The understandings of environmental activities and regional inventory of ship stack PAHs are very limited in Shanghai due, in part, to the lack of source-segregated analysis. To address this, measured PAHs in organic film on ship surfaces were employed to reconstruct concentrations in various compartments through a fugacity model to investigate the level, transport, fate and annual emission of ship stack PAHs in Shanghai. The results revealed that ship stack PAHs results in 11.2-181 ng L-1 and 71.0-1710 ng g-1 in water and sediment of Shanghai, respectively. After being released into air, ship stack PAHs mainly concentrated in organic films and sediments while sunk in water and sediment. Crucial mass transfer pathways include deposition of airborne and sediment PAHs. The mass loss of ship stack PAHs was primarily through air advection, followed by degradation in sediment. The ship emissions (53.7 tons annually) accounted for approximate one tenth of the regional total in Shanghai (in 2017). Additionally, shipping was estimated to release 127 tons of PAHs annually into the Shanghai section of Yangtze River. Our results suggest our fugacity-based approach can be used to estimate the regional emissions and inventory of ship stack PAHs in the surrounding environment.Water pollution is an environmental problem in constant raising because of population growing, industrial development, agricultural frontier expansion, and principally because of the lack of wastewater treatment technology to remove organic recalcitrant and toxic pollutants from industrial and domestic wastewater. Recalcitrant compounds are a serious environmental and health problem mainly due to their toxicity and potential hazardous effects on living organisms, including human beings. Conventional wastewater treatments have not been able to remove efficiently pollutants from water; however, electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) are able to solve this environmental concern. One of the most recent EAOPs technology is photoelectrocatalysis (PEC), it consists in applying an external bias potential to a semiconductor film placed over a conductive substrate to avoid the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole (e-/h+) pairs, increasing h+ availability and hydroxyl radicals' formation, responsible for promoting the degradation/mineralization of organic pollutants in aqueous medium. This review summarizes the recent advances in PEC as a promising technology for wastewater treatment. It addresses the fundamentals and kinetic aspects of PEC. An analysis of photoanode materials and of the configuration of photoelectrochemical reactors is also presented, including an analysis of the influence of the main operational parameters on the treatment of contaminated water. Finally, the most recent applications of PEC are reviewed, and the challenges and perspectives of PEC in wastewater treatment are discussed.Colony formation is a key process for the occurrence of Microcystis blooms. In order to inhibit colony formation of Microcystis at high level of iron using humic acid, unicellular Microcystis aeruginosa was cultivated in laboratory treated with varying concentrations of iron and humic acid. Our results showed that the extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) content and average colony size increased from 0.57 pg cells-1 and 4.0 μm to 0.93 pg cells-1 and 26.1 μm, respectively, while iron concentration increased from 0.68 mg L-1 to 6.8 mg L-1, suggesting that high level of iron stimulated EPS secretion and induced unicellular Microcystis to form colonies. Transcriptome analysis showed that two genes described as glycosyltransferases (BH695-2217 and BH695-3696) were significantly up-regulated while EPS content increased with increasing iron concentration indicating that iron may regulate the expression of genes involved in polysaccharide synthesis. When treated with 10 mg C L-1 humic acid at high level of iron, the EPS content and average colony size decreased by 35.5% and 56.3%, respectively, revealing that humic acid inhibited EPS secretion under high level of iron condition, and ultimately inhibited colony formation of Microcystis. Our results suggested that humic acid could be used as an agentia inhibiting large colony formation of Microcystis and thereby reducing the occurrence of Microcystis blooms.
The aim of the report is to summarise the progress made during a six-month pilot project expanding arts therapies provision from an inpatient service to community services, in a National Health Service health board's Older Adult Mental Health Services, in response to the need for direct therapy with older adults who have severe cognitive impairment and communication difficulties arising from dementia and/or complex mental health difficulties.
This is a case report on a pilot project.
The level of need for the service was explored, and indicators of effectiveness were gathered using evaluation forms-observer feedback forms and ARM-5 (Agnew Relationship Measure - 5) - to indicate the therapeutic alliance, team review and feedback from colleagues.
To gather indications about the level of need, we recorded the following number of referrals (n= 125) and waiting list numbers at the end of the project (n= 34).
