Furthermore, the stimulation of the auditory nerve by the micro-machined cochlea was investigated using the present mathematical model, and the simulation results were compared with our previous experimental results from animal testing [Shintaku et al, J. Biomech. Sci. Eng. 8 (2013) 198-208]. The simulation results were found to be in reasonably good agreement with those from the previous animal test; namely, there exists a threshold at which the excitation of the nerve starts and a saturation value for the firing rate under a large input. The proposed numerical model was able to qualitatively reproduce the results of the animal test with the micro-machined cochlea and is thus expected to guide the evaluation of micro-machined cochleae for future animal experiments.Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) is a major type of breast cancer. Ocular metastasis (OM) in IDC is rarely seen, but patients with OM often have a poor prognosis. Furthermore, OM is difficult to detect in the early stages by common imaging examinations. In the present study, we tried to figure out the risk factors of OM in IDC and evaluate their diagnostic values for early detection. There were 1192 IDC patients who were divided into two groups according to ocular metastasis involved in this study. Clinical parameters of those patients were used to detect differences. The binary logistic regression test was then used to determine the risk factors of OM in IDC. Furthermore, ROC curves of both single and combined risk factors were established to examine their diagnostic values. The incidence of axillary lymph node metastases was significantly higher in the OM group (p = 0.002). Higher carbohydrate antigen 153 (CA153), lower apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1), and hemoglobin (Hb) were risk factors for OM in IDC (p less then 0.001, p less then 0.001, p = 0.038, respectively). In the single risk factor ROC analysis, cutoff values of CA153, ApoA1, and Hb were 43.3 u/mL (CI 0.966-0.984, p less then 0.001), 1.11 g/L (CI 0.923-0.951, p less then 0.001), and 112 g/L (CI 0.815-0.857, p less then 0.001), respectively. Among the ROC curves of combined risk factors, CA153+ApoA1+Hb had the best accuracy, with the sensitivity and specificity of 89.47% and 99.32%, respectively (CI 0.964-0.983, p less then 0.001). CA153, ApoA1, and Hb are risk factors for OM in IDC. Despite mounting evidence showing that nimodipine (Nim) palys a neuropharmacological and psychopharmacological role in neurons, the attenuating effects of Nim on learning and memory impairment induced by DBP exposure remain unknown. Based on bioinformatics analysis we found that the biological processes affected by both DBP and Nim may involve the calcium signaling pathway, the MAPK signaling pathway and the apoptosis pathway. The results of an in vivo study confirmed that DBP affects the levels of Ca2+ -related proteins, up-regulates phosphorylated -ERK1/2 expression and results in hippocampal neuronal damage and apoptosis, whereas Nim as a Ca2+ antagonist, has a certain neuroprotective role to avoid these adverse effects. The identification of the correlation between Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and different processes involved in carcinogenesis was one of the single points of blinding light highlighting the interconnection between the immune system and cancer. TLRs are a wide family of single-pass membrane-spanning receptors that have developed through the evolution to recognize the structurally conserved molecules derived from microorganisms or damaged cells. But this is not everything about these receptors as they could orchestrate several downstream signalling pathways leading to the formation or suppression of cancer cells. The present review is tempted to provide a concise schematic about the biology and the characters of TLRs and also summarize the major findings of the regulatory role of TLRs and their associated signalling in the pathogenesis of human cancers.Two cases of cutaneous myiasis diagnosed in 2018 in Emilia-Romagna region (northern Italy) were reported. The first one, described in a domestic cat Felis silvestris catus L. (Carnivora Felidae) and caused by Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera Calliphoridae), was the first one of this type ever reported in Italy in cats. The second one was described in a domestic dog Canis lupus familiaris L. (Carnivora Canidae) and caused by Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera Calliphoridae) and was unusual because it occurred in absence of lesions. An extensive literature search on cutaneous myiasis in these two domestic animal species was performed in order to draw attention to predisposing conditions and risk factors.Bacterial placentitis in horses commonly results in abortion, premature birth or compromised neonatal foal health. Although mycobacterial infections are generally uncommon in horses, 10 equine abortion cases caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis (MAH) infections occurred between 2018 and 2019 in Japan. They occurred on seven Thoroughbred horse farms in the Hidaka district of Hokkaido, but direct contact among the mares on different farms was not recorded. Most cases were characterized by extensive pathological lesions of the placenta, which are not typical in cases of common pathogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus zooepidemicus and Escherichia coli. All abortions featured white-yellow exudates on the surface of the placenta. Mycobacterial granuloma formations were histologically found in the placenta and fetal organs, and acid-fast bacteria were isolated from the placenta, fetal samples (heart, lung, liver, kidney, spleen and stomach contents) or uterine lavage fluid. The greatest number of bacteria was isolated from necrotic lesions on the placenta, which could be an important site for bacterial isolation in mycobacterial equine abortions. The isolates were identified as MAH based on internal genome sequences. In variable number tandem repeat analysis, all patterns of the strains were identical. Single nucleotide polymorphism analysis of the core genome grouped all strains in the II-a/SC3 subcluster. Although four atoxigenic A. flavus isolates (C6E, E63I, R7H and R7K) recovered from maize produced in Kenya are registered as active ingredients for a biocontrol product (Aflasafe KE01) directed at preventing contamination, natural distributions of these four genotypes prior to initiation of commercial use have not been reported. Distributions of the active ingredients of KE01 based on haplotypes at 17 SSR loci are reported. Incidences of the active ingredients and closely related haplotypes were determined in soil collected from 629 maize fields in consecutive long and short rains seasons of 2012. The four KE01 haplotypes were among the top ten most frequent. Haplotype H-1467 of active ingredient R7K was the most frequent and widespread haplotype in both seasons and was detected in the most soils (3.8%). The four KE01 haplotypes each belonged to large clonal groups containing 27-46 unique haplotypes distributed across multiple areas and in 21% of soils. It is reported that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important roles during the tumorigenesis of OC. Therefore, the present study aimed to study the role and clinical significance of LncRNAs ATB (lnc-ATB) in the development and progression of OC. In our research, lnc-ATB expression in OC tissues was elevated compared with adjacent normal tissues and high expression of lnc-ATB was associated with poor outcomes of OC patients. The silencing of lnc-ATB blocked cell proliferation, invasion and migration in SKOV3 and A2780 cells. RNA immunoprecipitation and RNA pull-down results showed that lnc-ATB positively regulated the expression of EZH2 via directly interacting with EZH2. Besides, the overexpression of EZH2 partly rescued lnc-ATB silencing-inducing inhibition of cell proliferation, invasion and migration. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assay results demonstrated that the silencing of lnc-ATB reduced the occupancy of caudal-related homeobox protein 1, Forkhead box C1, Large tumour suppressor kinase 2, cadherin-1 and disabled homolog 2 interacting protein promoters on EZH2 and H3K27me3. These data revealed the oncogenic of lnc-ATB and provided a novel biomarker for OC diagnosis. Furthermore, these findings indicated the mechanism of lnc-ATB functioning in the progression of OC, which provided a new target for OC therapy.
