To evaluate the association of the moment of administration of intratympanic dexamethasone with the auditory results in patients with sudden idiopathic hearing loss.

An observational, longitudinal, analytical, retrospective study on patients treated for sudden idiopathic hearing loss with dexamethasone sodium phosphate as initial management. Auditory threshold, auditory gain (dB) and percentage of patients who improved from those who started treatment in the first week (group 1S) versus those started management from the second week (group 2S) are compared. A p < 0.05 was considered significant.

101 cases (37 males and 64 female) were included. Before disease, patients had similar auditory function, after treatment patients in group 1S had significantly better phonetic discrimination than those in group 2S (33.9 ± 18.3 vs. 43.6 ± 26.1 dB; p = 0.036) hearing gain in group 1S was 32.0±11.9 dB and in group 2S was 18.2 ± 9.5 dB (p < 0.001). 93.5% of those who started treatment the first week had auditory improvement while only 61.8% in second week (p < 0.001).

Intratympanic dexamethasone sodium phosphate administered in the first week was more effective in inducing better phonetic discrimination in most cases and is safe than in the second week.

Acute calculous cholecystitis (AC) is one of the most frequent surgical emergencies in our field. TVB-2640 cost Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is considered the treatment of choice, although not sufficiently widespread.

To analyze the application of the Tokyo Guidelines in the management of AC and to determine the influence of the degree of severity on management and prognosis.

Prospective, observational study of patients with a primary diagnosis of AC between 2010 and 2015.. Exclusion criteria AC recurrence; AC as a secondary diagnosis; acalculous cholecystitis; concurrent biliary pathology. Severity was classified according Tokyo 2013 Guidelines.

998 patients were included 338 (33.9%) mild AC, 567 (56.8%) moderate AC, and 93 (9.3%) severe AC. A total of 582 (58.3%) patients were operated on. Postoperative complications Dindo-Clavien grade ≥ II 12.6% mild AC 3.6%; moderate AC 12.2%; severe AC 49.0% (p < 0.001). Overall mortality 2% mild AC 0%; moderate AC 0.5%; severe AC 18.0% (p < 0.001).

Urgent laparoscopic cholecystectomy remains the treatment of choice for mild and moderate AC. In patients with severe AC, the risks and benefits of surgery should be assessed, given the high degree of complications and associated mortality.

To analyze a medical prescription from the 18th century in the New Kingdom of Granada, nowadays Colombia, used in the treatment of soft tissue injuries, specifically wounds and skin ulcers.

A documentary search was conducted in the Cipriano Rodríguez Santamaria Historical Archive of the Octavio Arizmendi Posada Library, at Universidad de La Sabana (Chía, Colombia), and a review of the literature available in electronic databases.

The colonial medical prescription mentions the benefits of lead acetate in poultice for inflammatory processes in general and skin alterations. However, its use is not recommended due to its potential cytotoxic effect at tissue level in various organs.

The reconstruction of the proximal humerus is possible from the resection of the tumor and the placement of a prosthesis. In some cases, they do not meet the anthropometric aspects of the patients.

To determine the parameters to size the components of a humeral prosthesis and the development of a set, using design software.

Forty patients were selected for prostheses, radiographs and CT scans were analyzed and statistical tests were applied to the measurements.

The length of the tumors was 8-20 cm. The minimum length of the humerus was 28 cm and 33 cm the maximum. Correlation was observed between the humerus and the tumor and the height of the patient with p = 0.93088 and p = 0.904564, respectively; humerus diameter, p = 0.2345. The set will include three components, diameter 6-10 mm, and length of 24, 26 and 28 cm. Three modular spacers with lengths of 6, 8.5 and 13 cm. Crowns 6.5 and 8.5 cm long, 1.3 cm in diameter and 5 mm nut.

With the development of the set, poorly calculated resections and adaptation to any humerus size can be resolved.

The association between childhood cancer and socioeconomic status has been widely studied. However, none of the results are conclusive. This study aimed to analyze the association between the Human Development Index (HDI) and the acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) incidence in children under the Popular Medical Insurance Care.

We conducted an observational, descriptive, and population-based study covering 55% of the Mexican population (58 million).

