Getting a Kia Sportage Key Replacement

Kia's security features are amazing and make it hard for thieves to gain access to your vehicle. Getting a new key from a dealer is costly.

Thankfully, locksmiths are less costly and can even make new keys on-site. You can even get an account key made, that doesn't require programming.

Keyless Entry System

The key fob comes with an internal chip that allows it to communicate with the receiver module of your vehicle. If the key fob stops working suddenly, it's possible that the internal chip is damaged. This could happen when you drop the key fob to the floor, or if you've attempted to use another key fob but it doesn't work. In this instance you can still begin the vehicle by pressing "Start" button on the key fob, if the battery isn't dead.

If the key fob works, it will send an indication to the receiver module, telling it which trunk or door is open. The module will then open the correct door or trunk so that you can start and get inside the car. The car can also be locked or unlocked by pressing the button on the remote control. Certain systems are smart enough to recognize the driver's unique fob, and will then automatically lock once they leave the vehicle.

The majority of Kia models include a keyless entry system built in, which includes a transponder-key or remote key fob. Some of them require programming by a certified locksmith or dealer, whereas others don't. Batteries charge all key fobs and keys. They must be replaced every two years. You'll need a CR-2032 batteries which can be purchased on the internet for around $5.

Key Fob

The key fob that is used in Kia vehicles is a standard, cylindrical silver device with one button located in the upper left corner. Transponder Chip Key

The transponder key is an auto security device that transmits a unique code when it's put in the ignition. The immobilizer blocks the starter motor, fuel pump motor, and all other devices that allow the car to run without the identification code of the transponder chip.

The key is made of metal with a plastic cap which houses the transponder. To remove the ignition key, you will need to use the screwdriver to achieve enough leverage. Once the key is removed, the user is able see and remove the chip. it appears to be a small black square or a transparent tube. The chip is then positioned on a piece of tape, and is attached to the ignition lock near the ignition barrel.





Locksmiths can make new remotes, keys, or proximity chips for a Kia Sportage at a fraction the cost of what you'd pay at a dealer. They can also program a replacement chip key into your vehicle, as being able to reprogramme the immobilizer of the car so it recognizes the new key. A locksmith can accomplish this by connecting an instrument to the OBD-II connector in your car and using it to communicate to the appropriate modules so that the code that tells the system that the new key is valid is changed.

Remote Key

There are many options to consider when buying a car. Some are practical, such as leather seats and GPS navigation. Others are purely a matter convenience, like remote keyless entry.

With remote keys, you don't need to fight to access your car. It's as easy as pressing an button to lock or unlock it. The keys look like regular metal keys however, they are much more. G28 contain transponders that allow you to start your vehicle without the need to insert the traditional metal key into the ignition.

The majority of these key fobs are battery-operated and the batteries require replacement every two years or so or when you notice that they're not functioning as well as they usually perform. The good news is that you can replace the battery in your key fob yourself at a fraction of cost that you would pay to hire a locksmith or dealer to perform the task. The type of battery you require is a CR-2032, and you can find them at most hardware stores, or big-box retailers.

Only an automotive locksmith or dealer has the specific programming machine needed to program some key fobs. Certain keys don't have transponder chips, and so they don't require programming.