This pilot project indicates that there is need for psychological interventions in older adult co challenges arising from mental health difficulties and/or dementia.Alcohol use is prevalent among college students, and some are at risk for developing alcohol use disorders. However, many students report using alcohol without experiencing negative consequences, which may be due, in part, to use of protective behavioral strategies (PBS). Although evidence of PBS effectiveness on reducing alcohol use and negative consequences is mixed, gender/sex differences in PBS use remain a consistent finding. To further explore these associations, we used item response theory models and assessed item-level PBS correlations with alcohol outcomes separately for female and males. Results indicated specific items exhibited significant sex differences in the amount of information and location of information across the latent trait. Some items provided little information across females and males, suggesting these items can be removed. All PBS items significantly associated with alcohol outcomes were negative in direction, but effects ranged from small to large in magnitude. These findings suggest strategies that are effective against alcohol-related harms vary across females and males, and PBS measurement may be improved by establishing sex-specific norms and analyzing females and males separately when studying PBS. Future research priorities include examining PBS among intersex, trans, and nonbinary people.The objective of this study was to determine whether a phytogenic blend (PB), formulated based on organic acids, tannins, curcumin, and essential oils, could replace the antimicrobials commonly used as growth promoters in the poultry industry without compromising zootechnical performance, health, or meat quality. In addition, our goal was to report the anti-aflatoxin effect of this phytogenic blend. Four treatments were used TC, or control; T250, T500, and T1000, representing test doses of 250, 500, 1000 mg PB/kg of feed, respectively, or a 34-day experiment (initial and growth phases). On day 22 of the study and age of the birds, 500 ppb of aflatoxin was included in the diet to represent an intestinal challenge and to evaluate the growth-promoting effects of PB. In the initial phase (up to 21 days), there were no differences between groups in weight gain, feed intake, or feed conversion. After adding an aflatoxin-contaminated feed, doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg minimized the adverse effects on feed consumption and feed conversion caused by aflatoxin; but 1000 mg/kg did not differ between groups. In birds that consumed PB (T250, T500, and T1000) compared to the control, there were the following changes 1) lower counts of heterophiles, lymphocytes, and monocytes; 2) lower lipid peroxidation and high non-protein thiols levels in breast meat; 3) lower bacteria counts in broiler litter; and 4) lower ALT levels. Greater intestinal villus/crypt ratios were observed at T250 and T500. The dose of 250 mg/kg reduced saturated fatty acids and increased unsaturated fatty acids. The chemical-physical composition of the meat did not differ between treatments. The findings suggest that the addition of a PB has a high potential to improve performance for chickens in the growing stage and minimize the adverse effects of aflatoxicosis.The antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in human and animal pathogens is a global concern, and antimicrobial use (AMU) is considered the most important driver for its increase. The aim of this study was to assess AMR in Escherichia coli and Enterococcus spp. in faecal samples of pigs subjected to four different AMU protocols from birth to finishing G1, no in-feed antimicrobials; G2 a total average dose 6018 mg antimicrobials/pig; G3 a total average dose 8127 mg antimicrobials/pig; and G4 a total average dose 15,678 mg antimicrobials/pig. Faecal samples were collected at six time points and AMR was assessed in both bacteria. The microbiota composition was assessed by 16S rRNA sequencing. RU.521 Minor differences on the microbiota profile was observed among groups, but a lower FirmicutesBacteroidetes ratio was noted in G4. Escherichia coli and Enterococcus spp. strains isolated from all groups showed a high level of multi-drug resistance (MDR). The amount of antimicrobials used was significantly positively associated with the probability of MDR in both bacteria. Approximately 43% of the variation in MIC90 for colistin could be explained by AMU, and a one-day increase in administration of colistin increased MIC90 by 0.05 μg mL-1. In conclusion, the results suggest that the higher the use of antimicrobials in farms, the higher the MDR frequency and resistance to the highest priority critically important antimicrobials for humans in commensal gut bacteria of pigs.In recent years, there has been increasing evidence of cerebellar involvement in emotion processing. Difficulties in the recognition of emotion from voices (i.e., emotional prosody) have been observed following cerebellar stroke. However, the interplay between sensory and higher-order cognitive dysfunction in these deficits, as well as possible hemispheric specialization for emotional prosody processing, has yet to be elucidated. We investigated the emotional prosody recognition performances of patients with right versus left cerebellar lesions, as well as of matched controls, entering the acoustic features of the stimuli in our statistical model. We also explored the cerebellar lesion-behavior relationship, using voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping. Results revealed impairment of vocal emotion recognition in both patient subgroups, particularly for neutral or negative prosody, with a higher number of misattributions in patients with right-hemispheric stroke. Voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping showed that some emotional misattributions correlated with lesions in the right Lobules VIIb and VIII and right Crus I and II. Furthermore, a significant proportion of the variance in this misattribution was explained by acoustic features such as pitch, loudness, and spectral aspects. These results point to bilateral posterior cerebellar involvement in both the sensory and cognitive processing of emotions.