The most impoverished states were located in the south east region of Mexico, while the north was more homogeneous, with HDIs varying between 0.73 and 0.79. Our findings emphasize that the metropolitan area of Mexico City and the State of Nuevo Leon have the highest levels of HDI. Regions were graded from I to IV according to their HDIs in ascending order. The HDIs varied from 0.667 to 0.830/100,000 children/year, with a national average of 0.746. The leukemia incidence for regions I, II, III, and IV was 6.12, 6.53, 4.96, and 9.95. An analysis of ALL incidence in Mexico showed significant differences for region IV in comparison with the other regions based on the HDI values (p = 0.0001).

Further in-depth studies, including the economic aspects of the different geographic regions and their ethnographic characteristics, would give a more comprehensive panorama.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak have major implications in conventional surgical practice. As the number of patients with this diagnosis is rising, the infection risk for the surgical staff will be higher. Few publications have addressed the surgical management of patients diagnosed with COVID-19.

To assess recommendations for care of patients and surgical team during the COVID-19 pandemic.

MEDLINE, Embase and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (April 2020) were searched the key words "COVID-19", "PROTOCOL" and "SURGERY". Relevant recommendations, guidelines and cases series were checked for the most accurate information for apply to our center.

We found 379 papers that included the key words. A total of 25 papers were included in the manuscript based in the pertinence of the recommendations. Three major topics were selected perioperative, intraoperative and postoperative.

As an attempt to regulate the surgical team approach, we present recommendations to preserve patients and surgical staff safety with high quality standards of care through reproducible strategies applicable in most hospital centers.

The risk of occult prostate carcinoma (PCa) after negative multiparametric MRI (mpMRI)-transrectal fusion biopsy (F-Bx) is unknown. To determine the false-negative predictive value, we examined PCa detection after prior negative F-Bx.

Between December 2012 and November 2016, 491 patients with suspected PCa and suspicious mpMRI findings underwent transrectal F-Bx. Patients with benign pathology (n = 191) were eligible for our follow-up (FU) survey. Patient characteristics and clinical parameters were correlated to subsequent findings of newly detected PCa.

Complete FU with a median of 31 (interquartile range 17-39) months was available for 176/191 (92.2%) patients. Of those, 54 men had either surgical interventions on the prostate or re-Bxs. Newly detected PCa was evident in 14/176 (7.95%) patients stratified to ISUP ≤2 in 10 and ≥3 in 4 cases. The comparison of patients with newly detected PCa to those without cancerous findings in FU showed significant differences in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) denata represent a real-world scenario.

Young children are able to explore new objects and practice language through the acquisition of motor skills that lead to their overall development. Congenital hearing loss and total vestibular loss may contribute to the delay in speech and motor skill development.

To investigate the relationship between motor development performance, speech perception, and language performance in children with auditory brainstem implant (ABI).

Ten children, aged 4-17 years (mean age 9.76 ± 4.03), fitted with unilateral ABI for at least 2 years due to the presence of labyrinthine aplasia and rudimentary otocyst at least 1 side were included in the study. Several standardized tests, such as Bruininks-Oseretsky Motor Proficiency Test-2 (BOT-2), Children's Auditory Perception Test Battery, Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (MAIS), and Test of Early Language Development-3, were performed to evaluate their skills of fine motor control, balance, manual dexterity, language, and auditory perception.

A significant correlaticantly poor manual and balance performances are associated with poor speech perception and language skills in children with ABI. The authors recommend performing a vestibular assessment before and after ABI surgery and the use of a holistic rehabilitation approach, including auditory and vestibular rehabilitation, to support development of the children with ABI.Accurate measures of animal population densities are essential to evaluate conservation status and implement action plans to ensure species survival. Gorilla numbers were assessed using the recce survey method within Moukalaba-Doudou National Park (MDNP) in Gabon using fresh nest counts of up to 1 week old. We walked 3,592 km within a 23.01-km2 study site totalling a sampling effort of 297 days. Encounter rate was 0.12 fresh nests per kilometre, and gorilla density estimates generated by home range sizes (by minimal convex polygon) ranged between 1.14 and 1.48 gorillas/km2. Gorillas preferred mixed forest for nesting over other habitats (Cheason index value 1.31). Results showed that gorilla density values within the study area concurred with previous studies that used line transect methodologies. We conclude that the choice of sampling design is dependent on environmental conditions characterised by each habitat type and target species.
