearly with terrain slopes at a rate of 1.3-3.9 °C/10°(slope), owing to elevated metabolic heat production. Furthermore, urban residents were found to have higher PFM-aggravated heat risks than rural residents, especially at night due to synergistic urban heat and moisture island effects.

Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) is a variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome and is characterised by a clinical triad of ophthalmoplegia, ataxia and areflexia.

This report presents an atypical case of MFS characterized by ocular and gastrointestinal involvement, and anti-ganglioside antibody-positivity.

A 17-year old boy was referred to our ophthalmology emergency room with signs and symptoms of diplopia and upper lid ptosis of the right eye. He underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination with special reference to strabologic status, as well as a neuropediatric examination with serum antiganglioside antibody panel.

Strabologic examination showed horisontal diplopia (near and far), ptosis of the upper eyelid on the right and bilateral ophthalmoplegia (limited elevation). Orthoptic examination revealed esotropia of 8 prism dioptres (PD) at near and 18 PD at far distance. A pediatric neurologist found normal limb power, deep tendon reflexes and flexor plantar responses, but attenuated right patellar reflex. Serum anti-GQ1b IgG (+++), anti-GQ1b IgM (++) and anti-GD1a IgM(++) were positive. Positivity of anti-GQ1b IgG antibody confirmed the existence of incomplete MFS. We treated the patient with systemic intravenous immunoglobulins for five days, and after five months of follow-up, all symptoms resolved.

MFS can present itself as a wide range of clinical features and its timely recognition is important. Despite the alarming nature of the disease, patients with MFS tend to have a good recovery of presented symptoms, and without any significant residual deficit.

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a disease characterized by inflammation of the paranasal sinus mucosa for a duration of more than 12 weeks. click here It is one of the most frequently diagnosed chronic diseases that is encountered in everyday practice with an overall prevalence ranges from 7% to 27.

To evaluate our long-term experience using wedge-shape middle meatal Merocel packing after functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).

charts and electronic records of consecutive adult CRS patients who failed to respond to medical treatment and underwent endoscopic sinus surgery using wedge-shaped middle meatal Merocele packing were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic data, presence and absence of nasal polyps and/or asthma, postoperative bleeding, middle meatal adhesions and/or lateralization, and requirement of adhesiolysis were reviewed.

697 patients (1394 nasal sides) were included. The mean age was 34 years. CRS with nasal polyps was observed in 224 patients (32%) and 185 (27% pack is an effective middle meatal pack after FESS. It is easy to shape, widely available, and economical. It can decrease early postoperative bleeding and also it provides support to the middle turbinate preventing lateralization and adhesions.

Ectopic Health Sciences students often experience higher level of stress due to clinical knowledge, and it has been reported that they frequently develop worries and symptoms of illness. These observations had lead to the hypothesis that studying health sciences may increase the risk for developing health anxiety.

To investigate the correlation between studying health sciences and health anxiety risk in students of a Greek university.

A cross-sectional study was conducted among health science and non-health science students from the University of Thessaly, Greece. The 14 item - Short Health Anxiety Inventory (SHAI) was used to measure students' health anxiety. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to test the hypothesis.

The population sample consisted of 562 health science students and 204 agriculture and computer science students. The prevalence of health anxiety (SHAI score >14) was 18.1% (95% CI 15.4%-21.1%) while 8.3% (95% CI 6.4%-10.5%) of the participants suffered from clinical health anxiety (SHAI score >18). Health science students had higher SHAI scores compared to non-health science students. Multivariable analysis revealed an increased risk for health anxiety in health science students (OR 2.01, 95% CI 1.02-3.97, p=0.044). Health anxiety was also associated with sex (female) (p<0,008) and the presence of health anxiety in a family member (p<0,001).

The current study identified studying health sciences as a determinant of health anxiety in students of a Greek university, after considering several confounding factors. This relatively neglected hypothesis should be further examined, preferably in a prospective cohort design.

The aim of this study was to compare exercise, continuous short-wave diathermy (SWD) and intermittent SWD treatment modalities and to evaluate the effects of these treatments on chronic back pain and depression.

This study is an intervention trial which evaluated patients who applied to our clinic due to chronic low back pain between 2008-2009. The study group consisted of 90 patients between the ages of 40-65 who had had low back pain for more than 6 months. The patients were randomized into three groups. The first group received placebo short-wave diathermy, the second group received continuous short-wave diathermy, and the third group received pulsed short-wave diathermy. Pain was evaluated by Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the Pain Disability Index (PDI).The Modified Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire Form was used for the measurement of functional deficiency and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used for the evaluation of depression. All scales were performed before the treatment, imse was found to be more effective in reducing pain in patients with chronic low back pain than other treatment modalities used in our study. Although there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of depressive mood, it was found that those receiving continuous and pulsed SWD treatment had significant improvements in depression as measured by the BDI.

Arteriovenous malformation (bAVM) presents maldevelopment of the brain's vessels with a direct connection between cerebral arteries and veins. By current data, patients from Spetzler Ponce A (SP) are found to benefit from the treatment. Considering the outcome, most of SP C and some of the SP B are the most debatable.
